Best MSI Laptops under $1000

MSI GL62M 7RE-407 15.6-inchMSI GL62M 7RE-407 15.6-inch

While most of MSI’s gaming laptops sell for over $1000, the MSI GL62M 7RE-407 is an affordable option for those looking for a good gaming laptop at a lower price. While most of its competitors and even the MSI GL62M 7RD-058 feature the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 GPU, the MSI GL62M 7RE-407 ships with the more powerful GTX 1050 Ti. The GTX 1050 Ti offers higher frame rates and smoother performance, which offers a better gaming experiencing overall. Its Intel Core i5-7300HQ processor might offer three quarters of the performance of the popular Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, but it will still allow you to run any modern game on the market at the moment. You will only really notice the difference while pushing your settings, multitasking or while using CPU intensive applications. However, this does allow MSI to bring down the price of the GL62M 7RE-407. Another noticeable feature that is missing from the MSI GL62M 7RE-407 is its lack of a backlit keyboard, this once again brings down the price and is not a deal breaker. While some of the sub $1000 gaming laptops still cling on to the DDR4 2133MHz RAM modules, MSI have gone with the slightly higher frequency 2400MHz RAM which helps to increase the laptop’s overall performance. You can increase the RAM to a maximum of 32GB and we recommend looking at the G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 2x 8GB kit as a good upgrade for the MSI GL62M 7RE-407. When it comes to modern games, the space required to install these titles has shot up dramatically over the last few years. This means that while you do get a superfast M.2 SSD, its 256GB of storage space will fill up extremely quickly with games such as GTA V or Battlefield 1. Luckily there is space to install a SATA-based storage drive. It has to be mentioned that while you can upgrade the MSI GL62M 7RE-407, it is not as easy as some of MSI’s more premium laptops and requires some time and patience to pry off the bottom panel to get to the components.

The MSI GL62M 7RE-407 offers great performance for its sub $1000 price tag, however the small SSD will fill up fairly quickly and you should consider a second SSD or 7200rpm HDD to extend its storage.

MSI GL62M 7RD-265 15.6-inchMSI GL62M 7RD-265 15.6-inch

Joining the MSI GL62 6QF-628 in our guide, the new MSI GL62M 7RD-265 comes packed with more features and far superior hardware for the gamer on a tighter budget. It now features an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 which was released at the end of 2016. This graphics card features 2GB of dedicated GDDR5 video memory and will offer a far superior gaming experience than the older GTX 960M that its predecessor featured. Its base clock speed is over 300MHz higher than the GTX 960M and the newer Pascal architecture makes a huge difference if you intend to embrace the next generation of gaming technology. While many of MSI’s gaming laptops are heavy and bulky, the MSI GL62M 7RD-265 measures in at just a bit over an inch and weighs about the same as an all-purpose 15.6-inch laptop. While you still get a SteelSeries keyboard, unfortunately this one is not backlit and this is a bit of a shame when it comes to a great MSI gaming laptop. Powering the new MSI GL62M 7RD-265 is a Kaby Lake-based Intel Core i5-7300HQ processor and 8GB of DDR4 2400MHz RAM. While you only get 8GB of RAM, the higher frequency RAM offers improved performance compared to the 2133MHz that many of its competitors offer. You can easily increase the RAM to a maximum of 32GB and we recommend looking at the G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 2x 8GB kit as a good upgrade. While the 7200rpm hard drive offers ample storage space, a faster M.2 SSD would take your gaming experience to the next level. Like most MSI gaming laptops you get a great quality Full-HD display that offers vivid colors and good viewing angles. You can use a 4K gaming monitor thanks to the laptop’s HDMI and Mini DisplayPort, but you will need an adaptor as most monitors only feature full size DisplayPorts.

MSI CX62 7QL-058 15.6-inchMSI CX62 7QL-058 15.6-inch

One of the most affordable laptops in MSI’s line-up, the MSI CX62 7QL-058 offers users on a tighter budget an all-purpose laptop that can be used for gaming thanks to its dedicated NVIDIA graphics card and its seventh generation Intel-based processor. Sporting the latest generation Intel i5-7200U processor and 8GB of DDR4 2133MHz RAM, the CX62 7QL-058 will easily cope with basic tasks and will even run more demanding apps like Adobe Photoshop. However to save costs, MSI have once again used a cheap display panel on the CX range of laptops and this means that it is not ideal for design work. Not only does it sport a lower sRGB score than the higher-end MSI laptops, it also only offers a maximum resolution of 1366 x 768. At just under $700, we would have liked to have seen a Full-HD display. Luckily you will be able to connect a Full-HD or UHD/4K display via the Mini DisplayPort or HDMI. For gaming, MSI has added a NVIDIA GeForce 940MX graphics card with 2GB of dedicated GDDR3 video memory, which shows a slight performance increase from the standard 940M card. This is one of NVIDIA’s mid-range graphics cards and will run most AAA games on low to medium graphics in order to retain a frame rate of over 30fps. While last year’s model saw a faster 7200rpm hard drive, the CX62 7QL-058 sadly now comes with a much slower 5400rpm hard drive. We recommend upgrading to a 7200rpm hard drive or even a superfast SSD. Due to its price, MSI has not used their SteelSeries keyboard and instead they have fitted the CX62 7QL-058 with a more cost effective alternative which still ensures that you have a comfortable and responsive typing experience.

