Finding-the-Best-High-End-Gaming-Laptops

Welcome to our guide to the best VR-Ready laptops and high-end gaming laptops based on raw hardware performance, critic and user reviews, design and general pure gaming pedigree.

Getting one of these epic gaming rigs will ensure everybody knows you mean serious business. They offer extremely competitive hardware and high framerates for modern titles featuring the latest Intel and AMD processors, a healthy amount of RAM and high-end graphics enough to rival even desktop gaming performance. More than that, many of these offer enough hardware power to function as a 4k gaming laptop on higher resolutions as well as the extremely high-performance demands of VR headsets such as the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. Most experts recommend a minimum of a GTX 980M or GTX 1070 to be able to experience playable frame rates for the current bread of VR games on a virtual reality PC. Keep in mind, however, that for these power hungry beasts battery longevity and mobility may not be their strongest suites. A GTX 1070 laptop with a large 17-inch displays is preferable for VR gaming but there are also smaller display options which offer portability at the cost of trimmed down feature sets. Serious gamers who want an uncompromising gaming experience for the foreseeable future should be prepared to battle it out here for their top choice.

The flashy black and red design may not appeal to all, but the first-class performance offered by the Kaby Lake i7-7700HQ processor and 16GB of RAM certainly will. Acer have shoved a GTX 1070 under the hood, which has 8GB of dedicated GDDR5 VRAM, and yes, it is VR-ready. 1080p games will run smoothly, and 4K will be manageable, but at reduced settings. The 1080p 17.3-inch IPS display has received praise all round, and users liked the RGB backlit keyboard that is customizable, allowing you to customize your colors and macro profiles. The Predator 17 G9-793-79V5 is bulky however, weighing in at 9.3 pounds, and lugging it to your local coffee shop for a work session is definitely going to prove tiresome. Most found that it lasts around 3 hours with the correct settings in place. It has a good port selection and comes with a Thunderbolt 3 port and 4 USB 3.0 ports. The 256GB SSD allows for a responsive overall system and 1TB HDD affords you plenty of storage space. ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501VI-XS74 15.6-inch

ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501VI-XS74 15.6-inch
We all know of the mammoth ASUS ROG laptops that have been on sale for a number of years now. However, times are changing at ASUS and the new ROG Zephyrus range is far from what the ROG range used to be. You now get a powerful gaming laptop that is a mere 0.7 inches thin and weighs in at a light 4.9 pounds. However, that is not all that ASUS have redesigned, they have also made major changes to the keyboard and the trackpad. While this might scare off some users, this new layout is far better for gaming than traditional layouts. This new layout better simulates gaming on a desktop PC and you will no longer bump the trackpad while gaming like on traditional laptop layouts. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 GPU with 8GB of dedicated video memory will run any of the latest gaming titles on the highest settings. The GPU will even allow you to use this ROG as a 4K gaming laptop and play games on a connected 4K monitor. However, the 15.6-inch display of the ROG Zephyrus GX501 offers great image quality and boasts an impressive 120Hz refresh rate, which is rare for most laptops. Not only do you get a higher refresh rate, the display also offers NVIDIA G-SYNC which allows the graphics card to synchronize its frame rates with that of the display. Not only do you get the most powerful mobile GTX 10-series GPU, you also get a powerful Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor and 16GB of DDR4 2400MHz RAM. This combination will not only allow you to play your favorite games, but will also allow you to run even more demanding applications on the ROG Zephyrus GX501. However, all this power has been crammed into a very thin laptop and while ASUS have promised that its cooling system will handle the heat, some users have commented that it does heat up quickly while gaming.

Pros

  • GTX 1080 GPU
  • 120Hz refresh rate
  • Great keyboard layout
  • Powerful i7 CPU
  • Windows 10 Pro

