ASUS ROG Strix GL702VS-AH73 17.3-inch

ASUS ROG Strix GL702VS-AH73 17.3 laptop
The Acer Predator Helios 300 G3-571-77QK 15.6-inch has been a firm under $1500 gaming laptop favorite of ours for quite some time. Its price was unbeatable, especially since it came with fantastic hardware that delivered excellent gaming performance. The ASUS ROG Strix GL702VS-AH73 17.3-inch laptop has emerged out of this highly competitive market, and it offers us a better price-to-performance ratio thanks to the inclusion of the mighty NVIDIA GTX 1070 that tears through games and demanding multimedia editing software, especially since it has been combined with the powerful Kaby Lake i7-7700HQ 2.8 GHz and 12GB of RAM to give you the best possible performance. ASUS have opted for an ultraportable case, and have gone with an aluminium lid and plastic body. The 17.3-inch G-Sync IPS display is stunning, and it has a refresh rate of 75Hz, which will give you a smooth incredibly viewing. It comes with a red-backlit chiclet style keyboard that has minimal flex and the keys are said to have great travel. The touchpad is not great for a laptop of this class, and definitely needs improvement. We have seen that most gaming laptops struggle when it comes with battery life, and the The ASUS ROG Strix GL702VS-AH73 is sadly no different. Most have found that it lasts around 1hour 30minutes when gaming, but this is not surprising considering the all the power hungry muscle it packs. The USB Type C port (with thunderbolt) ensures lightning quick data transmissions and it comes with three USB 3.0 ports and a DisplayPort and HDMI port for those who want to plug in an external monitor. It runs quietly overall, with the fans delivering very little noise, but concerns were raised with its cooling. The Hyper Cool Duo-Copper cooling system is not as efficient as most had thought, as some did note that it runs hot during demanding operations, and this may affect your overall performance.

Pros

  • Great price for laptop with NVIDIA’s GTX1070
  • Lots of muscle
  • G-Sync display
  • Portability
  • Great construction

Cons

  • Runs hot
  • Slower mechanical HDD

  • Disappointing touchpad

Best Gaming Laptops Under $1500 – Runners-Up

Acer Predator Helios 300 G3-571-77QK 15.6-inch

Acer Predator Helios 300 G3-571-77QK 15.6-inch
Acer are known in the gaming world for their Predator line of gaming hardware, however, most of their Predator laptops have been priced out of reach for many gamers. This is where Acer have stepped in and taken note of the current trend of gaming laptops at around the $1000 mark. The Acer Predator Helios 300 joins the Predator range as a more affordable solution, however, Acer have had to make a few sacrifices in order to offer its attractive price. The first thing that should be noted is that the display is dimmer than some of its counterparts and it doesn’t reproduce as many colors as the higher-end Predator laptops. However, the display is not all bad news, as you do get a Full-HD display panel which uses IPS technology for far better viewing angles and the quality is not terrible for gaming and streaming media. You can always connect the Acer Predator Helios 300 to a monitor if you need a wider coverage of the sRGB color spectrum for work or college assignments. The Acer Predator Helios 300 is powered by a Kaby Lake Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor and is backed up by 16GB of DDR4 RAM. This will easily allow you to play your favorite games and will ensure that you can run even more intensive applications will little to no lag. While many of its competitors offer the GTX 1050 or GTX 1050 Ti, Acer have gone ahead and fitted the Acer Predator Helios 300 with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060. This card offers better performance for AAA gaming titles and is more suited for VR gaming than the two entry-level NVIDIA graphics cards. The 256GB M.2 SSD offers fast boot and game loading speeds, however it is a bit small for modern games. Titles such as GTA V and Mass Effect: Andromeda take up over 40GB each for their game install files. Luckily, the Acer Predator Helios 300 ships with the cradle for a SATA based storage drive and you can easily install a 512GB or 1TB SSD at home. If the SSDs are out of your price bracket, then you can also consider a good 7200rpm SATA storage drive to increase the laptop’s storage. However, this will mean losing the fast gaming loading advantage that SSDs provide. While the Acer Predator Helios 300 runs cool during everyday use, it will run hot while gaming or while you run more intensive applications. While this might put off some users, it is not at all uncommon for laptops in its price category and is not a deal breaker in our eyes.

