Top Gaming Laptop Under $1000

Acer Predator Helios 300 G3-571-77QK 15.6-inch

Acer Predator Helios 300 G3-571-77QK 15.6-inchAcer are known in the gaming world for their Predator line of gaming hardware, however, most of their Predator laptops have been priced out of reach for many gamers.  The Acer Predator Helios 300 joins the Predator range as a more affordable solution, however, Acer have had to make a few sacrifices in order to offer its attractive price. The first thing that should be noted is that the display is dimmer than some of its counterparts and it doesn’t reproduce as many colors as the higher-end Predator laptops. However, the display is not all bad news, as you do get a Full-HD display panel which uses IPS technology for far better viewing angles and the quality is not terrible for gaming and streaming media. The Acer Predator Helios 300 is powered by a Kaby Lake Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor and is backed up by 16GB of DDR4 RAM. This will easily allow you to play your favorite games and will ensure that you can run even more intensive applications will little to no lag. While many of its competitors offer the GTX 1050 or GTX 1050 Ti, Acer have gone ahead and fitted the Acer Predator Helios 300 with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060. This card offers better performance for AAA gaming titles and is more suited for VR gaming than the two entry-level NVIDIA graphics cards. The 256GB M.2 SSD offers fast boot and game loading speeds, however it is a bit small for modern games. Luckily, the Acer Predator Helios 300 ships with the cradle for a SATA based storage drive and you can easily install a 512GB or 1TB SSD at home. While the Acer Predator Helios 300 runs cool during everyday use, it will run hot while gaming or while you run more intensive applications. While this might put off some users, it is not at all uncommon for laptops in its price category and is not a deal breaker for many users.

Pros

  • Kaby Lake processor
  • GTX 1060
  • M.2 SSD
  • Great performance
  • Easy to upgrade RAM and storage
  • USB Type-C

Cons

  • Runs hot under load
  • Small amount of storage space
  • Only one USB 3.0 port
  • Poor battery life
  • Not the loudest audio
  • Not the brightest display

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 7 hours battery life
  • 5.95 lbs

Summary

The Acer Predator Helios 300 G3-571-77QK is an affordable Acer Predator laptop which even features a more powerful GTX 1060 compared to its competitors GTX 1050 offerings. However, the tiny amount of storage space needs addressing if you own a larger game collection.

Acer Nitro 5 AN515-51-55WL

Acer Nitro 5 AN515-51-55WL laptop

Acer have produced another entry-level gaming laptop that offers gamers great bang for their buck. This solid multimedia machine comes with a quad-core Intel i5-7300HQ processor and 8GB of RAM shoved into a black and red case. Acer have fitted a good quality, matte 1920 x 1080 IPS display, but some noted that although it has good contrast, it can be quite dark. The fast SSD allows for quick load and boot times, and it makes the overall system feel responsive and fast, but the 256GB will used up fairly quickly, so it may be advisable to get another SSD or HDD to increase your space. The Nvidia 1050Ti is a newer card, but it is an entry-card, and it won’t be VR-ready, but it will run modern titles fairly well. Most have noted that the keyboard is comfortable, and the red LED backlighting is a nice touch. The touchpad is responsive and performs well, receiving very little criticism from reviewers. The laptop runs a little hot according to some reviewers, especially when being stressed, and on top of this, the fans can get a little loud. The battery life is good if the Nitro 5 is used economically, lasting around 8.5 hours, but when under heavy load, it drains quite a bit quicker.

Pros

  • Value
  • Admirable performance
  • Fast SSD
  • IPS display
  • Good battery life for gaming laptop

Cons

  • Potentially dark display
  • Entry level Nvidia 1050Ti
  • 256GB of storage space
  • May heat up under heavy load

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 8.5 hours battery life
  • 5.95 lbs

Summary

The Acer Nitro 5 AN515-51-55WL 15.6-inch gaming laptop has an affordable price tag and comes with decent hardware, but it runs hot under a heavy load and the storage space is quite limiting.

