Best Gaming Laptop Under $1000

Acer Predator Helios 300 G3-571-77QK 15.6-inch

Acer Predator Helios 300 G3-571-77QK 15.6-inch
Acer are known in the gaming world for their Predator line of gaming hardware, however, most of their Predator laptops have been priced out of reach for many gamers.  The Acer Predator Helios 300 joins the Predator range as a more affordable solution, however, Acer have had to make a few sacrifices in order to offer its attractive price. The first thing that should be noted is that the display is dimmer than some of its counterparts and it doesn’t reproduce as many colors as the higher-end Predator laptops. However, the display is not all bad news, as you do get a Full-HD display panel which uses IPS technology for far better viewing angles and the quality is not terrible for gaming and streaming media. The Acer Predator Helios 300 is powered by a Kaby Lake Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor and is backed up by 16GB of DDR4 RAM. This will easily allow you to play your favorite games and will ensure that you can run even more intensive applications will little to no lag. While many of its competitors offer the GTX 1050 or GTX 1050 Ti, Acer have gone ahead and fitted the Acer Predator Helios 300 with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060. This card offers better performance for AAA gaming titles and is more suited for VR gaming than the two entry-level NVIDIA graphics cards. The 256GB M.2 SSD offers fast boot and game loading speeds, however it is a bit small for modern games. Luckily, the Acer Predator Helios 300 ships with the cradle for a SATA based storage drive and you can easily install a 512GB or 1TB SSD at home. While the Acer Predator Helios 300 runs cool during everyday use, it will run hot while gaming or while you run more intensive applications. While this might put off some users, it is not at all uncommon for laptops in its price category and is not a deal breaker for many users.

Pros

  • Excellent Kaby Lake processor
  • Powerful gaming performance
  • Lightning quick M.2 SSD
  • Great performance
  • Easy to upgrade RAM and storage
  • Features USB Type-C port

Cons

  • Runs hot under load
  • Small amount of storage space
  • Only one USB 3.0 port
  • Poor battery life
  • Not the loudest audio
  • Not the brightest display

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 4GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]
  • 16GB DDR4 2400MHz RAM
  • 256GB SSD
  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 7 hours battery life
  • 5.95 lbs

Summary

The Acer Predator Helios 300 G3-571-77QK is an affordable Acer Predator laptop which even features a more powerful GTX 1060 compared to its competitors' GTX 1050 offerings. However, the tiny amount of storage space needs addressing if you own a larger game collection.

Best Gaming Laptop Under $800

ASUS FX73VE-WH71 17.3-inch

ASUS FX73VE-WH71 17.3-inch laptop

ASUS’s FX73VE-WH71 laptop is a great lower mid-tier gaming laptop that is aimed at cash strapped gamers who can’t afford to splash out on the high end laptops that cost an arm and a leg. It features a larger display than our top seller, the Acer Predator Helios 300 G3-571-77QK 15.6-inch, sporting a 17-inch Full-HD LED IPS display that offers crispness and a decent color representation, and the viewing angles are far better when compared to TN displays, such as the one on the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB76 15.6-inch. It has a sturdy build and at 0.9-inches thin, it is sleek. It has an anti-ghosting, red-backlit keyboard that has a good amount of key travel, and most noted that it is ergonomically designed. The red-backlighting wasn’t fancied by everyone, and it received mixed reviews, but it can be turned off Packed inside you will find all the necessary components to deliver a steady and reliable Full-HD gaming experience. The 7th Generation Intel i7-7700HQ is a strong performing quad-core processor, and the 8GB of RAM is more than enough for easy multitasking efficiently. The most attractive aspect of this laptop is the inclusion of the Nvidia GTX 1050Ti over a standard 1050, which is quite rare at this price point. It will allow you to run most games comfortably on high settings in 1080p, but maxing games such as the Witcher 3 or GTA V is still slightly out of reach. Under load, the fan can become loud as it works to keep things cool, but heat production is apparently still noticeable. The HDD offers plenty of storage space, but slow the overall system down to an extent due to it being an older 7200RPM. A noticeable complaint by Amazon customers was the quality control of the product, with some receiving defective units, while others were very unimpressed by the poor packaging they received it in, noting damaged products that had to be returned. It may be worth insuring your laptop delivery.