Cons

  • Heats up under load

Alienware AW17R4-7352SLV-PUS 17.3-inch

Alienware AW17R4-7352SLV-PUS 17.3-inch
Alienware is one of the most well-known brands when it comes to gaming PCs, and their laptops generally feature killer hardware specs and are more than powerful enough to handle any game that is thrown their way. The Alienware AW17R4-7352SLV-PUS is an insanely powerful gaming laptop that has a price to match. Alienware are known for offering laptops with amazing displays and the Alienware AW17R4-7352SLV-PUS is no exception, not only is it a high resolution QHD display, but it also offers a frequency of 120Hz, NVIDIA G-SYNC technology and last but not least, Tobii Eye-tracking technology. Its brilliant display is backed up by a powerful NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 and will allow you to enjoy any of the 2017 games that are currently on the market. This GPU will also give you the very best experience if you intend on using a VR headset. The GTX 1080 will also come in handy if you are an animator or a video editor as it will offer far superior rendering speeds compared to its GTX 1050 and GTX 1060 siblings. If this isn’t enough for you, then you could always purchase the Alienware Graphics Amplifier and a desktop grade GTX 1080 Ti. Though this is not necessary and is merely a lavish luxury. You also get a higher-end processor than most gaming laptops and instead of an i7-7700HQ, you get a far more powerful Intel i7-7820HK processor which can be further overclocked if you feel the need to get those extra bragging rights. Note: The model shown here only comes shipped with 8GB of RAM. To save $200-300 buy your own DDR4 2400MHz RAM and install it yourself to get the equivalent of the 16GB or 32G version for cheaper. We recommend a minimum of 16GB of RAM for best performance.

Pros

  • QHD display with Tobii and G-SYNC
  • Huge amount of RAM
  • Extremely powerful mobile GPU
  • Overclockable i7 processor
  • Great selection of ports

Cons

  • Heat buildup

Razer Blade Pro V2 RZ09-01663E53-R3U1 17.3-inch

Razer Blade Pro V2 RZ09-01663E53-R3U1 17.3-inch
Razer re-released the Razer Pro and while it had a huge price tag it seemed to run the same Skylake processor as its cheaper 14-inch brother. However, Razer have addressed this issue with the Razer Blade Pro RZ09-01663E53-R3U1, which now features a much faster Kaby Lake processor. It still retains its NVIDIA GTX 1080 laptop edition graphics card and we can’t really expect an SLI version as this laptop is just too thin to cram a second GTX 1080. Needless to say you will easily be able to play any game currently on the market on ultra-settings and with a 4K resolution. This card runs circles around its predecessor and will allow you to play future AAA gaming titles for some time to come. The Razer Blade Pro RZ09-01663E53-R3U1 has been updated and now features an overclockable Kaby Lake-based Intel Core i7-7820HK processor. This will allow you to push the processor from its 2.9GHz base clock speed to an impressive 4.3GHz overclocked speed. It still includes a massive amount of DDR4 RAM – 32GB to be precise, however, Razer have now gone for a 2667MHz RAM which should increase performance slightly for gaming and rendering multimedia files. You get a total of 1TB of storage space, which is organized in RAID 0 with two superfast 512GB M.2 solid state drives. You can upgrade to a massive 2TB of storage yourself at home with two 1TB M.2 SSDs, however this is not necessary as it isn’t cheap. The Razer Blade Pro RZ09-01663E53-R3U1 is the world’s first THX certified mobile device, and this will mean an immersive visual and audio experience unlike any other laptop. The 4K Ultra-HD display offers rich and vibrant colors and with 100% AdobeRGB color gamut coverage, the Razer Blade Pro RZ09-01663E53-R3U1 is also great for designers. It also features NVIDIA’s G-SYNC technology, which synchronizes the display’s frame rates with that of the graphics card for a superior gaming experience. Razer have also created the thinnest mechanical keyboard known to the world of laptop gaming. Not only do you get a thin mechanical keyboard, you also get Razer’s Chroma mood lighting technology. This individually backlit keyboard allows you to choose from 16.8 million colors and allows you to set various zones and lighting effects. Following in its predecessor’s footsteps, the Razer Blade Pro’s trackpad is on the right of the keyboard and can easily be customized and even features a scroll wheel.

Pros

  • Thin and light
  • Powerful NVIDIA GTX 1080 GPU
  • Mechanical keyboard
  • 2x 512GB M.2 SSDs
  • 4K touchscreen display
  • 100% AdobeRGB color gamut
  • THX certified mobile device

Cons

  • Huge price tag
  • Only three USB ports
  • No DisplayPort or optical drive
  • Only one USB 3.1 Type-C port

Specs

  • Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 8GB GDDR5X [View Framerates]
  • 32GB DDR4 2667MHz RAM
  • 512GB SSD / 512GB SSD
  • 17.3 inch, 3840 x 2160 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5.5 hours battery life
  • 7.69 lbs

Summary

The Razer Blade Pro RZ09-01663E53-R3U1 is an ultra-powerful gaming laptop for the hardcore gamer on the go. However, its huge price tag puts it out of reach for many gamers and its battery life is rather poor for gaming on the go.