Dell Inspiron i5577-7359BLK-PUS 15.6-inch

Dell Inspiron i5577-7359BLK-PUS laptop

With its Intel i7-7700HQ processor and 8GB of RAM backing an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050, you will be get respectable gaming performance out of the Dell Inspiron i5577-7359BLK-PUS for its relatively modest price. On top of this, Dell have thrown in a 128GB SSD alongside a larger (but slower) 1TB HDD for storage purposes. Naturally, some drawbacks are to be expected with a price so low; the TN display is a bummer, as it does make the colors seem a bit washed depending on the angle from which you view the screen. It is fair to say that the 15.6-inch, 1920×1080 matte display is okay at best. The laptop has an attractive black case with red accents which makes the design pleasing overall, but some have noted that it feels quite flimsy, especially around the hinges. Most have found that the battery life lasts around 4 hours 30 minutes, which is alright for a normal notebook and on the longer side for many gaming laptops. Thanks to its powerful hardware, the Dell Inspiron i5577-7359BLK-PUS is also suitable for power users looking for an all-round workstation and will easily run software such as Adobe Creative Suite as well as most basic day to tasks with ease.

Pros

  • Strong performance
  • SSD + HDD combo for speed and storage
  • Backlit keyboard
  • Good 1080p performance

Cons

  • Average screen
  • Poor speaker quality
  • Reports of flimsy feeling hinges
  • Pre-installed Bloatware

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 4.5 hours battery life
  • 5.66 lbs

Lenovo Legion Y520 80WK00FHUS 15.6-inchLenovo Legion Y520 80WK00FHUS 15.6-inch

Not everyone can afford to spend over $1500 on a gaming laptop, this is why many laptop manufacturers have brought out competitive gaming laptops at around $1000. While these might not be as powerful, they will allow you to play the latest games. One of these budget friendly gaming laptops is the Lenovo Legion Y520 80WK00FHUS. It features a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, which offers an almost 10% performance increase over the standard GTX 1050. While you won’t be playing games with 4K resolution and over 100fps, it will allow you to comfortably play the latest titles on high settings with decent frame rates and in 1080p. To cut costs, Lenovo have gone with an Intel i5 processor instead of the widely used i7’s for gaming laptops. However, the seventh generation Intel Core i5-7300HQ processor will easily keep up with current games and will also allow you to easily run more demanding applications. Backing up the processor is 8GB or DDR4 2400MHz RAM, which will allow for lag free gaming under most circumstances. However, if you intend on running Google Chrome and other memory hungry applications, then you might want to consider upgrading to 16GB for peace of mind. The IPS display offers average colors, however for its price it is not a deal breaker. It also offers a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels which is great for gaming and watching your favorite HD movies and series. To further enjoy your media, the Lenovo Legion Y520 features legendary Harman certified speakers which offer impressive sound. Because of the size of many games, the small 256GB M.2 SSD is not suitable for those with larger Steam and Origin game collections. Luckily, you can upgrade the Lenovo Legion Y520 with a second SATA based SSD or you can look at a more cost effective 7200rpm mechanical storage drive.

Pros

  • Price
  • Dedicated NVIDIA
  • USB Type-C
  • Good audio
  • Kaby Lake CPU
  • Great keyboard

Cons

  • Small SSD
  • Lenovo bloatware
  • Red color is not for everyone
  • Trackpad is a bit awkward and tacky

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 3 hours battery life

Summary

The Lenovo Legion Y520 80WK00FHUS offers a decent gaming experience for its attractive price. However the small solid state drive will fill up very quickly and we recommend adding a second storage drive for all of your storage needs.

