Acer Aspire VX5-591G-75RM 15.6-inchAcer Aspire VX5-591G-75RM 15.6-inch

The Acer Aspire VX5-591G-75RM bares a few design similarities to Acer’s top of the range Predator gaming range, while still coming in at a more affordable price. The Acer Aspire VX5-591G-75RM is the most powerful of the VX5 range and sports a 10-series NVIDIA graphics card for a great gaming experience. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti features 4GB of dedicated GDDR5 video memory and will easily run titles such as Overwatch, Battlefield 1 and GTA V. The GTX 1050 Ti offers better performance than the standard GTX 1050, which will allow you to run your games on higher settings and with better frame rates. While you do not get a G-SYNC display for this price, you do still get a great IPS display which offers rich colors and great viewing angles for you to enjoy your favorite games or media. Powering the Acer Aspire VX5-591G-75RM is a Kaby Lake Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor with 16GB of DDR4 RAM, which will easily offer lag free gaming and more than enough power for more intensive applications. The downside of the Acer Aspire VX5-591G-75RM is that it only features a single M.2 solid state drive with only 256GB of storage space. This is far too small for most gamers as a lot of AAA gaming titles require over 50GB of space to be installed. While there is space to install a 2.5-inch drive, you will first have to purchase an upgrade kit from Acer as this range does not come with the required bracket, cables or screws. The other more costly option would be to replace the existing M.2 SSD with a larger 512GB or 1TB module.

  • Kaby Lake processor
  • USB 3.1 Type-C
  • Aggressive looks
  • Price

Cons

  • Small SSD
  • HDD upgrade kit sold separately
  • No optical drive
  • Small battery

Summary

The Acer Aspire VX5-591G-75RM offers a decent gaming experience for its price, however the 256GB SSD is slightly too small for most gamers and adding a second drive will require an upgrade kit from Acer.

MSI GL62M 7RE-407 15.6-inchMSI GL62M 7RE-407 15.6-inch

While most of MSI’s gaming laptops sell for over $1000, the MSI GL62M 7RE-407 is an affordable option for those looking for a good gaming laptop at a lower price. While most of its competitors and even the MSI GL62M 7RD-058 feature the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 GPU, the MSI GL62M 7RE-407 ships with the more powerful GTX 1050 Ti. The GTX 1050 Ti offers higher frame rates and smoother performance, which offers a better gaming experiencing overall. Its Intel Core i5-7300HQ processor might offer three quarters of the performance of the popular Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, but it will still allow you to run any modern game on the market at the moment. You will only really notice the difference while pushing your settings, multitasking or while using CPU intensive applications. However, this does allow MSI to bring down the price of the GL62M 7RE-407. Another noticeable feature that is missing from the MSI GL62M 7RE-407 is its lack of a backlit keyboard, this once again brings down the price and is not a deal breaker. While some of the sub $1000 gaming laptops still cling on to the DDR4 2133MHz RAM modules, MSI have gone with the slightly higher frequency 2400MHz RAM which helps to increase the laptop’s overall performance. You can increase the RAM to a maximum of 32GB and we recommend looking at the G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 2x 8GB kit as a good upgrade for the MSI GL62M 7RE-407. When it comes to modern games, the space required to install these titles has shot up dramatically over the last few years. This means that while you do get a superfast M.2 SSD, its 256GB of storage space will fill up extremely quickly with games such as GTA V or Battlefield 1. Luckily there is space to install a SATA-based storage drive. It has to be mentioned that while you can upgrade the MSI GL62M 7RE-407, it is not as easy as some of MSI’s more premium laptops and requires some time and patience to pry off the bottom panel to get to the components.

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5.3 lbs

Pros

  • Price
  • Kaby Lake CPU
  • GTX 1050 Ti GPU
  • Vivid display

Cons

  • No optical drive
  • Battery life
  • Not the easiest to upgrade
  • No backlit keyboard

Summary

The MSI GL62M 7RE-407 offers great performance for its sub $1000 price tag, however the small SSD will fill up fairly quickly and you should consider a second SSD or 7200rpm HDD to extend its storage.