ASUS ROG GL502VS-DB71 15.6-inch

ASUS ROG GL502VS-DB71 15.6-inch laptop
When it comes to high-end gaming laptops, there are only a few names that are worth considering and ASUS is one of them. Their Republic Of Gamers (ROG) laptops have always been some of the most sought after laptops when it comes to serious gamers. One of their latest offerings is the new ASUS ROG GL502VS-DB71 and like many of their products, it does not disappoint. While it is not the thinnest or lightest laptop, it is well below the industry standard when it comes to 15.6-inch gaming laptops. Powering this beast is a Skylake based Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor and 16GB of DDR4 2133MHz RAM, which combined will easily offer lag free gaming and enough power for designers and video editors. ASUS have jumped on board with the new 10-series range of NVIDIA graphics cards and the ASUS ROG GL502VS-DB71 features the GeForce GTX 1070 laptop edition. The GTX 1070 outperforms its predecessor and its performance is on par with the GTX 980M. The new Pascal architecture offers superior performance when it comes to VR gaming and will make the ASUS ROG GL502VS-DB71 more future proof as some of the other ROG laptops. To store all of your games and multimedia files, the ASUS ROG GL502VS-DB71 comes with both a 1TB 7200rpm mechanical hard drive and a superfast 256GB M.2 solid state drive. But with games ever increasing in size, you will have to choose which games you want to install on the SSD. The 15.6-inch Full-HD display offers wide viewing angles and rich colors thanks to its In-plane switching technology. You also get G-SYNC which allows the display to synchronize its refresh rate with the GTX 1070’s rendering rate.

Pros

  • Intel Skylake processor
  • G-SYNC display panel
  • HDD and SSD combo
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
  • Thin and light

Cons

  • Poor battery life
  • Smaller keyboard
  • Prone to heating up

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]
  • 16GB DDR4 2133MHz RAM
  • 256GB SSD / 1024GB 7200 RPM HDD
  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5 hours battery life
  • 4.8 lbs

Summary

The ASUS ROG GL502VS-DB71 is a thin and light gaming laptop that boasts the latest NVIDIA GTX 1070 graphics card. But the thinner design does mean that it is more prone to heating up than some of the thicker ROG laptops.

MSI GS65 Stealth THIN-051 15.6-inch

MSI GS65 Stealth THIN-051 15.6-inch laptop
The GS65 Stealth is one of MSI’s thinnest laptops that they have produced, and definitely their most impressive one yet. It is an ultraportable solution that features some of the hottest components currently on the market. Weighing in it at 4.14 pounds with a measurement of 0.69 inches thick, it will easily pass as just another book in your bag. The 15.6-inch display has a 82% screen-to-body ratio, so you will hardly notice the thin bezels around the edges. It has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 with an impressive refresh rate of 144Hz and it is an IPS display, which is vibrant and incredibly rich in color, receiving plenty of praise from Amazon customers. The keyboard has Per-Key RGB customization options thanks to the SteelSeries Engine 3, meaning you can customize the color scheme in any way you see fit. Intel’s new 8th Gen six core Intel Core i7-8750H processor and 16GB of RAM run the show, making easy work of tasks and allowing you to run multiple programs or browser windows at once without it breaking a sweat. The ROG Zephyrus M GM501GS-XS74, which is its biggest competitor, is also one of the few gaming laptops currently running the powerful Core i7-8750H. The GS65 Stealth contains the Nvidia GTX 1070 that makes use of the latest Max-Q technology, and when combined with the CPU and RAM, you will be able to render games at 60FPS in Full-HD with little trouble, and it supports VR. It has a pretty good battery life considering the fact that it is a high powered gaming laptop, with most noting that it lasts around five and a half hours when it comes to browsing the web and doing other non-gaming related tasks. For a laptop that is this thin, it isn’t shy of ports, featuring three USB 3.1 Type-A ports, Thunderbolt 3, a Mini DisplayPort, HDMI, and an HDMI port. While it features the Cooler Boost Trinity that is supposed to assist in cooling, the underside is still said to run hot, an issue that the thinner laptops can’t seem to shake.

