Best High-End Laptop Overall
1. Apple MacBook Pro 2020 MYD82LL/A M1 13-inch

The Macbook Pro is a solid staple of the high-end laptop market. Although to the untrained eye it may seem that every Macbook Pro model looks the same as the previous model, on closer inspection it’s easy to get an idea of how Apple still dominates the high-end laptop market with this incredibly well designed line of laptops. We’re happy to report that the 2020 MacBook Pro featuring Apples M1 brand new processors is no exception to this rule.
The big talking point of this year’s Macbook Pro launch is the launch of Apples new M1 processor. Instead of being made by Intel, this marks a new era for Apple laptops which will now get their own processors designed from the ground up. Although a big part of this is simply marketing hype, there may be some real benefits to this, including cheaper prices for more hardware for Apple users (or at least we can only hope so).
Reviews of the M1 chips so far have been positive, and the MYD82LL/A model also includes a 256GB SSD hard drive and 8GB of RAM to top it off. Although more RAM and hard drive space would be ideal for best performance or if you are a power user, for most users these specs will suffice perfectly. A notable feature of the M1 CPU is the inclusion of Apple’s very own integrated graphics unit for basic gaming.
Battery life is another area where the Macbook Pro is used to outperforming the competition. This year’s model offers some of the best battery life we’ve ever seen in a Macbook Pro, with Apple advertising up to 17 hours of usage. For such a high performing laptop that is an incredible feat only made possible by the continuous push from Apple to bring the latest technology to their companies.
Other highlights include a quick SSD hard drive which has some extremely fast write and read times, some of the best seen in a Macbook. Notable is also the inclusion of Apple’s Magic keyboard layout which has been improved on as a major selling point after the now infamous “butterfly” keyboards which caused many issues hassles in previous generations. Last but not least, Apples’ gorgeous Retina displays are as good as it gets on a computer screen in 2020. You simply won’t find better.
This Macbook Pro was not without its share of criticism on a few features. These include an extremely limited port selection – only two Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports that require various adapters in order to work with different cables. Needless to say, many of these adapters cost quite a bit extra. Another bone of contention for some reviewers was the Macbook Pros design staying relatively the same as previous years modes. While still maintaining Apples glory, the 2020 design sticks more on the conservative side compared to some of Apples more innovative updates in past years.
All things considered, if you can afford it, the Macbook Pro is extremely hard not to recommend to the average PC user thanks to its groundbreaking features and attractive design finish making it our top high-end laptop of the moment.
Pros
- Power hardware including Apples new M1 CPU
- Extremely good battery life
- Top-tier SSD hard drive for lighting-fast boot times
- Comfortable Apple ‘Magic’ keyboard

Best High-End Laptops Under $1500
2. Microsoft Surface Book 2 13.5-inch
Microsoft’s latest laptop, the Surface Book 2, is a 2-in-1 premium laptop that has wowed many users with its elegant looks and immense performance capabilities thanks to its premium components. This lightweight, 3.62-pound machine comes in a beautifully crafted magnesium body and it is fitted with a 13.5-inch PixelSense display that has a resolution of 3,000 x 2,000 (267 ppi). Disappointingly, Microsoft have not included a Thunderbolt 3 port, which we do see in many newer laptops, such as the Dell XPS 15. It does, however, come with a USB-C port. The Intel i7 8650U is one the most powerful processors around that can Turbo Boost up to 4.2 GHz, and the 16GB of RAM is more than enough to have a heap of applications and web pages open. The fact that it is fanless has also not affected performance according to reviewers, as it still delivers amazing performance while staying pretty quiet. Its ability to transform into different modes is what makes it such a versatile laptop. The screen detaches easily from the fulcrum hinges with the touch of a button and becomes a tablet, and it can be reattached backwards to change it into studio and view mode. The included NVIDIA GTX 1050 GPU is the discrete version, and it allows for some decent entry level gaming, but the GPU fan is said to get quite loud when gaming or video editing. This model comes with a decent sized 512GB SSD and both the front and rear camera quality is said to be great. Their are also a few of other accessories that one can use with the Surface Book 2, including the Surface Precision Mouse and the Surface Dial. If you are looking for a versatile 2-in-1 in laptop that is both elegant and incredibly efficient, then the Surface Book 2 will suit your needs.
Pros
- Excellent PixelSense display
- Versatile
- Portable and lightweight
- Beautiful design
- Dedicated GPU
- 17 hour battery life
Cons
- No Thunderbolt 3
- Loud GPU fan
- No included Surface Pen

Microsoft's Surface Book 2 13.5-inch laptop comes in a beautiful magnesium case that is fitted with powerful premium components, but for this price, the omission of Thunderbolt 3 support and no included Surface Pen is rather disappointing.