Pros

  • Large display perfect for gaming
  • Large storage for multimedia
  • Ergonomic, red backlit keyboard
  • Perfect GPU for Full-HD gaming
  • Great price

Cons

  • Loud fan
  • Heats up
  • Quality control
  • Slow hard drive

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti 4GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]
  • 8GB DDR4 RAM
  • 1000GB 7200 RPM HDD
  • 17.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 6.5 hours battery life
  • 6.6 lbs

Summary

The ASUS FX73VE-WH71 17.3-inch heats up under load and the fans do become quite loud, but the sleek chassis houses some pretty good components that brings a steady and reliable 1080p gaming performance.

Best Gaming Laptops Under $1000 – Runners-Up

Dell Inspiron i7577-5241BLK-PUS 15.6-inch

Dell Inspiron i7577-5241BLK-PUS laptop
The Dell Inspiron i7577-5241BLK-PUS, priced at under $1000, is one of the best deals we have seen for a laptop that comes with an NVIDIA GTX 1060 Max-Q, and steals our new top spot for our most recommended gaming laptop. If you are not aware of the Max-Q technology that NVIDIA is using, then be sure to check out this article by Laptop Mag. Essentially, it is NVIDIA’s solution for bringing GPUs that usually run in desktops to laptops. There’s usually a slight drop in performance, but they still run efficiently and deliver great gaming performances. It does come with the awesome GPU for the price, and it has been partnered up with the Intel i5-7300HQ and 8GB of DDR RAM, which is enough to run modern games easily. The 15.6-inch, 1920 x 1080 matte IPS display ensures that glare is kept to a minimum, but it has been noted that the display lacks color, which is a common drawback of matte displays. The case has a stable and subtle design, masking the raw power hidden inside, and some have noted that its looks are suitable for the office and that it won’t attract glares and stares from co-workers. The battery life when surfing the web is also admirable, with some finding that it can last up to 7 hours, but this will be significantly reduced when gaming. It comes with a 128GB SSD for all your essential system programs, and another 1TB 5400 RPM HDD, that needless to say, is slow, but it does provide you with more than enough storage space for game folders. There is an option for a 256GB SSD instead of the additional 1TB slower HDD that costs around $30 more, but that you’d have to sacrifice storage space for speed (see here). Sadly, the keyboard is not as great as one would hope, and the key travel is not that great. It has a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C port and it supports Thunderbolt 3, allowing high speed data transfers. This laptop is clearly geared toward productivity users as well. Under load, the laptop is able to run relatively quiet and cool. Its fast, long-range 802.11ac Wi-Fi that has SmartByte network priority optimization will ensure that you maintain a super fast connection to your net and you won’t suffer slow downs that could affect your online gaming experience.

Pros

  • NVIDIA GTX 1060 Max-Q
  • Exceptional value
  • Great gaming performance
  • Solid construction
  • Subtle looks
  • Reliable cooling
  • Decent battery life when not gaming

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Poor keyboard feedback
  • Average display color representation

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]
  • 8GB DDR4 RAM
  • 1000GB 5400 RPM HDD / 128GB SSD
  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 8.5 hours battery life
  • 6.28 lbs

Summary

The Dell Inspiron i7577-5241BLK-PUS is one of the few laptops we have seen in this price range that offers an NVIDIA GTX 1060. It offers exceptional value for the money and an excellent overall gaming experience.