Pros

  • Beautiful design
  • Barely noticable bezel
  • Gorgeous display quality
  • High-powered hexacore Intel i7-8750H
  • Excellent gaming performance
  • Fast NVMe SSD

Cons

  • Runs hot
  • Poor speaker quality
  • Storage too little for large game folders

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]
  • 16GB DDR4 RAM
  • 256GB SSD
  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 4.75 hours battery life
  • 4.14 lbs

Summary

The MSI GS65 Stealth THIN-051 gaming laptop is a top of the line gaming laptop that features a lot of the latest technologies, including a six core Intel processor and a Max-Q GPU, but it suffers from heating issues, a problem we so commonly see with ultra thin gaming laptops.

GIGABYTE Aero 15X v8-BK4 15-inch

GIGABYTE Aero 15X v8-BK4 15-inch laptop
The first thing you will notice about GIGABYTE’s new Aero 15X v8-BK4 is that it hardly looks like an intimidating gaming laptop, but don’t be fooled, this subtle looking beast packs enough power to handle almost anything you throw at it without breaking much of a sweat. It is has an incredibly high quality aluminium chassis that gives it its premium look, and it is incredibly stable and portable thanks to its lightweight 4.6 pound design. It looks more like a machine geared towards creatives than it does a gaming laptop, and it has all the necessary hardware to deliver a top class gaming performance. The incredibly fast 144 Hz display is said to have a high color accuracy thanks to the X-Rite Pantone Color Calibration, making for a high quality viewing experience that is suitable for both gamers, videographers and photographers. There is practically no new bezel around the display, much like its competitor, the MSI GS65 Stealth THIN-051 15.6-inch. Under the hood you will find the the powerful new six core Coffee Lake processor by Intel, the i7-8750H, and the MSI GS65 mentioned above and the ASUS ROG Zephyrus M GM501GS-XS74 are some of the first to laptops host these CPUs that are far superior to the previous Kaby Lake series. The CPU, combined with the 16GB of RAM and the speedy 512GB NMVe SSD paves the way for a smooth user experience – programs and windows will load up in seconds and the system will be very responsive. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 is the Max-Q version, which is economical and it runs quieter and cooler than the normal GTX 1070 cards for laptops. That being said, there have been some complaints heat complaints, with many users noting that after extensive gaming sessions, or when running demanding applications, the laptop can run hot. We would recommend purchasing a cooling pad to help keep things cooler. It has an excellent battery life, with notebookcheck finding that it lasts around 8 hours 24 minutes when doing less demanding tasks, which blows the MSI GS65 Stealth THIN-051 (4.75 hours) and the ASUS ROG Zephyrus M (4.5 hours) out of the water. It has an awesome keyboard that features RGB per key lighting, but sadly the trackpad does not have the same high quality design, receiving some criticism from customers.

Pros

  • Premium chassis
  • Compact, sleek and portable
  • Great battery life
  • Blazing NVMe SSD
  • Stunning display
  • Very thin bezel

Cons

  • Heating issues
  • Webcam camera placement
  • Average trackpad

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]
  • 16GB DDR4 RAM
  • 512GB SSD
  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)

