The MSI CX62 7QL-058 is one of the most under rated and modest of MSI’s budget laptops. MSI has packed the CX62 with quite a few features that are usually only found on higher end laptops, such as a dedicated graphics card, USB 3.1 , Mini DisplayPort, Type-C and a Kaby Lake i5 processor. With 8GB of DDR4 RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce 940MX, the CX62 will run most AAA gaming titles on low to medium graphics settings. Unfortunately, you still get the same 1366 x 768 resolution display as last year’s model and they have even downgraded the hard drive to a slower 5400rpm mechanical hard drive.

One of the most affordable laptops in MSI’s line-up, the MSI CX62 7QL-058 offers users on a tighter budget an all-purpose laptop that can be used for gaming thanks to its dedicated NVIDIA graphics card and its seventh generation Intel-based processor. Sporting the latest generation Intel i5-7200U processor and 8GB of DDR4 2133MHz RAM, the CX62 7QL-058 will easily cope with basic tasks and will even run more demanding apps like Adobe Photoshop.

However, to save costs, MSI have once again used a cheap display panel on the CX range of laptops and this means that it is not ideal for design work. Not only does it sport a lower sRGB score than the higher-end MSI laptops, but it also only offers a maximum resolution of 1366 x 768. At just under $700, we would have liked to have seen a Full-HD display.

Luckily you will be able to connect a Full-HD or UHD/4K display via the Mini DisplayPort or HDMI. For gaming, MSI has added a NVIDIA GeForce 940MX graphics card with 2GB of dedicated GDDR3 video memory, which shows a slight performance increase from the standard 940M card. This is one of NVIDIA’s mid-range graphics cards and will run most AAA games on low to medium graphics in order to retain a frame rate of over 30fps. While last year’s model saw a faster 7200rpm hard drive, the CX62 7QL-058 sadly now comes with a much slower 5400rpm hard drive.

We recommend upgrading to a 7200rpm hard drive or even a superfast SSD. Due to its price, MSI has not used their SteelSeries keyboard and instead they have fitted the CX62 7QL-058 with a more cost effective alternative which still ensures that you have a comfortable and responsive typing experience.

Bottom Line

With its lower price, the CX62 7QL-058 is a winner for the gamer on a tight budget. While some of MSI’s flashy design features are missing, it’s still all MSI under the hood.

Don't let the GE62 chassis fool you - the CX62 is far too weak for most games and its 768p TN display is horrid.
