Virtual Reality is here to stay and the future is here, but that hasn’t really been the case for Mac owners out there. You see most Mac users have been left out in the cold since Apple laptops don’t have the specs to properly support VR headsets such as the Oculus Rift or the HTC Vive. However, a new Kickstarter campaign product called The Wolfe could change that.
Basically, The Wolfe is a graphics amplifier made for your mac, much like the products currently produced by Alienware, ASUS and Razer. This amplifier houses desktop grade graphics cards that you can use with your Mac.
The Wolfe comes in two different versions. The first version, known as The Wolfe, comes with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950 and costs #399; the Wolfe Pro, on the other hand, houses an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 and costs $570. Still, even the pro version doesn’t quite give a MacBook enough power for Virtual Reality, although they are more than perfect for almost any modern game out there.
However, according to the Kickstarter campaign, the company may offer a configuration with an NVIDIA GeForce 1060 GPU in the future, making this version perfect for the various VR technology that is currently out on the market and a worthy comptetitor to other VR ready laptops on the market.
According to the Kickstarter page, “The Wolfe allows high-performance gaming, virtual reality, graphic design, and video-editing for laptops – especially MacBooks.”
“You can browse the web, communicate, manage your data, and so much more — but there’s something missing. Sometimes, our laptops just aren’t powerful enough.
Laptops sacrifice performance for portability. For more intensive tasks like gaming, VR, and high-speed rendering, your laptop is held back by it’s weak, mobile graphics processor. Because of this, you’re expected to use a bulky, expensive desktop computer for these tasks. If you can buy an external hard drive to easily expand your storage, why can’t you do the same for your laptop’s performance?
That’s why we created the Wolfe – the affordable, easy-to-use device that removes these barriers and gives you the power to do all the gaming, design, and more — on the laptop you already own. You never have to buy a desktop again.”

In case you didn’t notice, the overall design is very MacBook like already, featuring a minimalist design much like a MacBook or MacBook Pro. The devices aren’t too heavy and they don’t take up too much space, although the Pro version is a bit beefier than the regular version. Still, it makes a perfect addition for an Mac lover that also loves to game and someone that may one day want to give VR a go.
While this device is still in its early stages, it is definitely very interesting, and could open the door for many Mac users to finally have access to the gaming they want on their favorite laptops. What do you think about this device? Is it wasted on Mac or is this the perfect third party addition to an already strong laptop platform? Let me know what you think in the comments below.