ASUS K501UW-AB78 15.6-inchASUS K501UW-AB78 15.6-inch

While many gaming laptops feature aggressive stylings and are usually quite bulky, the ASUS K501UW-AB78 is quite different. Featuring a sleek aluminum design, the ASUS K501UW-AB78 is thin and light for a gaming machine, making it great for gamers after a portable solution. Sporting a 6th generation Intel Core i7-6500U processor and 8GB of RAM, the ASUS K501UW-AB78 will make light work of your daily tasks. But for more intensive apps and for better gaming performance and we recommend upgrading the RAM to at least 16GB. The dual cooling fans keep the ASUS K501UW-AB78 cool when under load, but users can expect to hear the fans slightly when pushing the laptops hardware. No gaming laptop would be complete without a dedicated graphics card. The ASUS K501UW-AB78 features an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M, which will run Fallout 4 and Overwatch on ultra settings, but more intensive games will have to be run on medium and high settings to maintain good frame rates. One feature that is missing from the ASUS K501UW-AB78 is the addition of USB 3.1 Type-C. This would help to future proof the laptop as users could easily connect an External GPU dock to run more powerful desktop graphics cards. While some of its competitors are still offering smaller 256GB SSD’s, the ASUS K501UW-AB78 comes standard with a 512GB SSD for double the storage space. While the Full-HD display offers rich colors and great viewing angles, it is slightly small for gaming. But users will easily be able to connect a monitor or TV via the HDMI port for a much more pleasurable gaming experience.

Cons

  • No IPS display
  • No optical drive

Summary

The ASUS K501UW-AB78 is a sleek gaming laptop that offers great hardware for gamers who are constantly on the go. But the lack of a USB 3.1 Type-C port means that it is not as future proof as some of its competitors.

ASUS ZX53VW-AH58 15.6-inchASUS ZX53VW-AH58 15.6-inch

If an ASUS ROG laptop is just slightly out of your price range, then you will be pleased to know that ASUS have a few cheaper options that still manage to offer great gaming experiences. The ASUS ZX53VW-AH58 even features a superfast M.2 SSD which will give you a slight edge while loading into multiplayer games and will allow you to boot into Windows in seconds. With 512GB of storage space, you get enough space to install some of the larger games on the market while still leaving some room to store all of your media files. With a Skylake-based Intel Core i5-6300HQ processor and 8GB of RAM, you will have no issues with everyday tasks and running most AAA games. However, you might want to look at upgrading the RAM to 16GB as the installed 8GB would be the first culprit if the ASUS ZX53VW-AH58 started feeling sluggish. The graphics are delivered by the dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M with 4GB of video memory. While it is not as powerful as the newer GTX 1060, this card does help to bring down the price of this gaming laptop. However, the GTX 960M will still run quite a few of the latest gaming titles on ultra settings with acceptable frame rates. For you to enjoy your favorite games, you get a matte Full-HD display which offers rich colors and good viewing angles for gaming and watching 1080p videos. One of the biggest complaints has been that the trackpad is subpar and you might experience a few misclicks while using it. However, most gamers will use a good gaming mouse while playing games or even just surfing the web.

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 4 hours battery life
  • 5.51 lbs

Pros

  • Large M.2 SSD
  • Dedicated NVIDIA graphics
  • Matte Full-HD display
  • 0.8-inch thin metallic case
  • Skylake-based processor
  • Backlit keyboard

Cons

  • Sub-par trackpad
  • Not for hardcore gamers
  • Fn keys can’t be swapped
  • Battery life

Summary

The ASUS ZX53VW-AH58 offers great specs for the gamer on a budget or for someone new to the world of gaming. However, the trackpad is sub-par and will frustrate some users.