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)

Cons

  • Average viewing angles and colors
  • 1366 x 768 display
  • Slower 5400rpm HDD
  • No SteelSeries keyboard
  • Fan noise while gaming

Summary

With its lower price, the CX62 7QL-058 is a winner for the gamer on a tight budget. While some of MSI’s flashy design features are missing, it’s still all MSI under the hood.

MSI GL62 6QF-405 17.3-inchMSI GL62 6QF-405 17.3-inch

MSI is known for their behemoth laptops that pack the most powerful hardware available, but they also cater to the budget conscious gamer who is after the reliability of a MSI gaming rig. MSI has added their signature SteelSeries keyboard to the MSI GL62 6QF-405, which has been specifically designed for gaming, but unlike the higher end models from MSI the GL62’s keyboard is not backlit. The MSI GL62 6QF-405 is packed with a Skylake Quad-core Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor, 8GB of DDR4 RAM and a 1TB 5400rpm hard drive, which will make light work of any day-to-day tasks. MSI has only used one of the RAM slots, which means that upgrading to 16GB of RAM is a quick and easy process. The 7200rpm hard drive is faster than the standard 5400rpm drives and MSI has added an m.2 slot for an SSD module to be installed. An NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M with 2GB of dedicated video memory will allow older games to run on higher graphics, but newer titles will have to run on medium settings to allow for higher frame rates. The 17.3-inch Full-HD display offers great viewing angles, vivid colors and a maximum resolution of 1920×1080. MSI has added their “Shift” technology to the GL62, which allows for the laptop to push the hardware to its limit while minimizing the noise and the temperature. Reviewers have had mixed results when it comes to the effectiveness of the Shift software and have reported higher fan noise levels under load. Additional features include two USB 3.0 ports, USB Type-C, HDMI, VGA, Mini-Display port and a Super Multi DVD burner.

MSI GT72 Dominator G-831 17.3-inchMSI GT72 Dominator G-831 17.3-inch

Designed for gaming, the GT range is MSI’s top of the line range with most of their GT line costing over $2000. But the MSI GT72 Dominator G-831 is an exception to the rule and packs a punch with powerful hardware at a lower price point. It is powered by a Skylake Quad-core Intel i7-6700HQ processor, backed by 16GB of DDR4 RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX970M with 3GB of dedicated video memory, which will deliver superior gameplay performance with the latest generation of games. MSI has decided to include a 128GB SSD and a 1TB 7200RPM hard drive, which combined will give you plenty of speed and storage for all your media needs. The 17.3-inch Full-HD IPS display offers wide viewing angles, rich colors and a maximum resolution of 1920×1080. The SteelSeries full color backlit keyboard has been specifically designed for gaming, making your key strokes fast and responsive for gaming and word processing. MSI has addressed the cooling issue that plagued the earlier Dominator laptops by adding their Shift technology and by redesigning its port ventilation for its cooling system. This allows the laptop to push the hardware to its limit while minimizing the noise and the temperature build up. Additional features include six USB 3.0 ports, USB Type-C, HDMI, a Mini-Display port and a Super Multi DVD burner.

MSI are known for their hardcore gaming laptops. The MSI GE72VR Apache Pro-009 is a new addition to their list of pedigree gaming laptops and is ready for the next generation of games. Its full metal design and aggressive looks are everything that you would expect from a high-end MSI laptop. A high-end 6th generation Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor and 16GB of DDR4 2133 MHz RAM power the MSI GE72VR Apache Pro-009 and allow for effortless multitasking and lag free gaming. To make the MSI GE72VR Apache Pro-009 more future proof, MSI have gone with a next generation graphics card, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060. The GTX 1060 offers notably more processing power than its predecessor and you can expect to play Overwatch on ultra settings with a frame rate over 100 fps. To ensure that the graphics look crisp and clear, the MSI GE72VR Apache Pro-009 features a large 17.3-inch Full-HD IPS display. The display offers bright and vivid colors, and great viewing angles thanks to its In-plane switching technology. To insure that you have ample storage space the MSI GE72VR Apache Pro-009 features both a 256GB solid state drive and a 1TB 7200rpm mechanical hard drive. The M.2 SSD allows the laptop to boot up in seconds and offers lightning fast performance while gaming. But with the size of games such as The Witcher and Battlefield 4, you will have to be selective which games you will install on your SSD. But like all gaming laptops, the battery life is poor meaning the MSI GE72VR Apache Pro-009 is more suited as being a desktop replacement.

MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-034 15.6-inchMSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-034 15.6-inch

MSI Gaming laptops have always been a bit bulky, however the MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-034 proves that powerful hardware can be packed into a thinner laptop. The MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-034 features an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 laptop edition with 6GB of GDDR5 video memory. This will easily allow you to play the latest AAA gaming titles and offers far superior performance compared to the previous generation GTX 960M GPU. The GTX 1060 has also been designed for far better performance with virtual reality setups and will easily handle the Oculus Rift. While some of MSI’s laptops are currently running the Kaby Lake processors, the MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-034 still features the popular Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor from the Skylake generation. While it might be a generation behind, this processor will easily keep up with your gaming needs and will have no issues running video and photo editing applications. It also features 16GB of DDR4 2400MHz RAM and offers a slight increase in performance over the widely used DDR4 2133MHz RAM. To insure that your Windows will boot in seconds, the MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-034 features a 256GB M.2 solid state drive. However, if you have a large collection of games and you want them to benefit from the advantages of an SSD, then you might want to consider upgrading the SSD to one with more storage. Otherwise, there is a much slower 1TB 5400rpm mechanical drive that offers ample storage space. This too can be upgraded to a faster 7200rpm HDD or a SATA based SSD. The SteelSeries full color backlit keyboard has been specifically designed for gaming, making your keystrokes fast and responsive for gaming and word processing. While the laptop measures in at a thin 0.69-inches, the powerful hardware will create quite a bit of heat while gaming or using intensive applications. This will mean that the system will run the cooling fans more often than not and might be a deal breaker for those looking for a quieter laptop.

MSI GS63VR STEALTH PRO-229 15.6-inchMSI GS63VR STEALTH PRO-229 15.6-inch

While many of MSI’s laptops are quite bulky, the Stealth range is thin and light. This makes a refreshing change for the gamer who doesn’t want a heavy and bulky laptop as an everyday carry. The build quality is great and the aggressive design complements its gaming pedigree under its hood. Not only does this MSI laptop look great, it also weighs in at a light 3.96 lbs and is 0.69-inches thick, which is not bad for a gaming laptop. However, one thing on the design that might annoy some users is the placement of the power button, and you should change your power settings to prevent your laptop from going to sleep when you accidently bump the button. Sporting the latest generation Kaby Lake Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor and a healthy 32GB of DDR4 RAM, the MSI GS63VR STEALTH PRO will run any current game with ease. To ensure that your games look amazing in the graphics department, MSI have fitted the GS63VR STEALTH PRO with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card with 6GB of GDDR5 video memory. The GTX 1060 will allow you to run almost every game on ultra settings at 1080p with a frame rate of over 30fps. However there are some games that will push this card to the limit and we recommend setting your settings slightly lower to prevent your frame rate from dropping too low. The Full-HD display offers vibrant colors and the viewing angles are pretty wide thanks to the IPS technology. Storage wise, MSI have fitted the MSI GS63VR STEALTH PRO with both a 1TB mechanical hard drive and superfast M.2 512GB SSD. The SSD will give you the edge you need and will save you precious seconds when loading into games. Another nice touch is the fact that the MSI GS63VR STEALTH PRO comes with Windows 10 Professional instead of Windows 10 Home, unlocking more of the features of Windows 10.