3. ASUS ZenBook Pro UX550VE-DB71T 15.6-inch
The ASUS Zenbook Pro UX550VE-DB71T 15.6-inch is another stunning addition to ASUS’s already gorgeous line of Zenbook models. It retains that same high quality aluminium casing and has a remarkably lightweight and thin design, which makes it highly portable. ASUS included a versatile range of ports, with two USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C ports with Thunderbolt 3 support, as well as two USB Type-A 3.1 ports. The NanoEdge FHD touch display is said to be good overall, reproducing 95 percent of the sRGB color spectrum and roughly 71 percent of AdobeRGB according to Digital Trends, and there is said to be very, very little light bleed, and the IPS panel does well with wide angle viewing. The keyboard is said to have some flex, but many noted that it could be worse. The Zenbook Pro UX550VE-DB71T comes fitted with an Intel Core i7-7700HQ that has a base frequency of 2.8 GHz and a turbo clock rate of 3.8 GHz, and a solid 16GB of DDR4 RAM. The CPU and RAM run alongside a power Nvidia GTX 1050Ti, striking a great balance between a gaming and productivity orientated laptop. Sadly, as noted by some, the GPU doesn’t quite reach its full potential, which Notebookcheck suggest may be due to temperature throttling, but it still outperforms the GTX 1050 by quite a margin. The 512GB PCIE NVMe SSD is both lightning fast and spacious, allowing to save heaps of media files and you’ll boot up and load up programs in no time. Its battery life is said to be around 8 hours and 30 minutes under moderate use, which is impressive for a machine that is stacked with these types of high-end, power hungry components. It has a convenient built-in fingerprint reader that’ll ensure that your laptop is secure and it comes with room filling sound, thanks to the quad-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound audio.
Pros
- Great price for the performance
- Productivity beast
- Great display
- Versatile connectivity options
- Large SSD
- Dedicated GPU
- Good battery life
Cons
- GPU + CPU throttling
- Keyboard flex
- Coil whine
Specs
- Intel Core i7-7700HQ 2.8GHz [View Benchmarks]
- Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti 4GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]

Summary & Score
While the ASUS ZenBook Pro UX550VE-DB71T 15.6-inch seems to suffer from some coil whine issues and minor throttling, it still delivers an awesome performance in an attractive case, and is an excellent choice for those looking for a laptop that is suitable for both work and play.

4. ASUS ZenBook 3 Deluxe UX490UA-XH74-BL 14 inches
The ASUS ZenBook 3 Deluxe’s design is anything but dull. Its rigid aluminium body has a beautiful royal-blue color with a large golden ASUS logo slapped bang in the middle, along with golden edges around the display. The NanoEdge display is stunning, with the ultra-thin bezels giving it a 84% screen-to-body ratio overall, which is pretty impressive. With the lid closed, the entire body is only 0.5-inches thin and it has a overall weight of 1.1kg, meaning it is as portable as it gets. Its display is a crisp Full-HD IPS display that has a 100% sRGB gamut. Considering its compact build, it always impressive to see how modern ultraportables are able to pack so much power. The Zenbook 3 Deluxe boasts a powerful 8th Generation Intel Core i7-8550U processor and a whopping 16GB of RAM, which when combined with the super fast NVMe 512GB delivers a fast and smooth user experience. The Intel UHD Graphics 620 chip will allow you to do basic video and photo editing, and even some low-end gaming, but if you are looking to game, you can always make use of one of the two Thunderbolt 3 supported Type-C ports to plug in an external GPU dock. There is a third USB Type-C port too, but this only supports USB 3.1 Gen 1 speeds. ASUS claims that the battery life is around 9 hours, but users have found that it is around 5-7 hours at most, but using battery saver settings does increase it slightly. Fortunately, it charges to around 60% in around 49 minutes. Sadly, the “innovative cooling” system isn’t as effective as ASUS makes it out to be. It runs hot under load, and it heats up quite a bit – a common problem in the ultraportable laptops. Its keyboard is comfortable to use and it offers good feedback and has 1.2mm travel, and it’s backlit for those working in the dark. The touchpad doesn’t have dedicated buttons and it features a fingerprint reader to access Windows (it comes with Windows 10 Pro). There were quite a few folks who were very unimpressed with ASUS customer support, finding their overall attempts at resolving issues immensely frustrating.
Pros