Acer Aspire VX5-591G-75RM 15.6-inchAcer Aspire VX5-591G-75RM 15.6-inch

The Acer Aspire VX5-591G-75RM bares a few design similarities to Acer’s top of the range Predator gaming range, while still coming in at a more affordable price. The Acer Aspire VX5-591G-75RM is the most powerful of the VX5 range and sports a 10-series NVIDIA graphics card for a great gaming experience. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti features 4GB of dedicated GDDR5 video memory and will easily run titles such as Overwatch, Battlefield 1 and GTA V. The GTX 1050 Ti offers better performance than the standard GTX 1050, which will allow you to run your games on higher settings and with better frame rates. While you do not get a G-SYNC display for this price, you do still get a great IPS display which offers rich colors and great viewing angles for you to enjoy your favorite games or media. Powering the Acer Aspire VX5-591G-75RM is a Kaby Lake Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor with 16GB of DDR4 RAM, which will easily offer lag free gaming and more than enough power for more intensive applications. The downside of the Acer Aspire VX5-591G-75RM is that it only features a single M.2 solid state drive with only 256GB of storage space. This is far too small for most gamers as a lot of AAA gaming titles require over 50GB of space to be installed. While there is space to install a 2.5-inch drive, you will first have to purchase an upgrade kit from Acer as this range does not come with the required bracket, cables or screws. The other more costly option would be to replace the existing M.2 SSD with a larger 512GB or 1TB module.

Pros

  • Dedicated NVIDIA graphics
  • Kaby Lake processor
  • USB 3.1 Type-C
  • Aggressive looks
  • Price

Cons

  • Small SSD
  • HDD upgrade kit sold separately
  • No optical drive
  • Small battery

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 6 hours battery life
  • 5.51 lbs

Summary

The Acer Aspire VX5-591G-75RM offers a decent gaming experience for its price, however the 256GB SSD is slightly too small for most gamers and adding a second drive will require an upgrade kit from Acer.

MSI GL62M 7REX-1896US

MSI GL62M 7REX-1896US 15.6-inch laptop

MSI’s GL62M 7REX-1896US is a gaming laptop that affords most on a budget a decent overall mid-range gaming experience. While the NVIDIA GTX 1050Ti is modern and up to date, it is a mid-tier graphics card and does not support VR. It will play most modern titles on medium to high settings on Full-HD, but 4K gaming is unfortunately not an option. Under the hood there is an Intel i7-770HQ, which is plenty fast with more than enough processing power, and the accompanying 8GB of DDR4 RAM will allow you to multitask effectively. If 8GB of RAM is not enough, you can upgrade to 32GB. MSI have employed a thinner design compared to the MSI GL62M-line. It is more portable and stylish, and made from matte black plastic. The battery life is terrible, which is not surprising with gaming laptops, clocking in around 4 hours for most. The GL62M 7REX-1896US has 1920 x 1080 IPS matte display that most found to be crisp with great viewing angles. The dual hard drive setup, which includes one SSD and a mechanical HDD ensures fast boot up speeds and plenty of storage space. The mechanical hard drive is, however, only 5400RPM, meaning it’s slow and depending where you boot your programs or games from, it may make the experience feel rather sluggish and slow. It includes USB Type-C, two USB 3.0 Ports and a mini-display and HDMI port which supports 4K. MSI have incorporated the usual red backlit SteelSeries keyboard design which is comfortable and the touchpad is said to responsive.

Pros

  • Crisp display
  • Thin and portable
  • Fast CPU
  • SSD + HDD combination

Cons

  • Middle-of-the-road GPU
  • Poor battery life
  • 5400RPM HDD

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 8.5 hours battery life
  • 5.3 lbs

Summary

While the MSI GL62M 7REX-1896US has a fast CPU and SSD, and enough RAM to have an overall responsive and snappy laptop, the GPU is comparatively fairly average for gaming purposes.

