Best Gaming Laptops Under $1500 – Top Picks

Acer Predator Helios 300 G3-571-77QK 15.6-inchAcer Predator Helios 300 G3-571-77QK 15.6-inch

Acer are known in the gaming world for their Predator line of gaming hardware, however, most of their Predator laptops have been priced out of reach for many gamers. This is where Acer have stepped in and taken note of the current trend of gaming laptops at around the $1000 mark. The Acer Predator Helios 300 joins the Predator range as a more affordable solution, however, Acer have had to make a few sacrifices in order to offer its attractive price. The first thing that should be noted is that the display is dimmer than some of its counterparts and it doesn’t reproduce as many colors as the higher-end Predator laptops. However, the display is not all bad news, as you do get a Full-HD display panel which uses IPS technology for far better viewing angles and the quality is not terrible for gaming and streaming media. You can always connect the Acer Predator Helios 300 to a monitor if you need a wider coverage of the sRGB color spectrum for work or college assignments. The Acer Predator Helios 300 is powered by a Kaby Lake Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor and is backed up by 16GB of DDR4 RAM. This will easily allow you to play your favorite games and will ensure that you can run even more intensive applications will little to no lag. While many of its competitors offer the GTX 1050 or GTX 1050 Ti, Acer have gone ahead and fitted the Acer Predator Helios 300 with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060. This card offers better performance for AAA gaming titles and is more suited for VR gaming than the two entry-level NVIDIA graphics cards. The 256GB M.2 SSD offers fast boot and game loading speeds, however it is a bit small for modern games. Titles such as GTA V and Mass Effect: Andromeda take up over 40GB each for their game install files. Luckily, the Acer Predator Helios 300 ships with the cradle for a SATA based storage drive and you can easily install a 512GB or 1TB SSD at home. If the SSDs are out of your price bracket, then you can also consider a good 7200rpm SATA storage drive to increase the laptop’s storage. However, this will mean losing the fast gaming loading advantage that SSDs provide. While the Acer Predator Helios 300 runs cool during everyday use, it will run hot while gaming or while you run more intensive applications. While this might put off some users, it is not at all uncommon for laptops in its price category and is not a deal breaker in our eyes.

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 7 hours battery life
  • 5.95 lbs

ASUS ROG Strix GL502VM-DS74 15.6-inchASUS ROG Strix GL502VM-DS74 15.6-inch

The name ROG is synonymous with high-end gaming laptops and the new addition to their ranks bares many of the same traits. You get a great looking laptop with a textured aluminum palm rest and a rigid feeling plastic bottom. You get a Full-HD display that offers good viewing angles and NVIDIA’s G-SYNC, however, some users and reviewers have mentioned that the display does feature a certain amount of backlight bleeding. If this will be a deal breaker, then we recommend that you stop reading now. If you can live with this minor issue then keep going. The ASUS ROG Strix GL502VM-DS74 features a powerful seventh generation Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, 16GB of DDR4 2400MHz RAM, a 128GB M.2 SSD and a 1TB 5400rpm hard drive. Though, the 128GB SSD will be far too small for installing your games on and the 5400rpm hard drive will be too slow. We recommend upgrading either one of the other to install your favorite games. No gaming laptop would be complete without dedicated graphics. In the case of the ASUS ROG Strix GL502VM-DS74 you get an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB of GDDR5 video memory. This GPU will easily handle modern games and you will have no issues running the latest 2017 AAA gaming titles. It can even be used for VR gaming as the GTX 1060 is a VR-Ready graphics card. Unfortunately, there is a known issue with heat buildup while gaming and this is a major let down as the ROG range are known for their great cooling systems. You will be able to tweak your settings in order to limit the heat buildup in a trade off for a drop in performance.