ASUS ROG Zephyrus M GM501GS-XS74 15.6-inch

ASUS ROG Zephyrus M GM501GS-XS74 15.6-inch
The ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501-XS74 had been sitting comfortably as one of our top picks for a while now, but its successor has been released, the ROG Zephyrus M GM501GS-XS74, alongside one of the thinnest gaming laptops that ASUS have created, the GS65 Stealth Thin. The GM501GS-XS74 has kept the awesome chassis that we saw in its predecessor, but the audio quality and battery life (even if it is by only a little) have been improved, along with the inclusion of the latest Intel Coffee Lake processor. The beautiful chassis is made from brushed aluminium, and it is incredibly thin and portable, weighing in at 5 pounds with a height of only 0.78 inches. It has a beautiful, lightning fast 144Hz display that looks great when gaming especially when combined with Nvidia’s G-Sync function. Notebookcheck did point out that the display accuracy is average however, finding in their tests that it covers 93% of the sRGB color space and 60% of the AdobeRGB color space. It is more than enough for gamers though. The keyboard and touchpad have been repositioned into their usual place and the keyboard is said to have a good feedback and features AURA, ASUS’s RGB lighting effects, allowing you to add your own personalized color combinations (you have millions of colors to choose from). The Intel Core i7-8750H is Intel’s latest six core beast that runs alongside a whopping 16GB of RAM. Needless to say, you’ll be able to run demanding programs with very little trouble. Interestingly, ASUS have added Nvidia’s GTX 1070 8GB and GTX 1080 8GB in the pricier model that don’t make use of Max-Q that we saw in the previous model, and this is where the GS65 Stealth Thin is superior, in our opinion. The Max-Q technology runs more efficiently, and when it comes to thinner gaming laptops, efficiency means a cooler and quieter laptop. The ROG Zephyrus GX501-XS74 is said to get quite loud under load, which can become annoying to some. Regardless, it is still a powerful card that will handle today’s games at max settings with ease, and it will comfortably run VR applications. The battery life is poor, even though the Optimus Mode feature promises to preserve some of your battery by disabling G-SYNC, allowing the system to switch between the GPU and the integrated graphics, but you can still expect around 2.5 – 3 hours with web browsing, and around an hour when gaming, so be prepared to remain plugged in. Another drawback is the exclusion of an ethernet port, forcing you to remain on WiFi.

Pros

  • Excellent chassis design
  • Great, Fast 144Hz display
  • Useful graphics switching technology
  • Upgradable memory
  • Top-tier gaming performance
  • Smooth gaming thank to G-SYNC
  • Good speakers

Cons

  • Poor battery life
  • No ethernet input
  • Loud fans

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]
  • 16GB DDR4 RAM
  • 1000GB 5400 RPM HDD / 256GB SSD
  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Windows 10 Pro
  • 4.5 hours battery life
  • 5.4 lbs

Summary

The exclusion of the Max-Q Nvidia cards means that the fans are noisy and there may be some unwanted heating under load, but the ASUS ROG Zephyrus GM501GS-XS74 is still one serious gaming machine that features Intel’s latest six core i7-8750H.

Alienware AW17R4-7345SLV-PUS 17.3-inch

Alienware AW17R4-7345SLV-PUS 17.3-inch
The Alienware AW17R4-7345SLV-PUS joins another a long line of dedicated gaming laptops and looks and feels every bit as high-end as we would expect. Even the LED lighting system is a bold statement of its gaming pedigree. You get a powerful NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 GPU to run any current AAA gaming title on the market. Compared to its predecessor the GTX 970M, the newer GTX 1070 offers higher frame rates, smoother performance and a better VR experience. This card will also run some of the top titles for some time to come, which gives some peace of mind for the future. Powering the Alienware AW17R4-7345SLV-PUS is a Kaby Lake Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor and 16GB of DDR4 2400MHz RAM, which can be upgraded to a maximum of 32GB. You will also be able to run the higher frequency 2666MHz, however due to the higher price tag this is not necessary. One of the bigger drawbacks is the fact that the Alienware AW17R4-7345SLV-PUS only ships with a 1TB mechanical HDD. It might be the fast 7200rpm drive favored by gamers, however for the price we expected at least a small 128GB or 256GB solid state drive. Luckily the Alienware AW17R4-7345SLV-PUS does feature an empty M.2 slot which supports a wide range of super fast SSDs that are currently on the market. We recommend the Samsung 960 EVO 500GB as it offers great performance, while still being easy on your wallet. One of the great design features of the Alienware AW17R4-7345SLV-PUS is the placement of some of its ports. While most gaming laptops feature the display ports, LAN port and charging port on the sides like conventional laptops, the Alienware AW17R4-7345SLV-PUS has these all at the back of the laptop. This offers a cleaner look while using the display ports for larger gaming monitors or plugging in a LAN cable. It also features both a Thunderbolt 3 and Alienware Graphics Amplifier port at the back of the laptop so that you can make use of more powerful desktop based GPUs in an external GPU dock.

