The Most Anticipated Games That Are Yet To Be Released In 2017

2017 has been quite the bountiful for the gamer’s community, so much so that some analysts are calling it one of the most significant gaming years ever. From open-world behemoths to nerve-wrecking horrors and long-awaited sequels, 2017 has kept us busy trying to keep track. And let’s not forget the many indie darlings that have defied all expectations and made names for themselves among blockbuster releases.

Now that the year is coming to a close, it’s safe to say that many of the titles that were set to take center stage in 2017 have already done their bidding. Even late-comers like Assassin’s Creed Origins, Super Mario Odyssey, and Call of Duty WWII have been released, and are making their way into gaming rooms all over the world.

That said, we still have several games that are yet to hit the stores, despite having kept fans on edge the entire year. Some are just one or two weeks away, while others don’t have a definite release date. Regardless, these upcoming games can’t come soon enough.

1. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (Microsoft Windows, Xbox One)

Release Date: December 2017

The Most Anticipated Games That Are Yet To Be Released In 2017

Despite receiving only an Early Access release in March, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds landed on Steam with a bang. The groundbreaking online shooter has sold more than twenty million copies and is currently the most played game on Steam. Now, amid the already remarkable success, Battlegrounds is set for a full release in December.

Like a typical MOBA game, you won’t find any story or single-player campaign. Instead, Battlegrounds places you on an island along with 100 other competitors. Your mission? Be the last person standing.

The map is expansive enough for you to find safe and secluded areas, despite there being 99 other players. You won’t be able to hide or explore for long, however, as the play space will gradually be shrinking, forcing you to face your enemies.

Overall, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is right up there with the best games this year, and it’s not exactly out yet. Sure, the phrase “unoptimized” has occasionally been used to describe it, but the upcoming full release will undoubtedly be sufficiently refined.

2. The Sims 4 (PlayStation 4, Xbox One)

Release Date: November 2017

As if breathtaking exclusives like Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4), Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (PS4), and Halo Wars 2 (Xbox One) weren’t enough, console gamers will also get to play The Sims 4 before the end of the year.

Setting up the stage for what sounds to be the best console installment since the social sandbox series began 17 years ago, The PlayStation Blog has been quick to disprove any speculations that this would be another watered-down port.

Additionally, publisher EA has promised console owners “many” of the add-ons that the PC version has gotten since 2014, including Life of the Party and Up All Night. Unfortunately, however, nothing has been said regarding user-mod support.

3. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Nintendo Switch)

Release Date: December 1, 2017

The Most Anticipated Games That Are Yet To Be Released In 2017

Xenoblade is an excellent JRPG franchise that hasn’t garnered the attention it deserves. Although the last two releases became instant fan-favorites for their vast open worlds and creative characters, they hardly penetrated the mainstream.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 could be just what the series needs to achieve widespread recognition. As a sequel to the Nintendo Wii game, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 will feature a dynamic open world of monsters, quests, and secrets. The game will also receive a season pass containing post-launch DLC that includes new story content and exclusive weapons.

If you’re planning to pick up a Switch this coming holiday, you’ll be pleased to have a solid JRPG to sink your teeth into while on the couch and on the go.

4. Age of Empires: Definitive Edition (Microsoft Windows)

Release Date: early 2018

Age of Empires, the beloved Windows RTS game that launched a legacy 20 years ago, was scheduled to return in October, introducing sharper visuals, bug fixes and a slew of new features, as well as Xbox Live support for online multiplayer gaming.

As it turns out, fans of the highly anticipated game will now have to wait until 2018, because of what the team termed as a need for more development time.

Although several AoE sequels have been released, along with an HD remaster of Age of Empires II, the first game in the franchise hasn’t seen a re-release, even on digital platforms like Steam. The release date may have been pushed back a while, but we reckon the game will be well worth the wait.

5. Doom VFR (PlayStation VR, HTC Vive)

Release Date: December 1, 2017

The Most Anticipated Games That Are Yet To Be Released In 2017

This year has been huge for VR gaming. Sure we’re still reeling from the mess that was Mass Effect: Andromeda, but games like Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Star Trek: Bridge Crew and Lone Echo will remain entrenched in our minds for a long time. With the end of year fast approaching, virtual reality is back for one final punch, this time with one of the most-acclaimed horror franchises ever made.

Doom VFR will give players control of a scientist who was killed in the initial demon invasion of Mars, and whose consciousness was transferred to an AI that can exist in any robot on the station. The game will still be mostly about mowing down demons, but you’ll also be tasked with repairing the station.

Although some concerns have been raised concerning the use of teleportation for movement, the game seems incredibly fast and enjoyable. Teleporting will also bring “Telefragging” – the game’s form of Glory Kill, where you’ll be able to teleport into a weakened enemy, blowing them up in the process.

Doom VFR has many different elements, but it seems poised to be a fun new way of experiencing the celebrated franchise. And with Bethesda bringing Fallout 4 and Skyrim to VR as well, it sure looks like the best time to grab that VR-ready gaming machine you’ve been eyeing.

The Most Anticipated Games That Are Yet To Be Released In 2017

Mount & Blade: Warband was an instant crowd favorite when it was released back in 2010, and the sequel (or prequel, as the story goes) is promising to be bigger and better in every possible way. TaleWorlds Entertainment is apparently focusing on creating humongous battles and making the game extensively moddable. Unsurprisingly, modders can hardly wait to get their hands on it.

Black Mesa (Microsoft Windows, Linux)