5. Dell XPS 15 9560-7001SLV-PUS 15-inch
The Dell XPS 15’s 4K InfinityEdge display is one of the best screens available, and Dell have thrown a decent GPU into a mix of already powerful hardware, making it an awesome all purpose laptop.
Dell’s XPS 15 9560-7001SLV-PUS is the larger version of the highly regarded 2015 Dell XPS 13. The first thing many notice about this laptop is its incredible display. The 15-inch IPS 4K InfinityEdge display is simply gorgeous, and it has a near 100 percent Adobe RGB color according to Notebookcheck, but not a full 100 percent as claimed by Dell. The display is also a touchscreen, and is said to be highly responsive, allowing you to “interact naturally with your technology” as per Dell’s description. The XPS 15 is an incredibly versatile machine, as it’s both suitable for productivity users looking for a powerful workstation thanks to its powerful 7th-Gen Intel Core i7 and 16GB of RAM, and it’s suitable for mid-tier gaming, thanks to its entry level NVIDIA GTX 1050. It’s clearly designed for power users, however, with laptops dedicated for gaming delivering a much better gaming performance in this price range. The GPU will also allow for some heavy duty video and photo editing, however. The XPS 15’s aluminium body feels great and the construction of the laptop is awesome. Some noted that it is surprisingly heavy, however. The battery life, according to users, when used moderately, is around 6-7 hours and typing is great thanks to the carbon fibre palm rest. Quality control is a major concern, however, since some customers received laptops that had various issues: no OS installed, faulty drivers, and damaged laptops. Fortunately, they were able to return them. But this is worth noting in case you do find yourself receiving a faulty machine. It runs quietly under moderate use, but stressing it does seem to make the fans get quite loud according to reports. This did not deter many people though, and most were immensely happy with their purchase. If you are looking for an excellent all purpose workhorse of a laptop that easily has a class leading display, then look no further than the Dell XPS 15 9560-7001SLV-PUS.Pros

Thin and light 2-in-1 laptops have become popular among those users who enjoy both laptops and tablets. The HP Spectre X360 15t closes the gap between the two markets and can easily be transformed into a super powerful Windows 10 tablet. The brilliant 4K touchscreen helps this laptop standout from the competition and will allow you to easily enjoy the best 4K series and movies right in the comfort of your own lap. With its modern stylish design, high performance specs, crystal clear and incredibly responsive multi-touchscreen display, the Surface Book is perfect for the working professional. Powered by an Intel Core i5-6300U processor and 8GB of DDR3 RAM, the Surface Book SX3-00001 has the power to tackle any office task that can be thrown at it. This will allow for some casual gaming, but more importantly it will allow for far better raw rendering power when it comes to design and architecture apps. The display offers a maximum resolution of 3000 x 2000, which gives it a ratio of 3:2. The crystal clear display offers great viewing angles and rich colors for Full-HD videos and full frame photos. The superfast SSD allows you to boot into Windows in seconds and will allow your apps to launch with lightning fast speeds. 8. Apple Macbook Pro MPTT2LL/A 15.4-inch
The 2017 Apple Macbook Pro MPTT2LL/A 15.4-inch laptop is the newest version of Apple’s stunning, but expensive range of Macbooks. It shares the beautiful aluminum unibody design of its predecessor, but Apple have gone and made it 40% thinner, giving it an even more sleek profile. The omission of some key ports has received criticism, along with MagSafe charging port that was so well received. Apple has decided to use only USB Type-C ports (Thunderbolt 3) that will require additional adapters. Now something as simple as connecting a mouse has become a bit of headache. The Macbook Pro MPTT2LL/A, while super slim and portable, packs some impressive specs. The 2.9GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor and 16GB of RAM makes this computer production orientated, and running demanding audio or design applications on the market will be a breeze, especially since Apple have also included a Radeon Pro 560 with 4GB memory. The RAM is, however, not upgradable, which may be a drawback for some. The new Touch Bar will display shortcuts depending on what applications you are working in and promises to speed up your workflow. The integrated Touch ID allows you to quickly and safely approve Apple Pay transactions and will allow you to quickly switch user accounts and login securely. The 512GB solid state drive is fast and the 2880×1800 Retina display remains one of the most beautiful displays available on the market. The Macbook Pro MPTT2LL/A does come at quite a price however, and there are equally powerful windows machines that retail for lower prices. But most Apple fans quickly point out the convenience and productivity orientated approach Apple take with their machines, and the Macbook Pro MPTT2LL/A is no different.
Pros
- Touch Bar with Touch ID
- Powerful CPU
- Dedicated AMD graphics
- Large SSD
- Brilliant Retina display
- Great battery life
Cons
- No standard ports
- No MagSafe port
- Non-upgradable RAM
- Price
- No SD card slot