Pros

  • Excellent Kaby Lake processor
  • Powerful gaming performance
  • Lightning quick M.2 SSD
  • Great performance
  • Easy to upgrade RAM and storage
  • Features USB Type-C port

Cons

  • Runs hot under load
  • Small amount of storage space
  • Only one USB 3.0 port
  • Poor battery life
  • Not the loudest audio
  • Not the brightest display

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 4GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]
  • 16GB DDR4 2400MHz RAM
  • 256GB SSD
  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 7 hours battery life
  • 5.95 lbs

Summary

The Acer Predator Helios 300 G3-571-77QK is an affordable Acer Predator laptop which even features a more powerful GTX 1060 compared to its competitors' GTX 1050 offerings. However, the tiny amount of storage space needs addressing if you own a larger game collection.

ASUS FX503VM 15.6-inch

ASUS FX503VM EH73 15.6-inch
The ASUS FX503VM is the successor to ASUS’s other popular gaming laptop, the ASUS FX502VM. The predecessor was known for heat issues under load and it’s underperforming TN display, which noticeably reduced viewing angles and colors often looked washed out. ASUS have fitted the FX503VM EH73 with a 15.6-inch Full-HD Wideview IPS display, which is an improvement over the TN display, but the heating issues seem to persist for most, with some users finding that cooling pads were the only way to really tackle the problem. The laptop’s design has appealed to many, featuring a matte finish (which is a bit of fingerprint magnet) with the ASUS logo on the back that feels and looks great according to most, and it doesn’t stand out as much as some of the more gaming oriented designs we have seen. It is reasonably light, making it portable, and its performances are top notch. The Kaby Lake i7-7700HQ is a powerful quad core processor that when coupled with the discrete NVIDIA GTX 1060 and 16GB of DDR4 RAM, it will handle games such as Overwatch, GTA V and Wolfenstein: The New Order in Full-HD beautifully. The GTX 1060 is also the minimum GPU for VR, so you will also be getting a VR-ready laptop at under $1000. The battery life is terrible, however, so expect to remain plugged in 90% of the time. The anti-ghosting, red backlitkeyboardhas a key travel of 1.8mm and most have found that it is comfortable to use. Their is more than enough storage space for games on the large, but slow, 1TB 5400RPM hard drive. It would have been nice had ASUS decided to install a 7200RPM hard drive instead, but we can’t really complain at this price point, especially since there is a fast 128GB M.2 SSD included that will run most of your important system files. You won’t be in short supply when it comes to port selection, but sadly there is no USB Type-C.

Pros

  • Strong performance
  • Rigid design quality
  • Powerful NVIDIA GTX 1060
  • 1TB HDD alongside a fast 128GB SSD
  • Good sound quality
  • Good quality IPS display

Cons

  • Heats up during intensive gaming sessions
  • Loud fans under load
  • No USB Type-C
  • slower 5400RPM HDD as opposed to 7200RPM

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 3GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]
  • 16GB DDR4 RAM
  • 1000GB 5400 RPM HDD / 128GB SSD
  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • 4 hours battery life
  • 4.9 lbs

Summary

The ASUS FX503VM EH73 offers exceptional value and it really is geared towards gaming thanks to the powerful VR-ready NVIDIA GTX 1060, CPU and generous RAM, and with the addition of a cooling pad, you will be able to keep things running cool and quiet.