Pros

  • GTX 1070 GPU
  • Great port placement
  • Rich audio and display
  • USB Type-C and Thunderbolt 3
  • LED lighting

Cons

  • Price
  • Only two USB ports
  • No SSD or optical drive
  • Battery life

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]
  • 16GB DDR4 2400MHz RAM
  • 1024GB 7200 RPM HDD

Razer Blade RZ09-01953E72-R3U1 14-inch

Razer Blade RZ09-01953E72-R3U1 14-inch
The Razer Blade has been CNC milled out of high-grade aluminum to offer you a thin and light laptop that has been filled with some great gaming hardware. Razer have done away with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M from their last generation Razer Blade and have gone for the newer and more powerful NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 laptop edition GPU. The newer GTX 1060 is based off of NVIDIA’s Pascal architecture and with 6GB of GDDR5, it offers far better graphics performance than the older GTX 970M. While VR gaming is still in a development phase for most of us, the GTX 1060 has been designed to perform far better than the GTX 900-series cards, giving it an advantage for future gaming experiences. However, if you really want to push the performance, then you can connect the Razer Core external GPU enclosure via the superfast USB 3.1 Type-C port. However the Razer Core and a faster desktop grade GPU will push up the price dramatically. Being a premium gaming laptop, it features the latest 7th generation Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, which will make light work of most games or intensive apps. The newer i7-7700HQ boasts a performance increase of 9% over its predecessor, giving it the edge when it comes to more demanding applications. Backing up the Core i7-6700HQ processor is 16GB of DDR4 2133MHz RAM, which combined will allow for lag free gaming or intensive multitasking. While all this hardware is quite powerful, the thin design means that it can heat up quickly, causing the fans to run most of the time. This might put off some users who are looking for a quieter machine for everyday use. While there is a 1TB version of the Razer Blade, the Razer Blade RZ09-01953E72-R3U1 features a decently sized 512GB SSD, which helps bring down the cost by a few hundred dollars. This will give you enough space to install some of your favorite AAA gaming titles, however some recent titles require over 50GB and will fill up your SSD quite quickly. Like the previous range, you get Razer Chroma which is Razer’s individually lit backlit keyboard. This will allow you to set three different color zones so that you can truly customize your Razer Blade. The brilliant 14-inch 1920 x 1080 pixel multi-touch display offers rich colors, wide viewing angles and is great for gaming or for media editing on the go. However, the display is a bit small for hardcore gamers, we recommend connecting the Razer Blade RZ09-01953E72-R3U1 to a decent size monitor for the best gaming experience.

Pros

  • Kaby Lake i7 processor
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060
  • Thin and light

Best High-End Gaming Laptops – Honorable Mentions

Velocity Micro Raptor MX50 15.6-inch

Velocity Micro Raptor MX50 15.6-inch
Velocity Micro might not be a brand that all of us are familiar with, but they have been in business for over 20 years and offer custom built laptops with top-end hardware and superior workmanship compared to their mass products rivals. Their laptops come fitted with premium parts as they don’t believe in offering the cheaper OEM parts found in most competitors which gives them a major edge over competing gaming laptops. After all, there’s nothing like being let down by a $35 OEM Wi-Fi card after forking out $1500 for a brand new gaming laptop. Their superior craftsmanship and customizable builds are designed for gamers who know exactly what they want from their laptop and the Velocity Micro Raptor MX50 can be customized to spec. The base model features a fast Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, 8GB of DDR4 2133MHz and a fast 275GB Crucial MX300 M.2 SSD. While the processor is fixed, both the RAM and storage can be customized and you can even add a second SSD or a large 2TB 5400rpm storage drive. While we would have liked to have seen a more powerful GPU, the Velocity Micro Raptor MX50’s NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 will still allow you to play the latest games, although newer and upcoming 2017 titles will have to be run on medium settings in order to retain good frame rates. While the GTX 1050 will struggle with true VR gaming and is not as future proof as other GPUs, the MX50 offers a more personalized and reliable gaming experience than it’s rivals.

Pros

  • Premium hardware
  • NVIDIA 10-Series GPU
  • Customizable
  • Full-color backlit keyboard
  • 100% US-Based Tech Support
  • No Bloatware

Cons

  • Entry-level GTX GPU
  • Only two full size USB ports
  • Battery life

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 2GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]
  • 8GB DDR4 2133MHz RAM
  • 275GB SSD
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 4 hours battery life
  • 5.5 lbs

Summary

The Velocity Micro Raptor MX50 offers superior craftsmanship and premium hardware for the gamer who is looking for a more customizable laptop. However the GPU is its weakest link and is not as future proof as other models.