MSI GL62M 7REX-1896US

MSI GL62M 7REX-1896US 15.6-inch laptop
MSI’s GL62M 7REX-1896US is a gaming laptop that affords most on a budget a decent overall mid-range gaming experience. While the NVIDIA GTX 1050Ti is modern and up to date, it is a mid-tier graphics card and it is listed as a minimum requirement for Ocullus Rift. It will play most modern titles on medium to high settings on Full-HD, but 4K gaming is unfortunately not an option. Under the hood there is an Intel i7-770HQ, which is plenty fast with more than enough processing power, and the accompanying 8GB of DDR4 RAM will allow you to multitask effectively. If 8GB of RAM is not enough, you can upgrade to 32GB. MSI have employed a thinner design compared to the MSI GL62M-line. It is more portable and stylish, and made from matte black plastic. The battery life is terrible, which is not surprising with gaming laptops, clocking in around 4 hours for most. The GL62M 7REX-1896US has 1920 x 1080 IPS matte display that most found to be crisp with great viewing angles. The dual hard drive setup, which includes one SSD and a mechanical HDD ensures fast boot up speeds and plenty of storage space. The mechanical hard drive is, however, only 5400RPM, meaning it’s slow and depending where you boot your programs or games from, it may make the experience feel rather sluggish and slow. It includes USB Type-C, two USB 3.0 Ports and a mini-display and HDMI port which supports 4K. MSI have incorporated the usual red backlit SteelSeries keyboard design which is comfortable and the touchpad is said to responsive.

Pros

  • Crisp display
  • Thin and portable
  • Fast CPU
  • SSD + HDD combination

Cons

  • Middle-of-the-road GPU
  • Poor battery life
  • 5400RPM HDD

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti 4GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]
  • 8GB RAM
  • 1000GB 5400 RPM HDD / 128GB SSD
  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 8.5 hours battery life
  • 5.3 lbs

Summary

While the MSI GL62M 7REX-1896US has a fast CPU and SSD, and enough RAM to have an overall responsive and snappy laptop, the GPU is comparatively fairly average for gaming purposes.

Lenovo Legion Y520 80WK00FHUS 15.6-inch

Lenovo Legion Y520 80WK00FHUS 15.6-inch
Not everyone can afford to spend over $1500 on a gaming laptop, this is why many laptop manufacturers have brought out competitive gaming laptops at around $1000. While these might not be as powerful, they will allow you to play the latest games. One of these budget friendly gaming laptops is the Lenovo Legion Y520 80WK00FHUS. It features a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, which offers an almost 10% performance increase over the standard GTX 1050. While you won’t be playing games with 4K resolution and over 100fps, it will allow you to comfortably play the latest titles on high settings with decent frame rates and in 1080p. To cut costs, Lenovo have gone with an Intel i5 processor instead of the widely used i7’s for gaming laptops. However, the seventh generation Intel Core i5-7300HQ processor will easily keep up with current games and will also allow you to easily run more demanding applications. Backing up the processor is 8GB or DDR4 2400MHz RAM, which will allow for lag free gaming under most circumstances. However, if you intend on running Google Chrome and other memory hungry applications, then you might want to consider upgrading to 16GB for peace of mind. The IPS display offers average colors, however for its price it is not a deal breaker. It also offers a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels which is great for gaming and watching your favorite HD movies and series. To further enjoy your media, the Lenovo Legion Y520 features legendary Harman certified speakers which offer impressive sound. Because of the size of many games, the small 256GB M.2 SSD is not suitable for those with larger Steam and Origin game collections. Luckily, you can upgrade the Lenovo Legion Y520 with a second SATA based SSD or you can look at a more cost effective 7200rpm mechanical storage drive.

Pros

  • Price
  • Dedicated NVIDIA
  • USB Type-C
  • Good audio
  • Kaby Lake CPU
  • Great keyboard

Cons

  • Small SSD
  • Lenovo bloatware
  • Red color is not for everyone
  • Trackpad is a bit awkward and tacky

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 4GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]
  • 8GB DDR4 2400MHz RAM
  • 256GB SSD
  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 3 hours battery life

Summary

The Lenovo Legion Y520 80WK00FHUS offers a decent gaming experience for its attractive price. However the small solid state drive will fill up very quickly and we recommend adding a second storage drive for all of your storage needs.