ASUS FX502VM-AS73 15.6-inch

ASUS FX502VM-AS73 15.6-inch laptop
Gaming laptops have become extremely popular among gamers who want their rigs to be more portable, yet still powerful enough to play the latest game releases. ASUS are known for their mammoth ROG gaming laptops and while they are highly in demand with gamers, the company does offer the more affordable FX range of laptops. The ASUS FX502VM-AS73 is one of their more powerful FX models and features a powerful seventh generation Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, 16GB of DDR4 RAM and an SSD and hard drive combo. While the processor and the memory are more than enough for gaming, the 128GB SSD is arguably too small for modern games which can take up over 50GB of storage space each. The ASUS FX502VM-AS73 also features a 1TB hard drive, however it is a slow 5400rpm drive and installed games on it will be noticeably slower when loading. The key to any good gaming laptop is its dedicated graphics and the ASUS FX502VM-AS73 features a powerful GTX 1060 from NVIDIA. This VR-Ready GPU will easily allow you to play the latest 2017 games on the highest settings, though if you are using a 4K monitor you might want to turn down those settings. However, the ASUS FX502VM-AS73 has been criticized by some users for its subpar battery life and for its slightly odd keyboard layout, though the odd keyboard layout will just take some getting used to if you use the arrow keys for racing games.

Pros

  • Dedicated NVIDIA graphics
  • Powerful Intel i7 CPU
  • Attractive price
  • Great Full-HD display
  • SSD and HDD combo

Cons

  • Battery life
  • Tiny SSD
  • 5400rpm hard drive is slow
  • Odd arrow keys layout
  • TN panel offers narrow viewing angles
  • Poor cooling system

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 3GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]
  • 16GB DDR4 RAM
  • 1000GB 5400 RPM HDD / 128GB SSD
  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 4 hours battery life
  • 4.9 lbs

Summary

The ASUS FX502VM-AS73 offers great gaming hardware for a great price, though the small SSD is not ideal for installing all of your favorite games and the keyboard layout is not ideal for those games that require the arrow keys.

ASUS ROG STRIX GL703VD 17-inch

ASUS ROG STRIX GL703VD 17-inch laptop
ASUS’s new ROG Strix GL703VD DB74 is a entry-level to mid-rastrix-gl703vd-17-inch/?preview=truenge gaming laptop that’s budget and travel friendly thanks to its reasonably lightweight design of 6.7 pounds (light by gaming laptop standards at least). It has an all black exterior and a fairly large orange-backlit ROG logo on the brushed aluminium lid, and it feels solid and sturdy, but while the design is fairly subtle when compared to other aggressive looking gaming laptops, it may still draw some attention when compared to non-gaming ultrabooks. Most have found that it delivers a great 1080p gaming performance thanks to its powerful hardware including the GTX 1050 GPU by Nvidia, the blazing fast Intel i7-7700HQ quad-core processor and 16GB of RAM that combine to easily deliver enough power for videographers and photographers, running demanding editing applications easily. The 1920 x 1080 IPS 17-inch display is said to have some pretty good color representation, but we are sad to see that there is no G-Sync support, which was what made the previous generation ASUS ROG Strix GL502VM-DB71 such an appealing buy. It has a full size island-style keyboard that has great tactile feedback, and it does feature the four-zone RGB Aura backlighting, but some reviewers did notice some keyboard flex. While it may not be per key RBG backlighting, it beats the single red backlighting of the Acer Predator Helios 300 G3-571-77QK 15.6-inch. You get a fair selection of connectivity options, with 4x USB 3.0 ports and a single Type-C USB 3.1 (Gen1) port, along with a mini DisplayPort, HDMI port, and an SD card reader. You will have storage space thanks to ASUS opting for dual storage. You get a fast 256GB SATA SSD that will have your system files and essentials on, and you get an additional 1TB HDD that can store your larger game folders. Notebookcheck’s battery life test, which involves continuously web surfing until the battery drains, showed that it managed 7 hours and 9 minutes before completely draining, which is impressive for a gaming laptop. This is partly due to Optimus, which utilizes the integrated GPU as opposed to the discrete GPU when not gaming.

Pros

  • Solid 1080p gaming
  • Large display
  • Decent battery life for gaming laptop
  • Decent battery life for gaming laptop
  • Appealing price

Cons

  • No G-Sync
  • Runs hot
  • Loud fans

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 4GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]
  • 16GB DDR4 RAM
  • 1000GB 7200 RPM HDD / 256GB SSD
  • 17.3 inch, pixels
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5 hours battery life
  • 6.7 lbs

Summary

The ASUS ROG Strix GL703VD DB74 is a well priced gaming laptop with a sleek and slim form factor, and it drives a highly respectable 1080p gaming experience, but it is disappointing to see that ASUS failed to include G-Sync with this model.

ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB76 15.6-inch

ASUS M580VD-EB76 VivoBook 15.6 laptop
The ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB76 is a rather unassuming gaming laptop. It has a premium look, much like its the ZenBook line, and therefore looks like it could be geared more towards work than gaming. The sleek, stylish ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB76 flexes a powerful Intel Core i7-7700HQ quad-core processor, which is backed by 16GB DDR4 RAM. It has a dedicated Nvidia GTX 1050 GPU that runs most modern day AAA games and easily runs high demand photo and video editing software. It features a matte 1080p FHD screen with 100% sRGB color gamut, but it is a TN-based display, and not IPS, meaning that one’s viewing angles will be average. The battery life is said to last around 4-5 hours, and while ASUS says the VivoBook M580VD-EB76 has an intelligent cooling system, it is reported to run hot during high-load multitasking and gaming sessions. Measuring in at 0.8 X 15 X 10 inches, and with a weight of 5.1 pounds, it weighs close to what the Macbook Pros and the Dell XPS 15 touch weigh, and therefore makes it practical in terms of portability. At the bottom of the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB76 are two speakers that drive out good audio for a laptop, with one user even suggesting that it pushes some decent bass. It features chiclet-style keys and the USB 3.1 Type-C port allows for super fast transfer speeds and will also allow for users to connect a Thunderbolt compatible display. The SSD is fast and has 256GB of storage space, while the slower, 5400RPM mechanical hard drive has 1TB of storage space.

Pros

  • Powerful Intel Core i7-7700HQ quad-core processor
  • Well priced
  • SSD and HDD combo
  • Sleek, stylish design

Cons

  • 5400rpm hard drive is slow
  • Short Battery life
  • Heating issues
  • Mediocre TN Display

MSI GE62 Apache Pro-001 15.6-inch

MSI GE62 Apache Pro-001
Performance and customization are two big things to consider when buying a gaming laptop and the MSI GE62 Apache Pro-219 ticks both those boxes. With its fully customizable color LED backlit keyboard users can set the backlight to their mood and of course the Apache Pro-219 delivers impressive performance for even the latest games. Being able to run most games on high to ultra settings while at a resolution of at least 1080p is a must for laptops of this price range and the Apache more than delivers. As with most gaming laptops, however, the battery life is underwhelming.

Pros

  • Excellent performance
  • Lightweight design
  • Mini DisplayPort
  • Full keyboard with numpad

Cons

  • Excessive bloatware
  • Short battery life

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 970M 3GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]

ASUS ROG Strix GL553VD 15.6-inch

With its Kaby Lake 2.8-GHz Intel Core i7-7700HQ CPU and 16GB of RAM, ASUS ROG Strix GL553VD 15.6-inch laptop packs enough power to ease through your day-to-day tasks. The Full-HD IPS display has been praised by many, and it has wide, 178-degree viewing angles. Some may be disappointed that the screen is not 4K, but 4K screens generally push the price up of a laptop up quite a bit. ASUS have installed a 1TB 7200RPM hard drive, which is ample storage space, but it is slower than a solid state drive, which is becoming more commonplace in this day and age, especially at this price. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 with its 4GB of RAM is a mid-level card that handles most AAA titles reasonably well, but it is not as future proofed as the more powerful GTX 1070 and GTX 1080. The RGB aura keyboard has 4-zone customizable lighting, meaning that you can customize the back lighting of the keyboard to suit your play style. The battery, much like most gaming PCs, is not the best, lasting around 5 hours at most. The USB Type-C allows for quick data transfers and it allows you to connect a Thunderbolt compatible display. The sound quality is mediocre according to most reviewers, with most finding that they sound tinny. Some also noted that the fans can get quite loud when the ASUS ROG Strix GLGL553VD is pushed to perform, and this can be quite annoying. For the price, one would wish that ASUS at least included an SSD or a GTX 1060, but otherwise the ASUS ROG Strix GLGL553VD is a decent gaming laptop.