ASUS FX502VM-AS73 15.6-inchASUS FX502VM-AS73 15.6-inch

Gaming laptops have become extremely popular among gamers who want their rigs to be more portable, yet still powerful enough to play the latest game releases. ASUS are known for their mammoth ROG gaming laptops and while they are highly in demand with gamers, the company does offer the more affordable FX range of laptops. The ASUS FX502VM-AS73 is one of their more powerful FX models and features a powerful seventh generation Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, 16GB of DDR4 RAM and an SSD and hard drive combo. While the processor and the memory are more than enough for gaming, the 128GB SSD is arguably too small for modern games which can take up over 50GB of storage space each. The ASUS FX502VM-AS73 also features a 1TB hard drive, however it is a slow 5400rpm drive and installed games on it will be noticeably slower when loading. The key to any good gaming laptop is its dedicated graphics and the ASUS FX502VM-AS73 features a powerful GTX 1060 from NVIDIA. This VR-Ready GPU will easily allow you to play the latest 2017 games on the highest settings, though if you are using a 4K monitor you might want to turn down those settings. However, the ASUS FX502VM-AS73 has been criticized by some users for its subpar battery life and for its slightly odd keyboard layout, though the odd keyboard layout will just take some getting used to if you use the arrow keys for racing games.

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 4 hours battery life
  • 4.9 lbs

Pros

  • Dedicated NVIDIA graphics

  • Attractive price
  • Great Full-HD display
  • SSD and HDD combo

Cons

  • Battery life
  • Tiny SSD
  • 5400rpm hard drive
  • Odd arrow keys layout

Summary

The ASUS FX502VM-AS73 offers great gaming hardware for a great price, though the small SSD is not ideal for installing all of your favorite games and the keyboard layout is not ideal for those games that require the arrow keys.

ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB76 15.6-inch

ASUS M580VD-EB76 VivoBook 15.6 laptopThe ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB76 is a rather unassuming gaming laptop. It has a premium look, much like its the ZenBook line, and therefore looks like it could be geared more towards work than gaming. The sleek, stylish ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB76 flexes a powerful Intel Core i7-7700HQ quad-core processor, which is backed by 16GB DDR4 RAM. It has a dedicated Nvidia GTX 1050 GPU that runs most modern day AAA games and easily runs high demand photo and video editing software. It features a matte 1080p FHD screen with 100% sRGB color gamut, but it is a TN-based display, and not IPS, meaning that one’s viewing angles will be average. The battery life is said to last around 4-5 hours, and while ASUS says the VivoBook M580VD-EB76 has an intelligent cooling system, it is reported to run hot during high-load multitasking and gaming sessions. Measuring in at 0.8 X 15 X 10 inches, and with a weight of 5.1 pounds, it weighs close to what the Macbook Pros and the Dell XPS 15 touch weigh, and therefore makes it practical in terms of portability. At the bottom of the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB76 are two speakers that drive out good audio for a laptop, with one user even suggesting that it pushes some decent bass. It features chiclet-style keys and the USB 3.1 Type-C port allows for super fast transfer speeds and will also allow for users to connect a Thunderbolt compatible display. The SSD is fast and has 256GB of storage space, while the slower, 5400RPM mechanical hard drive has 1TB of storage space.

MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-034 15.6-inchMSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-034 15.6-inch

MSI Gaming laptops have always been a bit bulky, however the MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-034 proves that powerful hardware can be packed into a thinner laptop. The MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-034 features an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 laptop edition with 6GB of GDDR5 video memory. This will easily allow you to play the latest AAA gaming titles and offers far superior performance compared to the previous generation GTX 960M GPU. The GTX 1060 has also been designed for far better performance with virtual reality setups and will easily handle the Oculus Rift. While some of MSI’s laptops are currently running the Kaby Lake processors, the MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-034 still features the popular Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor from the Skylake generation. While it might be a generation behind, this processor will easily keep up with your gaming needs and will have no issues running video and photo editing applications. It also features 16GB of DDR4 2400MHz RAM and offers a slight increase in performance over the widely used DDR4 2133MHz RAM. To insure that your Windows will boot in seconds, the MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-034 features a 256GB M.2 solid state drive. However, if you have a large collection of games and you want them to benefit from the advantages of an SSD, then you might want to consider upgrading the SSD to one with more storage. Otherwise, there is a much slower 1TB 5400rpm mechanical drive that offers ample storage space. This too can be upgraded to a faster 7200rpm HDD or a SATA based SSD. The SteelSeries full color backlit keyboard has been specifically designed for gaming, making your keystrokes fast and responsive for gaming and word processing. While the laptop measures in at a thin 0.69-inches, the powerful hardware will create quite a bit of heat while gaming or using intensive applications. This will mean that the system will run the cooling fans more often than not and might be a deal breaker for those looking for a quieter laptop.