Gaming Laptop Under $1000 – Honorable Mentions

ASUS FX502VM-AH51 15.6-inchASUS FX502VM-AH51 15.6-inch

Finding a gaming laptop with an NVIDIA GTX 1060 for under $1000 is like winning the lottery, however, ASUS have released a winning formula with the ASUS FX502VM-AH51. This laptop offers up a powerful GTX 1060 for under $1000. This price category is usually flooded with GTX 1050 and even GTX 1050 Ti GPUs, and while they can handle modern games, they lack the power of the GTX 1060. The GTX 1060 even offers support for VR gaming. While keeping costs down, ASUS have gone for an i5 processor which could struggle with VR games in the long run. The 16GB of DDR4 RAM and Intel Core i5-6300HQ will easily handle any of the current games and you will have loads of space to install them on the 1TB hard drive. While it does feature a 7200rpm hard drive, it still doesn’t match the speeds offered by SSDs. Luckily there is a free M.2 slot to install a superfast SSD without having to replace the 2.5-inch hard drive. The powerful hardware does have its downside though, it will mean that the ASUS FX502VM-AH51 will run hot while gaming. The laptops thinner form doesn’t help either as thicker laptops offer far better airflow for cooling. Some users have also mentioned that the trackpad has much to be desired, though most gamers will use a good gaming mouse. At the end of the day, these minor issues are something that we can easily look past due to the powerful GPU and its great price.

Pros

  • NVIDIA GTX 1060
  • Good amount of RAM
  • Full-HD display
  • Great price

Cons

  • Heats up while gaming
  • No SSD
  • Trackpad
  • TN display
  • No USB 3.1 or Type-C

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5.75 hours battery life
  • 4.9 lbs

Summary

The ASUS FX502VM-AH51 is a great gaming laptop with a powerful GTX 1060 GPU, however expect it to run hot while gaming due to its thin form and powerful hardware.

Lenovo-Ideapad-Y700-15.6-InchLenovo Ideapad Y700 80NV0029US 15.6-inch

Lenovo are known for their almost bulletproof business laptops, but Lenovo also have a range of powerful gaming laptops. Sports aggressive gaming looks and a design that closely resembles a stealth fighter, the Ideapad Y700 is as much a gaming pedigree laptop as the gaming laptops that we know and love. Equipped with a powerful Skylake Intel i7-6700HQ processer and 8GB of RAM, the Y700 will cope with demanding apps with ease. But we do recommend upgrading to 16GB or more for the rendering of media. No gaming laptop would be complete without a dedicated graphics card. The Y700 sports an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M, which will be able to run most modern gaming titles on medium to high graphics while still offering decent frame rates. The 256GB solid state drive offers lightning fast game loading speeds, but the 256GB of storage space is a limiting factor due to the size of modern games. The Full-HD IPS display offers vibrant colors, wide viewing angles and the anti-glare technology reduces the glare to almost zero. While it does not feature a QHD+ or UHD display, the Y700’s display does offer a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. The cooling system is not as effective as other gaming machines and does leave the keyboard hot while gaming. Overall the Ideapad Y700 is a great gaming laptop for users who are after a powerful gaming laptop at a more affordable price.

Pros

  • Solid state drive
  • In-panel switching display
  • Great audio
  • Price
  • Aggressive gaming design

Cons

  • Runs hot when gaming
  • Spongy keyboard
  • Last generation ports
  • Limited storage space for modern games

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5 hours battery life
  • 5.72 lbs

Summary

The Lenovo Ideapad Y700 15.6-Inch features fast performance backed by great hardware along with superb sound wrapped in a solid build. However, it is bulky with an SSD that is pretty small when you consider the size of apps and games today.

ASUS ZX53VW-AH58 15.6-inchASUS ZX53VW-AH58 15.6-inch

If an ASUS ROG laptop is just slightly out of your price range, then you will be pleased to know that ASUS have a few cheaper options that still manage to offer great gaming experiences. The ASUS ZX53VW-AH58 even features a superfast M.2 SSD which will give you a slight edge while loading into multiplayer games and will allow you to boot into Windows in seconds. With 512GB of storage space, you get enough space to install some of the larger games on the market while still leaving some room to store all of your media files. With a Skylake-based Intel Core i5-6300HQ processor and 8GB of RAM, you will have no issues with everyday tasks and running most AAA games. However, you might want to look at upgrading the RAM to 16GB as the installed 8GB would be the first culprit if the ASUS ZX53VW-AH58 started feeling sluggish. The graphics are delivered by the dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M with 4GB of video memory. While it is not as powerful as the newer GTX 1060, this card does help to bring down the price of this gaming laptop. However, the GTX 960M will still run quite a few of the latest gaming titles on ultra settings with acceptable frame rates. For you to enjoy your favorite games, you get a matte Full-HD display which offers rich colors and good viewing angles for gaming and watching 1080p videos. One of the biggest complaints has been that the trackpad is subpar and you might experience a few misclicks while using it. However, most gamers will use a good gaming mouse while playing games or even just surfing the web.