MSI GL72M 7RDX-800 17.3-inch

MSI GL72M 7RDX-800 17.3-inch laptop
The MSI GL72M 7RX-800 comes with a large 17.3-inch display, a whole 1.7 inches larger than their GL62M range of gaming laptops that come with 15.6-inch displays, making it the only laptop we have in this guide that boasts such a large display. Its case is made from matte black plastic that’s a fingerprint magnet, but most have found that it feels durable and solid in hand, leaving a good first impression with most. The SteelSeries keyboard is ergonomically designed, offering good key travel and the familiar red backlighting, It has a range of connectivity options, including USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and USB Type-C, which sadly does not support Thunderbolt. Its HDMI port does support 4K resolution monitors, but only at a 30 Hz frequency. The display has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and it was well received by most reviewers, but the TN panel is a bit disappointing. The IPS displays are superior in their color representation as well as their viewing angles, but they can push the price up a bit. The MSI GL62M 7RDX-1408 does come with an IPS display that is better overall, but you’d have to settle for a smaller display as mentioned above. The included GTX 1050 does offer a reliable performance regardless, and running games at 1920 x 1080 will see you comfortably clocking 50-60 FPS for most games, but some, such as The Witcher 3, will require you to lower the settings quite a bit. The Intel i7-7700HQ CPU and 8GB of RAM will comfortably run most things that you throw at it, and the 128GB SSD M.2 SSD will make your system act fast. MSI have included a large 1TB 5400RPM for those massive game folders that easily exceed 50GB we so often see today. Running demanding applications or hardcore gaming also sees the system running cool thanks to the Cooler Booster 4 technology. This also leads to the fans running quietly compared to those on systems that heat up underload. Notebookcheck have found that the battery life is not that good, with their web browsing test lasting around 3.5 hours, and only around 40 minutes under load, with the brightness set to max.

Pros

  • Large display
  • Great price
  • Fast performance
  • Decent gaming performance
  • Good cooling
  • Plenty of storage
  • SSD + HDD

Cons

  • Screen has narrow viewing angles
  • The HDD is slow
  • Poor battery life
  • No Thunderbolt support

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 2GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]
  • 8GB DDR4 RAM
  • 1000GB 5400 RPM HDD / 128GB SSD
  • 17.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 4 hours battery life
  • 5.95 lbs

Summary

At under $900, the MSI GL72M 7RDX-800 17.3-inch will provide you with good gaming performance and it will cruise through day to day tasks with absolute ease, despite its shortcomings with its display.

Dell Inspiron i5577-7359BLK-PUS 15.6-inch

Dell Inspiron i5577-7359BLK-PUS laptop
With its Intel i7-7700HQ processor and 8GB of RAM backing an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050, you will be get respectable gaming performance out of the Dell Inspiron i5577-7359BLK-PUS for its relatively modest price. On top of this, Dell have thrown in a 128GB SSD alongside a larger (but slower) 1TB HDD for storage purposes. Naturally, some drawbacks are to be expected with a price so low; the TN display is a bummer, as it does make the colors seem a bit washed depending on the angle from which you view the screen. It is fair to say that the 15.6-inch, 1920×1080 matte display is okay at best. The laptop has an attractive black case with red accents which makes the design pleasing overall, but some have noted that it feels quite flimsy, especially around the hinges. Most have found that the battery life lasts around 4 hours 30 minutes, which is alright for a normal notebook and on the longer side for many gaming laptops. Thanks to its powerful hardware, the Dell Inspiron i5577-7359BLK-PUS is also suitable for power users looking for an all-round workstation and will easily run software such as Adobe Creative Suite as well as most basic day to tasks with ease.