MSI GT62VR Dominator Pro-238 15.6-inchMSI GT62VR Dominator Pro-238 15.6-inch

One of the first new laptops from MSI for 2017 is their MSI GT62VR Dominator Pro-238. This new edition sports a new Kaby Lake processor from Intel and one of NVIDIA’s 10-series graphics card for even better gaming performance over last year’s models. The new Dominator Pro for 2017 now features the new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 and offers far better performance than its predecessor. This will make all the difference when it comes to those AAA gaming titles. The Pascal architecture has been developed for the next generation of VR gaming and will give you the edge over laptops running the older GTX 970M graphics card. A seventh generation Intel Core i7-7700HQ and 16GB of DDR4 RAM will allow you to run the latest AAA gaming titles with no lag and will even run hardware intensive design apps. You can easily upgrade the RAM to a mammoth 32GB or to a higher frequency RAM. The 1TB mechanical hard drive offers ample storage space for older games and multimedia files and the 256GB SSD takes care of those AAA gaming titles that need that extra performance. However, even at double the SSD storage space of some of its competitors, this SSD will fill up extremely quickly as the size of games has increased over the years. Titles such as Battlefield 1, Titanfall 2 and GTA V take up over 40GB each so you might want to consider a larger solid state drive. The superfast M.2 solid state drive can easily be replaced with a Samsung 960 EVO 500GB SSD or if your budget allows, the Samsung 960 Pro 1TB SSD. Like most of the higher-end MSI laptops, you get a Full-HD display. But despite the lack of a 4K display, you still get a display that offers rich colors and great viewing angles. The display also features G-SYNC which matches the display panel’s refresh rate to the frame rate of the graphics card for an impressive gaming experience.

The new Dominator for 2016 now features an NVIDIA’s 10-series graphics card for even more gaming performance. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 offers far better performance than its predecessor which will make all the difference when it comes to those AAA gaming titles. However the 16GB of RAM can easily be upgraded to 24GB or even 32GB for better performance. While the 1TB mechanical hard drive offers ample storage space for older games and multimedia files, the 256GB SSD is slightly small with some modern games requiring at least 40GB or more. Luckily this superfast M.2 solid state drive can easily be replaced with a Samsung 960 EVO 500GB SSD for superior storage space. Much like most of the higher-end MSI laptops, you get a Full-HD display. But despite the lack of a 4K display, you still get a display that offers rich colors and great viewing angles. MSI GE72VR Apache Pro-023 17.3-inchMSI GE72VR Apache Pro-023 17.3-inch

MSI are on the forefront of the gaming scene and they have been releasing some of the most powerful gaming laptops for a number of years now. The new Apache Pro comes with a 10-series NVIDIA graphics card, which offers far better graphics performance than its predecessor. The GeForce GTX 1060 features 6GB of GDDR5 video memory and compared to its predecessor it scores more than double on 3DMark’s Fire Strike Graphics benchmark test. This will mean that you will be able to play AAA gaming titles such as The Division, Overwatch, Battlefield 1 and The Witcher 3 on ultra-settings. The GTX 1060 also offers far better VR support than the previous generation, which will mean that the MSI GE72VR Apache Pro-023 is slightly more future proof than some of its competitors still running the GTX 960. To ensure that you have a lag free gaming experience, MSI have gone with a Skylake-based sixth generation Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor and 12GB of DDR4 2133MHz RAM. While 12GB is an odd number when it comes to gaming laptops, it can easily and cheaply be upgraded to 16GB to increase its performance. To ensure that you can boot into windows in seconds and that you have the advantage while loading games, the MSI GE72VR Apache Pro-023 features a superfast M.2 solid state drive. But with only 256GB of storage space, this drive will fill up fast due to the size of modern games. Luckily MSI have also installed a 1TB 7200rpm mechanical hard drive for all of your storage needs. With a USB 3.1 Type-C port you will be ready for the next generation of gaming peripherals or you can attach an external GPU case if you want to ramp up your graphics with a desktop graphics card.

MSI WT72 6QM-423US 17.3-inchMSI WT72 6QM-423US 17.3-inch

The MSI WT72 6QM-423US is a purposely built workstation that has been designed for processor intensive rendering programs, but this behemoth can also run the latest gaming titles on the highest of settings. Designed off of one of MSI’s gaming chassis, the WT72 has aggressive gaming looks and a brushed metal finish. A powerful Skylake Intel Xeon E3-1505M v5 processor (supports ECC RAM) is backed by 32GB of DDR4 RAM and the graphics are powered by an NVIDIA Quadro M5000M rendering card. Designed primarily for animation and multimedia rendering, the NVIDIA Quadro M5000M will handle almost any modern title with high frame rates. Storage is fast and plentifully with two 128GB SSD’s and a 1TB 7200rpm mechanical hard drive. The 17.3-inch IPS display offers wide viewing angles, a maximum resolution of 1920×1080 and rich colors, but for a workstation it could offer better coverage of professional color spaces. The MSI WT72 6QM-423US does come with a massive price tag, but for a purposely built workstation laptop it is justifiable. The cooling system works well and even under load only peaks to about 50dB, but even when the laptop is idle the cooling system will be audible. The battery life is poor and when under load it will get just over an hour of use. Additional features include; six USB 3.0 ports, one USB Type-C port, HDMI, S/PDIF and a Mini-Display port.

Summary

Being purpose built for rendering, the MSI WT72 6QM-423US is a great solution for those after a mobile workstation, but the huge price tag limits it to a very select clientele.