Pros

  • Large M.2 SSD
  • Dedicated NVIDIA graphics
  • Matte Full-HD display
  • 0.8-inch thin metallic case
  • Skylake-based processor
  • Backlit keyboard

Cons

  • Sub-par trackpad
  • Not for hardcore gamers
  • Fn keys can’t be swapped
  • Battery life

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 4 hours battery life
  • 5.51 lbs

Summary

The ASUS ZX53VW-AH58 offers great specs for the gamer on a budget or for someone new to the world of gaming. However, the trackpad is sub-par and will frustrate some users.

MSI GL62M 7RE-407 15.6-inchMSI GL62M 7RE-407 15.6-inch

While most of MSI’s gaming laptops sell for over $1000, the MSI GL62M 7RE-407 is an affordable option for those looking for a good gaming laptop at a lower price. While most of its competitors and even the MSI GL62M 7RD-058 feature the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 GPU, the MSI GL62M 7RE-407 ships with the more powerful GTX 1050 Ti. The GTX 1050 Ti offers higher frame rates and smoother performance, which offers a better gaming experiencing overall. Its Intel Core i5-7300HQ processor might offer three quarters of the performance of the popular Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, but it will still allow you to run any modern game on the market at the moment. You will only really notice the difference while pushing your settings, multitasking or while using CPU intensive applications. However, this does allow MSI to bring down the price of the GL62M 7RE-407. Another noticeable feature that is missing from the MSI GL62M 7RE-407 is its lack of a backlit keyboard, this once again brings down the price and is not a deal breaker. While some of the sub $1000 gaming laptops still cling on to the DDR4 2133MHz RAM modules, MSI have gone with the slightly higher frequency 2400MHz RAM which helps to increase the laptop’s overall performance. You can increase the RAM to a maximum of 32GB and we recommend looking at the G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 2x 8GB kit as a good upgrade for the MSI GL62M 7RE-407. When it comes to modern games, the space required to install these titles has shot up dramatically over the last few years. This means that while you do get a superfast M.2 SSD, its 256GB of storage space will fill up extremely quickly with games such as GTA V or Battlefield 1. Luckily there is space to install a SATA-based storage drive. It has to be mentioned that while you can upgrade the MSI GL62M 7RE-407, it is not as easy as some of MSI’s more premium laptops and requires some time and patience to pry off the bottom panel to get to the components.

Pros

  • Price
  • Kaby Lake CPU
  • GTX 1050 Ti GPU
  • Vivid display

Cons

  • No optical drive
  • Battery life
  • Not the easiest to upgrade
  • No backlit keyboard

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5.3 lbs

Summary

The MSI GL62M 7RE-407 offers great performance for its sub $1000 price tag, however the small SSD will fill up fairly quickly and you should consider a second SSD or 7200rpm HDD to extend its storage.