Pros

  • Powerful Intel Core i7-7700HQ
  • Beautiful FHD display
  • USB Type-C port
  • RGB backlit keyboard
  • GeForce GTX 1050 is decent

Cons

  • No SSD
  • Poor battery life
  • Price
  • Mediocre speakers
  • Loud fans

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 4GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5 hours battery life

ASUS ROG Strix GL502VM-DB71 15.6-inch

ASUS ROG Strix GL502VM-DB71 15.6-inch
The ROG range of gaming laptops from ASUS have always been on the frontline of offering a great gaming experience. The ASUS ROG Strix GL502VM might not be winning the race for the thinnest gaming laptop, but at 4.9 pounds and at just 0.94 inches thick, it is below the category standard. You get the usual aggressive gaming looks that you will find on the higher-end ROG laptops, but ASUS has toned it down just a bit to offer a very sleek laptop. Sporting an Intel Skylake Core i7-6700HQ processor and 16GB of DDR4 2133MHz RAM, the ASUS ROG Strix GL502VM will easily offer lag free performance when it comes to current gaming titles. You can upgrade the RAM to a maximum of 32GB and ASUS have left one slot free to add a second 16GB RAM module. We recommend the G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 2400 (2 x 16G) kit as a replacement for an improved gaming experience. ASUS have also gone with the new 10-series graphics from NVIDIA and features the GeForce GTX 1060 laptop edition. The GTX 1060 offers a huge improvement in performance over its predecessor the GTX 960M. You now get 6GB of GDDR5 video memory and you will be able to play demanding titles such as Battlefield 4, The Division and Fallout 4 on ultra settings. You will however see a massive drop in frame rates with a 4K monitor and a resolution of 3840 x 2160. You get a single 1TB 7200rpm mechanical hard drive, but there is a free M.2 slot for you to add a superfast solid state drive. The Full-HD display offers wide viewing angles thanks to its In-plane switching technology and offers a good 83% sRGB color gamut, which is good news for designers.

Pros

  • Intel Skylake i7 processor
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060
  • USB 3.1 Type-C
  • Thin and light
  • Empty M.2 slot

Cons

  • No SSD as a standard
  • Heats up under load
  • Plastic design
  • Battery life
  • No optical drive
  • ASUS bloatware

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]
  • 16GB DDR4 2133MHz RAM

  • Windows 10 Home

The ASUS ROG GL753VE-DS74 features an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti GPU with 4GB of GDDR5 video memory. The Ti offers up to 30% better graphics performance than the standard GTX 1050 and will allow you to easily play any of the latest AAA gaming titles at 1920 x 1080. You will however notice a drop in frame rates if you connect a 4K monitor or 4K TV to the ASUS ROG GL753VE-DS74 and set your resolution higher in game. Every gamer knows how annoying lag can be, so ASUS have fitted the ASUS ROG GL753VE-DS74 with a Kaby Lake Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor and 16GB of DDR4 2400MHz RAM. This will give you peace of mind while gaming and it will even allow you to run photo editing and video editing applications. The SSD only offers 256GB of storage space which is far too small for users with larger Steam and Origin game collections. There is a 1TB mechanical hard drive too, however it is a slower 5400rpm version. We recommend upgrading the slow mechanical hard drive with either a faster 7200rpm drive or a fast SATA SSD with at least 512GB of storage space. While many other laptops in this price category offer smaller 15.6-inch displays, the ASUS ROG GL753VE-DS74 comes with a 17.3-inch display that offers a far more comfortable working and gaming experience. The IPS-like display offers great viewing angles, vivid colors and great image quality. However, you might want to use a good monitor if you intend on using it as a desktop replacement machine at home. The ASUS ROG GL753VE-DS74 also features a great scissor-switch keyboard and ASUS’s Aura RGB-backlighting system with four controllable lighting zones, giving it the edge over some of its competitors.

Pros

  • Dedicated NVIDIA GPU
  • Kaby Lake processor
  • Good amount of RAM
  • USB 3.1 Type-C

Cons

  • Slow 5400rpm HDD

  • SSD too small for hardcore gamers