Pros

  • Strong performance
  • SSD + HDD combo for speed and storage
  • Backlit keyboard
  • Good 1080p performance

Cons

  • Average screen
  • Poor speaker quality
  • Reports of flimsy feeling hinges
  • Pre-installed Bloatware

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 4.5 hours battery life
  • 5.66 lbs

ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB76 15.6-inch

ASUS M580VD-EB76 VivoBook 15.6 laptop
The ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB76 is a rather unassuming gaming laptop. It has a premium look, much like the ZenBook line, and therefore looks like it could be geared more towards work than gaming. The sleek, stylish ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB76 flexes a powerful Intel Core i7-7700HQ quad-core processor, which is backed by 16GB DDR4 RAM. It has a dedicated Nvidia GTX 1050 GPU that runs most modern day AAA games and easily runs high demand photo and video editing software. It features a matte 1080p FHD screen with 100% sRGB color gamut, but it is a TN-based display, and not IPS, meaning that one’s viewing angles will be average. The battery life is said to last around 4-5 hours, and while ASUS says the VivoBook M580VD-EB76 has an intelligent cooling system, it is reported to run hot during high-load multitasking and gaming sessions. Measuring in at 0.8 X 15 X 10 inches, and with a weight of 5.1 pounds, it weighs close to what the Macbook Pros and the Dell XPS 15 touch weigh, and therefore makes it practical in terms of portability. At the bottom of the ASUS VivoBook M580VD-EB76 are two speakers that drive out good audio for a laptop, with one user even suggesting that it pushes some decent bass. It features chiclet-style keys and the USB 3.1 Type-C port allows for super fast transfer speeds and will also allow for users to connect a Thunderbolt compatible display. The SSD is fast and has 256GB of storage space, while the slower, 5400RPM mechanical hard drive has 1TB of storage space.

Pros

  • Powerful Intel Core i7-7700HQ quad-core processor
  • Well priced
  • SSD and HDD combo
  • Sleek, stylish design

Cons

  • 5400rpm hard drive is slow
  • Short Battery life
  • Heating issues
  • Mediocre TN Display

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 4GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]

Best Gaming Laptop Under $800 – Runner-Up

Dell Inspiron 15 i7567 Gaming Edition

Dell Inspiron 15 i7567 Gaming Edition
If you are on a lower budget and you are willing to settle for a machine that drives a very reliable 1080p gaming experience, then be sure to check out the Dell Inspiron 15 i7567 Gaming Edition. It comes in a red and black case designed for gamers, but the colors and overall look is not as aggressive as some of the competitors, and thanks to its long battery life of around 11 hours under moderate use, it is suitable for college. It comes with a fast Intel i5 -7300HQ 2.50 GHz processor that can push speeds of up to 3.50 GHz, 8GB of RAM, and the entry-level NVIDIA GTX 1050. The Dell Inspiron i5577-7359BLK-PUS 15.6-inch, another firm favorite of ours from Dell, comes with an even faster Intel Core i7-7700HQ Quad Core CPU and is only slightly pricier, but it does come with a faster CPU and you’ll get an SSD and HDD combo. The Dell Inspiron 15 i7567 comes with a single 1TB 5400 RPM hard drive, which is slow in comparison to an SSD. You will have more than enough space for game files, however, especially since the modern day AA titles take up a monstrous amount of space. While the display received some positive remarks from Amazon.com customers, reviewers from tech sites such TechRadar and LaptopMag noted that the TN display on this model is dull and colors are not that well represented. TN displays, which are inferior to IPS displays, which have much better viewing angles and the colors don’t look washed out. The island-style keyboard is said to have a decent amount of travel and the backlighting is said to be just right, but the trackpad is said to be poor overall. Any serious gamer would be using a mouse for gaming purposes, however, so this should not be much of a concern for most. It has a decent selection of ports, including three USB 3.0 ports, and it the front-facing speakers and bottom mounted subwoofer push out some solid sound.