Dell Inspiron i7559-2512BLK 15.6-inchDell Inspiron i7559-2512BLK 15.6-inch

Dell is known for creating some of the best budget and business machines on the market. But Dell also know a thing or two about gaming and the Dell Inspiron i7559-2512BLK is a powerful gaming laptop for gamers on a budget. Even though the Inspiron i7559-2512BLK doesn’t have the aggressive gaming looks that we expect with gaming rigs, the Inspiron i7559-2512BLK is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. While many other manufacturers are offering machines with ultra-voltage processors, the Dell Inspiron i7559-2512BLK sports the same powerful Intel Core i7-6700HQ as many of the more expensive gaming laptops. The processor is backed by 8GB of RAM which can easily be upgraded as Dell has left one slot free on the board. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M allows for modern gaming titles to be run on medium to high graphics and is backed by 4GB of video memory to allow it to render more complex graphics. While many gaming laptops are offering QHD+ and UHD displays at a similar price point, the Inspiron i7559-2512BLK still features a Full-HD display to reduce costs. But the Full-HD display has anti-glare technology that almost reduces glare to zero and games still look great at 1920×1080. To further save costs, Dell has rather fitted a Hybrid hard drive instead of an SSD which is a vast improvement over the 5400rpm hard drives. The 8GB of cache allows for faster boot speeds and game loading times, but users have no control over which files are stored on the SSD section of the Hybrid drive. The 1TB of storage space offers ample space for games and multimedia, but users can replace the Hybrid drive in favor of a much faster solid state drive to increase the laptop’s performance.

Pros

  • Skylake CPU
  • NVIDIA GTX 960M
  • Price
  • Anti-glare display
  • Sleek design

Cons

  • No SSD
  • No optical drive
  • No control over the SSHD cache

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5 hours battery life
  • 5.67 lbs

Summary

The Dell Inspiron i7559-2512BLK is a budget friendly gaming laptop that features powerful hardware in a sleek and unassuming design. While the SSHD is an improvement over 5400 rpm drives, we would recommend upgrading to an SSD.

Razer Blade Stealth RZ09-01962E20-R3U1 12.5-inchRazer Blade Stealth RZ09-01962E20-R3U1 12.5-inch

While all of Razer’s Stealth laptops have featured Intel i7 processors, this version now sports an Intel i5 processor to bring down the costs and to make the Stealth slightly more affordable. It sports a seventh generation Kaby Lake Intel i5-7200U processor and 8GB of LPDDR3 RAM, which gives the Razer Blade Stealth RZ09-01962E20-R3U1 enough power for all of your day-to-day tasks. Both the Skylake and Kaby Lake processors support DDR4 RAM, however it seems that the motherboard used in the Stealth does not support DDR4 RAM, which does come in handy as the low-voltage RAM does help to extend the battery life. Featuring Intel’s latest HD Graphics 620 graphics, the Razer Blade Stealth RZ09-01962E20-R3U1 will allow you to play a host of older AAA gaming titles on higher settings. However it is underpowered for newer titles such as Battlefield 1, For Honor and COD: Infinity Warfare. However Razer has a solution on hand, while developing the original Blade Stealth ultrabook, the designers created the Razer Core, an external GPU or more commonly known as a graphics amplifier. Connecting via super fast Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C), the Razer Core allows users to run any AMD or NVIDIA desktop card and brings a rich gaming experience to the Stealth ultrabook. We recommend either the new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, GTX 1060 or the AMD Radeon RX 470. But this makes the gaming experience less mobile due to the size of the Razer Core and a design oversight means that the Stealth cannot be charged while connected to the Core, as the USB Type-C serves as both the charging port and as a data transfer port. The biggest weakness of the Razer Blade Stealth RZ09-01962E20-R3U1 is the fact that it has a tiny SSD. With only 128GB of storage space, you will either have to look at swapping out the SSD for a larger one or using an external hard drive to store your games and media.

Pros

  • Superfast SSD
  • Intel Kaby Lake processor
  • QHD display
  • Price

Cons

  • Tiny SSD
  • USB Type-C handles both charging and data transfers
  • Integrated graphics
  • No Ethernet or optical drive
  • 12.5-inch display

Specs

  • 12.5 inch, 2560 x 1440 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5.5 hours battery life
  • 2.84 lbs

Summary

The Razer Blade Stealth RZ09-01962E20-R3U1 is an affordable Razer Stealth laptop that now sports the latest Kaby Lake Intel i5 processor. However the lower price does have one major drawback and that is the tiny 128GB SSD.