  • Intel Core i7-6700HQ 2.6GHz [View Benchmarks]
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]
  • 16GB DDR4 2400MHz RAM

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5 hours battery life
  • 3.96 lbs

Pros

  • NVIDIA 10-series GPU
  • Good Full-HD display
  • USB 3.1 Type-C
  • Thin and light
  • VR Ready

Cons

  • Power button placement
  • 5400rpm HDD
  • No optical drive
  • Battery life
  • Heat build-up

Summary

The MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-034 is one of the thinnest laptops on offer from MSI and has been packed with powerful gaming hardware. However, the 0.69-inch thin body will mean heat buildup, kicking in the cooling fans.

MSI GE62 Apache Pro-001 15.6-inch

Performance and customization are two big things to consider when buying a gaming laptop and the MSI GE62 Apache Pro-219 ticks both those boxes. With its fully customizable color LED backlit keyboard users can set the backlight to their mood and of course the Apache Pro-219 delivers impressive performance for even the latest games. Being able to run most games on high to ultra settings while at a resolution of at least 1080p is a must for laptops of this price range and the Apache more than delivers. As with most gaming laptops, however, the battery life is underwhelming.

Top Gaming Laptops Under $1300

ASUS ROG Strix GL553VD 15.6-inch

ASUS ROG Strix GL553VD 15.6 laptop

With its Kaby Lake 2.8-GHz Intel Core i7-7700HQ CPU and 16GB of RAM, ASUS ROG Strix GL553VD 15.6-inch laptop packs enough power to ease through your day-to-day tasks. The Full-HD IPS display has been praised by many, and it has wide, 178-degree viewing angles. Some may be disappointed that the screen is not 4K, but 4K screens generally push the price up of a laptop up quite a bit. ASUS have installed a 1TB 7200RPM hard drive, which is ample storage space, but it is slower than a solid state drive, which is becoming more commonplace in this day and age, especially at this price. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 with its 4GB of RAM is a mid-level card that handles most AAA titles reasonably well, but it is not as future proofed as the more powerful GTX 1070 and GTX 1080. The RGB aura keyboard has 4-zone customizable lighting, meaning that you can customize the back lighting of the keyboard to suit your play style. The battery, much like most gaming PCs, is not the best, lasting around 5 hours at most. The USB Type-C allows for quick data transfers and it allows you to connect a Thunderbolt compatible display. The sound quality is mediocre according to most reviewers, with most finding that they sound tinny. Some also noted that the fans can get quite loud when the ASUS ROG Strix GLGL553VD is pushed to perform, and this can be quite annoying. For the price, one would wish that ASUS at least included an SSD or a GTX 1060, but otherwise the ASUS ROG Strix GLGL553VD is a decent gaming laptop.

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5 hours battery life
  • 5.5 lbs

Pros

  • Powerful Intel Core i7-7700HQ
  • Beautiful FHD display
  • USB Type-C port
  • RGB backlit keyboard
  • GeForce GTX 1050 is decent

Cons

  • No SSD
  • Poor battery life
  • Price
  • Mediocre speakers
  • Loud fans

Summary

For the price, ASUS have cut some corners with the mechanical hard drive, but otherwise the ASUS ROG Strix GL553VD is a decent gaming machine with a powerful CPU.

ASUS ROG Strix GL502VM-DB71 15.6-inchASUS ROG Strix GL502VM-DB71 15.6-inch

The ROG range of gaming laptops from ASUS have always been on the frontline of offering a great gaming experience. The ASUS ROG Strix GL502VM might not be winning the race for the thinnest gaming laptop, but at 4.9 pounds and at just 0.94 inches thick, it is below the category standard. You get the usual aggressive gaming looks that you will find on the higher-end ROG laptops, but ASUS has toned it down just a bit to offer a very sleek laptop. Sporting an Intel Skylake Core i7-6700HQ processor and 16GB of DDR4 2133MHz RAM, the ASUS ROG Strix GL502VM will easily offer lag free performance when it comes to current gaming titles. You can upgrade the RAM to a maximum of 32GB and ASUS have left one slot free to add a second 16GB RAM module. We recommend the G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 2400 (2 x 16G) kit as a replacement for an improved gaming experience. ASUS have also gone with the new 10-series graphics from NVIDIA and features the GeForce GTX 1060 laptop edition. The GTX 1060 offers a huge improvement in performance over its predecessor the GTX 960M. You now get 6GB of GDDR5 video memory and you will be able to play demanding titles such as Battlefield 4, The Division and Fallout 4 on ultra settings. You will however see a massive drop in frame rates with a 4K monitor and a resolution of 3840 x 2160. You get a single 1TB 7200rpm mechanical hard drive, but there is a free M.2 slot for you to add a superfast solid state drive. The Full-HD display offers wide viewing angles thanks to its In-plane switching technology and offers a good 83% sRGB color gamut, which is good news for designers.