Velocity Micro Raptor MX40 14-inch

Velocity Micro Raptor MX40 14-inch
While most gaming laptops on the market today come from the Far East, the Velocity Micro Raptor MX40 is another fine example of Velocity Micros keen eye for detail and their dedication to using premium hardware. Its smaller size makes it compact enough to take with while travelling and can easily be used by college students who require a more powerful laptop for assignments. The Velocity Micro Raptor MX40 features an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti from EVGA and is backed up by 4GB of GDDR5 video memory. This will easily allow you to run any current 2017 games on playable framerates and offers a boost in performance over the standard GTX 1050, though if you were hoping to play the very latest and greatest games on the highest possible settings, then you might want to consider a laptop with the more powerful NVIDIA GPU. If medium to high settings are fine for your gaming experience, then the Velocity Micro Raptor MX40 will not leave you disappointed and comes in a stylish and compact design to boot. One small drawback with the Velocity Micro Raptor MX40 is that the base model features a much slower 5400rpm hard drive. This can be replaced with a lightning fast SSD or an SSD and HDD combo if you can spend the extra money and want to customize it. As Velocity Micro is dedicated to offering great gaming hardware, they have also made sure that their systems come with no unwanted bloatware, this means that you can get straight to installing your favorite games instead of having to rid your new system of unnecessary applications.

Pros

  • EVGA GTX 1050 Ti
  • Seventh gen Intel i7 CPU
  • No bloatware
  • Premium retail hardware
  • 100% US-based lifetime support

Cons

  • Smaller display
  • Only available with the GTX 1050 Ti
  • Slow 1TB 5400rpm HDD
  • Only two full size USB ports

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 4GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]
  • 8GB DDR4 2133MHz RAM
  • 1024GB 5400 RPM HDD
  • 14 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5.5 hours battery life
  • 4.4 lbs

Summary

The Velocity Micro Raptor MX40 is a compact gaming laptop that offers powerful hardware and impressive lifetime support. Though we recommend customizing this laptop as the 5400rpm hard drive is far too slow for today’s gaming standards.

Razer Blade RZ09-01953E71-R3U1 14-inch

Razer Blade RZ09-01953E71-R3U1 14-inch
Razer have been creating top of the range gaming peripherals for a number of years now, and their range of gaming laptops share the company’s gaming pedigree. The new Razer Blade RZ09-01953E71-R3U1 has been updated and now sports a more powerful Kaby Lake processor which will allow you to run any current game on the market. The Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor boasts a performance increase of 9% over the last generation i7-6700HQ which will come in handy while working in more intensive applications. You also get 16GB of DDR4 2133MHz RAM which will allow you to easily run most applications and is more than enough memory for any current gaming title. You can look at upgrading to a higher frequency RAM kit, however this is not necessary for most users who will do just fine with the installed RAM modules. Keeping to its gaming pedigree, the Razer Blade RZ09-01953E71-R3U1 features the NVIDIA GTX 1060 laptop edition GPU with 6GB of dedicated GDDR5 video memory. This graphics card will easily run the latest gaming titles on ultra or high settings while still offering you decent frame rates. Titles such as Battlefield 1, GTA V and Titanfall 2 will run great on this machine, however the smaller M.2 SSD will mean that you will have to be selective about what games you can install on this laptop. With just 256GB of storage space, this superfast SSD will fill up almost instantly with games that are 50GB or larger. You can purchase a larger M.2 SSD for a fraction of the price of the larger models from Razer, however make sure that you have the know how before you undertake this upgrade yourself. While the Razer Blade is a small and compact gaming laptop it does come with a bit of a drawback, the thinner size means that it will heat up quicker while gaming or while using slightly more intensive applications. This in turn will kick the two fans into gear which might annoy some users who are looking for a quieter setup. Another drawback of the smaller form factor is the fact that the 14-inch display is not great for gaming, we recommend connecting the Razer Blade RZ09-01953E71-R3U1 to a monitor for a superior gaming experience.

