The Microsoft Surface Book 2 HMW-00001 13.5-inch 2-in-1 laptop has received positive reviews for its luxurious, lightweight build quality, featuring a magnesium body and “fulcrum hinges”. Users like its versatility thanks to its ability to readily transform into a tablet and most noted that it lasts around 15 hours between charges. Users loved the PixelSense display and many noted that the laptop drives a strong performance thanks to its 8th Generation Intel i7 CPU and 16GB of RAM. The dedicated NVIDIA GTX 1050 allows for decent 1080p gaming performance and the battery life of 17 hours is excellent. Criticism was directed towards the fact that it is doesn’t come with a Surface Pen and the GPU fan does become noticeably loud when it is being used, like when gaming. Furthermore, for a laptop that comes at this price, it does not come with Thunderbolt 3 support. The Microsoft Surface Book 2 features premium components for the huge price tag, but be aware that you will need to fork out extra in order to get the Surface Pen.
Pros
- Excellent PixelSense display
- Versatile
- Portable and lightweight
- Beautiful design
- Dedicated GPU
- 17 hour battery life
Cons
- No Thunderbolt 3
- Loud GPU fan
- No included Surface Pen
Bottom Line
Microsoft's Surface Book 2 13.5-inch laptop comes in a beautiful magnesium case that is fitted with powerful premium components, but for this price, the omission of Thunderbolt 3 support and no included Surface Pen is rather disappointing.

The Surface Book 2 is a satisfying sequel, but like many sequels, it may be trying to broadly serve too many audiences.

As it turns out, the best 2-in-1 laptop to date is just a bigger Surface Book – one that can play the latest PC games and last for a helluva long time to boot. Not to mention that this is the best tablet for drawing that we’ve tested yet, too. We just wish Microsoft did a bit more with the extra space afforded by the new 15-inch form factor.