- Intel Core i7 2.9GHz
- Radeon Pro 560 4GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]

- Mac OS X 10.12 Sierra

9. Huawei MateBook X Signature Edition
Ultrathin laptops are really appealing as they offer excellent portability thanks to their lightweight constructions and they are packed with features one wouldn’t think is possible considering how thin they are. The Huawei MateBook X Signature Edition laptop has a 13-inch screen that is surrounded by an incredibly thin bezel, and Huawei have managed to stuff all of its impressively powerful hardware into the 12.5mm aluminium body, which itself is said to feel rather solid and sturdy. Trusted Reviews have pointed out that it has a poor selection of ports, coming with only two USB 3.1 type-C ports. One impressive feature is speakers, with Huawei teaming up with Dolby to deliver a Dolby Atmos sound system, with many pointing out that the audio is clear and some have even referred to it as class-leading. The Intel i7-7500U and 8GB of RAM are perfect for day-to-task handling, and they will make easy work of even some more demanding applications. However, the fanless design does lead to heating, so it is less functional under load, which is similar to the issues we see with the ASUS ZenBook UX430UA-DH74. The ASUS ZenBook UX430UA-DH74 does have a fan, however, but they are both within the same price range and suffer from similar issues relating to heating. The touchpad has been nailed by reviewers, who found it unimpressive, and at this price point, it is not surprising that reviewers expect more. The stylish Huawei MateBook X Signature Edition laptop is a great travel companion thanks to its excellent portability and sturdy construction, but push it too hard and it will overheat, which will be frustrating for those looking to maximize on productivity.
Pros
- Attractive price
- Even more attractive design
- Extreme portability
- Runs quiet
- Impressive specs
Cons
- Fanless design means overheating issues
- Touchpad needs improving
- May hinder productivity
- Port selection

10. Lenovo Yoga 720 81C3005PUS
Although the IPS display is crisp, it may not be bright enough for some, but most will agree that Lenovo Yoga 720 81C3005PUS has an attractive price tag for the strong performance it’s able to deliver.
It seems that 2-in-1 laptops are making their mark in the productivity orientated ultrabook market, with models such as the HP Spectre X360 and the Microsoft Surface Book being a popular choice for the modern day person looking for efficiency. The Lenova Yoga 720 81C3005PUS 13.3-inch offers the same lightweight efficiency and versatility thanks to its ability to double up as a tablet and its excellent set of features. The Yoga 720 is well priced for the performance it is able to deliver, and this may be due to the fact that Lenovo have kept onboard graphics (HD Graphics 620) as opposed to going with a dedicated card as we have seen with other pricier ultrabooks. However, this does mean that super demanding video editing and photo editing programs may take a hit, but there is still plenty of processing power thanks to the 8th Generation Intel i7-8550U CPU that is backed by 16GB of RAM. Storage space will also not be much of an issue since there is a spacious 512GB M.2 PCIe SSD that has fast data transfer rates and it will allow your laptop and applications to load up in seconds. The lightweight (2.9 pounds), sleek design is both eye catching and highly portable, and its ability to readily transform into a tablet is what makes these hybrids so great for business meetings. The touch screen display has a resolution of 1920 x 1080, and this may be another reason why it is lower priced when compared to the other giants in the workstation market that all sport 4K resolution. Most noted that its color representation is great and it is responsive to the touch, but technical review sites such as notebookcheck.com noted that the display could be brighter. Furthermore, the screen is said to exhibit PWM flickering, which may lead to headaches for some users. It has a good battery life of around 8 hours when not used under load, which will get you through the day. If you don’t need a laptop that has a dedicated card for hardcore video editing or gaming, then the Lenovo Yoga 720 81C3005PUS will provide you with everything you need.