Pros

  • Kaby Lake i7 processor
  • Thin and light
  • CNC milled aluminum
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060
  • USB Type-C

Cons

  • Heats up under load
  • Smaller SSD
  • Fans run most of the time
  • No Ethernet or optical drive
  • Expensive

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]
  • 16GB DDR4 2133MHz RAM
  • 256GB SSD
  • 14 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 4.75 hours battery life
  • 4.10 lbs

Summary

The Razer Blade RZ09-01953E71-R3U1 is a small gaming laptop that is packed with great hardware, however, the 256GB SSD is too small for users with larger Origin or Steam collections.

MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-002 15.6-inch

MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-002 15.6-inch laptop
When spending over $2000 you would expect to get a seriously powerful and impressive laptop. Even more so when you are buying a laptop for gaming purposes. The MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-002 enters the ring swinging with its impressive display. While most laptops feature 60MHz displays, the MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-002 features a much more impressive 120MHz display with a fairly impressive 3ms response time. It also boasts an impressive 94% NTSC color coverage, which equates to about 100% coverage of the AdobeRGB color space. This makes the MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-002 great for both gamers and creatives who need a brilliant display for editing and design work. To make sure that you can play all of the latest AAA games on the market, the Stealth Pro comes with a dedicated NVIDIA GTX 1070 with 8GB of GDDR5 video memory. While it might not be the powerful GTX 1080, the GTX 1070 can still handle its own and features improved performance over the widely used GTX 1060. This GPU will also handle VR gaming with both the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift. The MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-002 is run by a seventh generation Intel Core i7-7700HQ CPU and 32GB of DDR4 2400MHz RAM, meaning it will easily handle any game that you can throw at it. It will even perform lag free while you record game footage for your YouTube channel. A minor drawback of the MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-002 is that the 1TB hard drive is a slower 5400rpm drive and we would recommend swapping it out for something a bit faster.

Pros

  • Brilliant 120MHz display
  • Thin and light
  • Windows 10 Pro
  • NVIDIA GTX 1070

Cons

  • Higher price
  • 5400rpm hard drive
  • TN display

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]

  • Windows 10 Pro
  • 5.25 hours battery life

Summary

MSI GS63VR STEALTH PRO-229 15.6-inch

MSI GS63VR STEALTH PRO-229 15.6-inch
While many of MSI’s laptops are quite bulky, the Stealth range is thin and light. This makes a refreshing change for the gamer who doesn’t want a heavy and bulky laptop as an everyday carry. The build quality is great and the aggressive design complements its gaming pedigree under its hood. Not only does this MSI laptop look great, it also weighs in at a light 3.96 lbs and is 0.69-inches thick, which is not bad for a gaming laptop. However, one thing on the design that might annoy some users is the placement of the power button, and you should change your power settings to prevent your laptop from going to sleep when you accidently bump the button. Sporting the latest generation Kaby Lake Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor and a healthy 32GB of DDR4 RAM, the MSI GS63VR STEALTH PRO will run any current game with ease. To ensure that your games look amazing in the graphics department, MSI have fitted the GS63VR STEALTH PRO with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card with 6GB of GDDR5 video memory. The GTX 1060 will allow you to run almost every game on ultra settings at 1080p with a frame rate of over 30fps. However there are some games that will push this card to the limit and we recommend setting your settings slightly lower to prevent your frame rate from dropping too low. The Full-HD display offers vibrant colors and the viewing angles are pretty wide thanks to the IPS technology. Storage wise, MSI have fitted the MSI GS63VR STEALTH PRO with both a 1TB mechanical hard drive and superfast M.2 512GB SSD. The SSD will give you the edge you need and will save you precious seconds when loading into games. Another nice touch is the fact that the MSI GS63VR STEALTH PRO comes with Windows 10 Professional instead of Windows 10 Home, unlocking more of the features of Windows 10.

Pros

  • Kaby Lake processor
  • 32GB of RAM
  • 10-series NVIDIA graphics
  • Windows 10 Pro
  • Thin and light

Cons

  • Battery life
  • Power button placement
  • Price
  • Average sound
  • No optical drive

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]
  • 32GB DDR4 2400MHz RAM
  • 512GB SSD / 1024GB 5400 RPM HDD
  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Pro
  • 6 hours battery life
  • 3.96 lbs

Summary

The MSI MSI GS63VR STEALTH PRO is a thin and light gaming laptop that still manages to offer powerful hardware for the gamer on the go. However the sound is not the greatest and the price is a bit steep for some.