Pros

  • Good audio quality
  • Excellent value
  • Strong performance
  • Reliable 1080p gaming experience
  • Sturdy
  • Excellent battery life for gaming laptop

Cons

  • Dull, dim display
  • Slow hard drive
  • Poor touchpad

  • 7.5 hours battery life

MSI GL62M 7RDX-1408 15.6-inch

MSI GL62M 7RDX-1408 15.6-inch laptop
MSI’s GL62M 7RDX-1408 manages to pack some serious power in a rather unassuming case. This inexpensive gaming laptop has the same case design as the MSI GL72M 7RX-800, but the main difference between the two is that the MSI GL72M 7RX-800 has a larger display, but it is a TN display, while the GL62M 7RDX-1408 has an up to date IPS display. That being said, many liked the Full-HD display and its rich colors and wide viewing angles. The comfortable SteelSeries keyboard with its red backlighting is comfortable and it has great key travel, and the mouse pad is spacious and responsive. Its audio quality is said to be tinny, with many finding other laptops have offered better sound, but laptops in general lack quality audio when compared to gaming headphones or a proper speaker system. It comes with sufficient ports, including a a single USB 2.0 port, two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 3.1 USB Type-C port that supports USB 3.1 Gen1, but some were fairly disappointed that there was no USB 3.1 Gen2 support. Its fast, 128GB SSD M.2 solid state drive ensures that your system remains responsive, and you’d only have your essential programs saved on here since it is quite small, while the larger 1TB slower mechanical hard drive is ideal for multimedia storage, including games, movies and music. The MSI GL62M 7RDX-1408 comes with a powerful 7th Generation Intel i7-7700HQ and enough RAM for comfortable multitasking, and combined with NVIDIA’s GTX 1050, current games will run effortlessly on medium to high settings in Full-HD at 50 to 60 frames per second. Much like the MSI GL72M 7RDX-800, the Cooler Boost 4 cooling technology keeps the temperatures and down, so you won’t have to worry about temperature related throttling. Like any gaming laptop, we are not surprised to see that the battery life lasts 4 hours when web browsing, and only around 40 minutes under load. While this is disappointing, all the hardware packed into this machine isn’t necessarily efficient.

Pros

  • Fast CPU
  • SSD + HDD combination

Cons

  • Middle-of-the-road GPU

Acer Nitro 5 AN515-51-55WL

Acer Nitro 5 AN515-51-55WL laptop
Acer have produced another entry-level gaming laptop that offers gamers great bang for their buck. This solid multimedia machine comes with a quad-core Intel i5-7300HQ processor and 8GB of RAM in a black and red case. Acer have fitted a good quality, matte 1920 x 1080 IPS display, but some noted that although it has good contrast, it can be quite dark. Although the 8GB of RAM is minimal, upgrading to 16GB won’t cost much and will help increase your laptops performance by quite a bit. The fast SSD allows for quick load and boot times, and it makes the overall system feel responsive and fast, but the 256GB will used up fairly quickly, so it may be advisable to get another SSD or HDD to increase your space. The Nvidia 1050Ti is a newer card, but it is an entry-card, and it won’t be VR-ready, but it will run modern titles fairly well. Most have noted that the keyboard is comfortable, and the red LED backlighting is a nice touch. The touchpad is responsive and performs well, receiving very little criticism from reviewers. The laptop runs a little hot according to some reviewers, especially when being stressed, and on top of this, the fans can get a little loud. The battery life is good if the Nitro 5 is used economically, lasting around 8.5 hours, but when under heavy load, it drains quite a bit quicker.

Pros

  • Value
  • Admirable performance
  • Fast SSD
  • IPS display
  • Good battery life for gaming laptop

Cons

  • Potentially dark display
  • Entry level Nvidia 1050Ti
  • 256GB of storage space
  • May heat up under heavy load

Specs

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti 4GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]
  • 8GB DDR4 RAM
  • 256GB SSD
  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 8.5 hours battery life
  • 5.95 lbs

Summary

The Acer Nitro 5 AN515-51-55WL 15.6-inch gaming laptop has an affordable price tag and comes with decent hardware, but it runs hot under a heavy load and the storage space is quite limiting.