Gaming Laptops Under $1000 – More Options

Lenovo Legion Y520 80WK00FHUS 15.6-inchLenovo Legion Y520 80WK00FHUS 15.6-inch

Not everyone can afford to spend over $1500 on a gaming laptop, this is why many laptop manufacturers have brought out competitive gaming laptops at around $1000. While these might not be as powerful, they will allow you to play the latest games. One of these budget friendly gaming laptops is the Lenovo Legion Y520 80WK00FHUS. It features a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, which offers an almost 10% performance increase over the standard GTX 1050. While you won’t be playing games with 4K resolution and over 100fps, it will allow you to comfortably play the latest titles on high settings with decent frame rates and in 1080p. To cut costs, Lenovo have gone with an Intel i5 processor instead of the widely used i7’s for gaming laptops. However, the seventh generation Intel Core i5-7300HQ processor will easily keep up with current games and will also allow you to easily run more demanding applications. Backing up the processor is 8GB or DDR4 2400MHz RAM, which will allow for lag free gaming under most circumstances. However, if you intend on running Google Chrome and other memory hungry applications, then you might want to consider upgrading to 16GB for peace of mind. The IPS display offers average colors, however for its price it is not a deal breaker. It also offers a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels which is great for gaming and watching your favorite HD movies and series. To further enjoy your media, the Lenovo Legion Y520 features legendary Harman certified speakers which offer impressive sound. Because of the size of many games, the small 256GB M.2 SSD is not suitable for those with larger Steam and Origin game collections. Luckily, you can upgrade the Lenovo Legion Y520 with a second SATA based SSD or you can look at a more cost effective 7200rpm mechanical storage drive.

  • Good audio
  • Kaby Lake CPU
  • Great keyboard

Cons

  • Small SSD
  • Lenovo bloatware
  • Red color is not for everyone
  • Trackpad is a bit awkward and tacky

Summary

The Lenovo Legion Y520 80WK00FHUS offers a decent gaming experience for its attractive price. However the small solid state drive will fill up very quickly and we recommend adding a second storage drive for all of your storage needs.

Dell Inspiron i7559-2512BLK 15.6-inchDell Inspiron i7559-2512BLK 15.6-inch

Dell is known for creating some of the best budget and business machines on the market. But Dell also know a thing or two about gaming and the Dell Inspiron i7559-2512BLK is a powerful gaming laptop for gamers on a budget. Even though the Inspiron i7559-2512BLK doesn’t have the aggressive gaming looks that we expect with gaming rigs, the Inspiron i7559-2512BLK is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. While many other manufacturers are offering machines with ultra-voltage processors, the Dell Inspiron i7559-2512BLK sports the same powerful Intel Core i7-6700HQ as many of the more expensive gaming laptops. The processor is backed by 8GB of RAM which can easily be upgraded as Dell has left one slot free on the board. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M allows for modern gaming titles to be run on medium to high graphics and is backed by 4GB of video memory to allow it to render more complex graphics. While many gaming laptops are offering QHD+ and UHD displays at a similar price point, the Inspiron i7559-2512BLK still features a Full-HD display to reduce costs. But the Full-HD display has anti-glare technology that almost reduces glare to zero and games still look great at 1920×1080. To further save costs, Dell has rather fitted a Hybrid hard drive instead of an SSD which is a vast improvement over the 5400rpm hard drives. The 8GB of cache allows for faster boot speeds and game loading times, but users have no control over which files are stored on the SSD section of the Hybrid drive. The 1TB of storage space offers ample space for games and multimedia, but users can replace the Hybrid drive in favor of a much faster solid state drive to increase the laptop’s performance.

Pros

  • Skylake CPU
  • NVIDIA GTX 960M
  • Price
  • Anti-glare display
  • Sleek design

Cons

  • No SSD
  • No optical drive
  • No control over the SSHD cache

Summary

The Dell Inspiron i7559-2512BLK is a budget friendly gaming laptop that features powerful hardware in a sleek and unassuming design. While the SSHD is an improvement over 5400 rpm drives, we would recommend upgrading to an SSD.