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5 hours battery life
  • 4.9 lbs

Pros

  • Intel Skylake i7 processor
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060
  • USB 3.1 Type-C
  • Thin and light
  • Empty M.2 slot

Cons

  • No SSD as a standard
  • Heats up under load
  • Plastic design
  • Battery life
  • No optical drive
  • ASUS bloatware

The ASUS ROG Strix GL502VM offers powerful hardware in a thin and light design, but the reduced size means that it will heat up more than some of the other ASUS ROG laptops.

ASUS ZenBook Pro UX501VW-DS71T 15.6-inch

Packing some high-end components inside a sturdy unibody chassis, the ASUS Zenbook Pro UX501VW-DS71T is designed to be an all-in-one solution for business users, graphics professionals and moderate gamers. The 15-inch Zenbook Pro has a simple yet elegant design with a silver finished aluminum construction with ASUS’s signature concentric ring on the outer lid. At 0.8 inches thick and weighing 5 pounds, it is a bit heavier and thicker than competitors like the Macbook Pro and Dell XPS 15, although it must be noted that the latter devices cost about $500 more while packing similar hardware. The keyboard on the Zenbook Pro offers a comfortable typing experience and it is complemented by a spacious palm rest which is also metal covered. Besides three USB 3.0 ports, this upgraded UX501VW features a USB Type-C port with Thunderbolt 3 support. However, like many modern laptops, it is missing the miniDisplay port, Kensington Lock and Ethernet port. The laptop’s 15.6-inch touch screen supports a maximum resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels, making it ideal for photo or video editors. Featuring an Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor, a whopping 16GB of DDR4 RAM and a fast 512GB SSD, the Zenbook Pro is able to meet your multimedia, productivity and everyday needs. You will also be able to run some modern games thanks to the dedicated NVIDIA GTX 960M GPU. While the previous Zenbook Pro had a meager 4 hours of battery life, the UX501VW-DS71T lasted a solid 8 hours on Laptop Mag’s battery test.

While essentially identical to the the top end ASUS ROG G751JY-WH71(WX), this version comes with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M. While still providing a high level of performance the only noticeable difference is when gaming. While the 970M is a very capable GPU it falls just short of the 980M’s performance. The ASUS Intelligent Thermal Vent system keeps the machine cool and quiet even during intense gaming sessions. The display is a gorgeous FHD IPS with great color representation and contrast. ASUS SonicMaster sound delivers crisp audio and the external subwoofer takes care of the normally lacking lower frequencies. Coming in at around $150 cheaper it may be well worth the investment for users on a tighter budget and who aren’t too concerned with ultra graphical settings.

ASUS ROG GL752VW-DH74 17.3-InchASUS ROG GL752VW-DH74 17.3-Inch

The ASUS ROG GL752VW-DH74 is an updated version of the ROG DH71. Sporting an Intel Skylake Core i7 6700HQ processor and a 16GB of DDR4 RAM, the ASUS ROG GL752VW-DH74 will cope with any day-to-day tasks with ease. Ample storage space is provided by a 1TB mechanical hard drive running at 7200 RPM, and a lighting fast M.2 128GB solid state drive provides fast boot and game loading times. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M offers good graphics performance and the updated 4GB of GDDR5 VRAM offers better performance than the ASUS ROG GL752VW-DH71. The GTX 960M will easily be able to run all the latest generation of games at relatively high frame rates, but the GTX960M is a mid-range graphics card meaning it’s not as future proof as models sporting the GTX970M or GTX980M cards. The display offers rich colors and wide viewing angles are provided by its in-panel switching. While the ROG GL552VW-DH74 does not come with a QHD+ or 4K display, the 17.3-inch does offer Full-HD and a maximum resolution of 1920×1080. The USB 3.1 Type-C port allows for super fast transfer speeds and will also allow for users to connect a Thunderbolt compatible display. If you are on the hunt for a gaming powerhouse and you have a little extra to spend, you can’t go wrong with the ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH74.