Dell XPS 13 9370 13.3-inch
Dell’s XPS 13 9370 has been described as the best laptop made by Dell by Techadvisor, and it is not hard to see why. It comes in a smaller case than the previous XPS 13 9350-5340SLV (which was and still is immensely popular), and packs enough power to easily outcompete most of the competition in this price range. The sleek build is subtle and attractive and the inside has a carbon fibre finish that has wowed many reviewers. One of its strongest features is the display. The 3840 x 2160 UHD display featuring the InfinityEdge design, meaning it has a thin bezel around it that is hardly noticeable, resulting in an 80.7 percent screen-to-body ratio, and to top it all off, it is a touch screen. The display is said to have incredible color representation and thanks to the high resolution, the level of detail is breathtaking. The keyboard offers a great typing experience, and it has a two-level backlight, and the trackpad was found to just as excellent. Dell have chosen to use the Intel i7-8550 CPU, a powerful CPU that handles tasks like a dream, but the Dell XPS 15 9560-7001SLV-PUS uses the i7-7700HQ, which is still slightly stronger than the U-series featured in the model. However, as pointed out by Windows Central, it scored higher on Geekbench 4.0 test for its single-core and multi-core performance than the Surface Book 2, a favorite of ours. The 16GB of RAM is more than enough for most, and it has an all-day battery life of around 8-hours according to reviewers, which great for a laptop that features such powerful hardware and that has 4K display. Cooling seems to be a bit of an issue – as it is with most ultra thin ultrabooks – and one user noted that there seems to be a bit of CPU throttling, but it only slightly impacts overall performance. On top of the laptop getting noticeably warm, the fans will become audible as they work hard to keep things cool, and this may annoy some users looking for a quiet experience. The 512GB PCIe solid state drive is fast, and booting up and application load times will be fast, and that speakers are said to be great when compared to other laptops. For connectivity, you will get 2x Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports and USB 3.1 and it no longer features an SD card slot or USB-A ports.

Samsung Notebook 9 NP900X5N-X01US 15-inch
While there are loads of Ultrabooks on the market, we rarely hear anything from Samsung. However, they make some great Ultrabooks that are packed full of great hardware and offer amazing features. The Samsung Notebook 9 NP900X5N-X01US is one of these amazing Ultrabooks and features an elegant magnesium alloy body which you would expect from a premium laptop. Measuring in at just 0.6-inches thick and weighing in at 2.7-pounds, this mode from Samsung’s Notebook 9 line can easily be slipped into your bag or backpack while you are on the go. Another notable feature is the laptops Fast Charging function. This will allow you to get about 2 hours of battery life off of a quick 20 minute charge. The Samsung Notebook 9 NP900X5N-X01US not only looks good, it also features a seventh generation Intel Core i7-7500U processor and 16GB of DDR4 RAM. These combined will easily handle any day-to-day tasks and can also handle more intensive applications. Some reviewers have criticized the Samsung Notebook 9 NP900X5N-X01US for its Full-HD display as its predecessor features a much higher resolution QHD display. However, this is not a deal breaker as the IPS Full-HD display offers great viewing angles and crisp colors. You also get a very thin display bezel which adds to this laptops premium feel. While it does feature a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce 940MX graphics card, this is not a laptop for hardcore gamers and will struggle with newer titles and higher settings. When it comes to storage, the Samsung Notebook 9 NP900X5N-X01US features a superfast M.2 solid state drive for quick boot times and lightning fast application launches. However, with only 256GB of storage space, the Samsung Notebook 9 NP900X5N-X01US will fill up quickly if you have a large amount of multimedia files. You can upgrade the M.2 drive to a larger 512GB or 1TB yourself, however, make sure that you backup any files that you have on the laptop and use a trusted storage drive cloning application.

Apple MacBook MJY42LL/A 12-Inch
The latest version of the MacBook replaced the old 13-inch version in 2015, being much lighter and thinner than its predecessors. Replacing the previous generations Intel Core 2 Duo processors is a Dual-Core Intel Core M Processor, which has been criticized by some Apple fans, but this CPU is one of the most revolutionary processor to be released in the last few years. Being 50% smaller than other Intel processors and not requiring a fan for cooling, the Core M allows for the new MacBook to be a mere 0.52-inches thick. Backing this new generation of mobile processor is 8GB of LPDDR3 RAM that helps conserve power and allows the new MacBook to offer an average battery life of over 14 hours. The lightning fast 512GB of PCIe based flash storage offers enough space for professional writers and editors, but will fill up quickly if it is used for storing multimedia. The 12-inch display offers an unusual 16:10 aspect ratio and an unusual resolution of 2304×1440. Like some of Apple’s more premium machines the new MacBook comes standard with a Retina display and thanks to IPS technology it offers wide viewing angles and rich colors. One of the biggest criticisms of the new MacBook is that Apple has done away with all of the ports that you would expect to find on a laptop and have replaced it with a single USB Type-C port. This means purchasing an adapter to be able to connect a standard USB device or connect an external monitor or TV via HDMI or VGA. While it looks sleek and allows the laptop to retain a thin profile it is far from convenient. All in all, the new MacBook offers a sleek design that weighs in at 2lbs, making it extremely light and portable for Mac users on the go.
