Virtual Reality has threatened to upheave the idea of gaming as we know it, even though it’s still very much in its infancy as a technology.

Despite the natural teething problems that will always happen with any new technology, VR games have evolved in leaps and bounds over the past few years and are providing better and better experiences for pioneering virtual reality gamers.

Below we have compiled a list of the top virtual reality games of 2018 based on their popularity, reviews and just general wow factor. Many of the top gaming studios are eyeing out the potential of virtual reality to completely change the gaming landscape and have adapted accordingly by transforming some classic games into enticing VR ready titles.

Skyrim

Skyrim should need no introduction – despite being nearly half a decade old, this open-world RPG classic still enthralls fans worldwide and it’s graphics engine has stood the test of time surprisingly well.

The VR ready version of Skyrim gives gamers a completely new take on the open world classic and is one of the most popular VR reformats to date. Better yet, the VR version also comes with a host of fan-made mods to enhance your overall experience just like the original.

Bethesda have also introduced some significant updates since it’s original release to smooth out a number of issues for a better overall VR experience.

Be prepared to spend endless hours fighting dragons and giants with your virtual headset on. The experience may take some getting used to, but if you want to be at the forefront of modern gaming then this is surely it.

Resident Evil 7

Resident Evil 7 was a hit addition to the classic Resident Evil series, and the VR version is a completely immersive experience that is guaranteed to send shivers down your spine.

As if Resident Evil wasn’t scary enough, given the addition of a VR headset, the potential for thrills and heart racing scares is phenomenal, though this level of intensity may not be for everyone.

If you are an adrenaline junky then this is definitely the game for you, as seeing zombies and all kind of horrific creatures jump right out of the VR headset at you is something that requires some serious mental fortitude.

Be warned though: some users reported motion sickness while others were completely fine. If you have any history of sea sickness or other motion sicknesses, then this may not be the game for you.

Superhot VR

Superhot VR is a VR exclusive title that received a lot of praise for it’s original game mechanics, in which time only moves when you do.

This original style of gameplay makes for a host of Max Payne inspired slow motion debauchery finding the most styling ways to despatch your enemies at all times.

The level design is excellent and the VR controls are top notch thanks to it’s tailor-made VR ready engine.

On the downside, the whole experience is rather short and may not be for everyone looking for a totally immersive experience or a more story drive VR game.

If you are looking for an all-around fun to play VR ready title with a smooth experience, Superhot just might be the game for you.

Elite: Dangerous

If flying around space in your own epic space ride appeals to you, then imagine doing so with a full VR view of the entire cockpit putting you ride in the driver’s seat of a futuristic spacecraft as you explore the universe.

One of the oldest living gaming franchises around, Elite: Dangerous lives up to its history with its VR ready version which was made from the ground up to support VR from the outset.

Fly through space to destroy enemies, trade for resources, or simply explore the vast world available to you in this epic space shooter.

Arizona Sunshine

This VR-only title has been praised as one of the longest and most compelling VR-only experiences to date.

Put yourself in VR zombie apocalypse where you are fighting to survive against hordes of the undead as well as the harsh elements of the Arizona desert.

Being tailor made from the ground up for VR, the shooting mechanics are smooth and satisfying and the title comes with some quirky game dialogue to boot.

If gunning down hordes of zombies with an arsenal of badass weaponry sounds like your kind of fund, Arizona Sunshine is sure not to disappoint.

With so many new VR titles hitting the shelves it can be hard to shortlist the best of the best.

We hope this list inspired you to take your first dive into the futuristic world of VR or to add to your list of VR titles with some classics that are sure to provide some of the best VR experiences the world has to offer. With more an more industries looking to embraces VR (soon users will even be able to play Texas Hold’em in VR for real money) it’s only a matter of time before a VR headset becomes a household item in any modern home.