Razer Blade Stealth RZ09-01962E20-R3U1 12.5-inchRazer Blade Stealth RZ09-01962E20-R3U1 12.5-inch

While all of Razer’s Stealth laptops have featured Intel i7 processors, this version now sports an Intel i5 processor to bring down the costs and to make the Stealth slightly more affordable. It sports a seventh generation Kaby Lake Intel i5-7200U processor and 8GB of LPDDR3 RAM, which gives the Razer Blade Stealth RZ09-01962E20-R3U1 enough power for all of your day-to-day tasks. Both the Skylake and Kaby Lake processors support DDR4 RAM, however it seems that the motherboard used in the Stealth does not support DDR4 RAM, which does come in handy as the low-voltage RAM does help to extend the battery life. Featuring Intel’s latest HD Graphics 620 graphics, the Razer Blade Stealth RZ09-01962E20-R3U1 will allow you to play a host of older AAA gaming titles on higher settings. However it is underpowered for newer titles such as Battlefield 1, For Honor and COD: Infinity Warfare. However Razer has a solution on hand, while developing the original Blade Stealth ultrabook, the designers created the Razer Core, an external GPU or more commonly known as a graphics amplifier. Connecting via super fast Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C), the Razer Core allows users to run any AMD or NVIDIA desktop card and brings a rich gaming experience to the Stealth ultrabook. We recommend either the new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, GTX 1060 or the AMD Radeon RX 470. But this makes the gaming experience less mobile due to the size of the Razer Core and a design oversight means that the Stealth cannot be charged while connected to the Core, as the USB Type-C serves as both the charging port and as a data transfer port. The biggest weakness of the Razer Blade Stealth RZ09-01962E20-R3U1 is the fact that it has a tiny SSD. With only 128GB of storage space, you will either have to look at swapping out the SSD for a larger one or using an external hard drive to store your games and media.

  • 12.5 inch, 2560 x 1440 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5.5 hours battery life
  • 2.84 lbs

Pros

  • Superfast SSD
  • Intel Kaby Lake processor
  • QHD display
  • Price

Cons

  • Tiny SSD
  • USB Type-C handles both charging and data transfers
  • Integrated graphics
  • No Ethernet or optical drive
  • 12.5-inch display

Summary

The Razer Blade Stealth RZ09-01962E20-R3U1 is an affordable Razer Stealth laptop that now sports the latest Kaby Lake Intel i5 processor. However the lower price does have one major drawback and that is the tiny 128GB SSD.

MSI GL62M 7RD-058 15.6-inchMSI GL62M 7RD-058 15.6-inch

Joining the MSI GL62 6QF-628 in our guide, the new MSI GL62M 7RD-058 comes packed with more features and far superior hardware for the gamer on a tighter budget. It now features an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 which was released at the end of 2016. This graphics card features 2GB of dedicated GDDR5 video memory and will offer a far superior gaming experience than the older GTX 960M that its predecessor featured. Its base clock speed is over 300MHz higher than the GTX 960M and the newer Pascal architecture makes a huge difference if you intend to embrace the next generation of gaming technology. While many of MSI’s gaming laptops are heavy and bulky, the MSI GL62M 7RD-058 measures in at just a bit over an inch and weighs about the same as an all-purpose 15.6-inch laptop. While you still get a SteelSeries keyboard, unfortunately this one is not backlit and this is a bit of a shame when it comes to a great MSI gaming laptop. Powering the new MSI GL62M 7RD-058 is a Kaby Lake-based Intel Core i5-7300HQ processor and 8GB of DDR4 2400MHz RAM. While you only get 8GB of RAM, the higher frequency RAM offers improved performance compared to the 2133MHz that many of its competitors offer. You can easily increase the RAM to a maximum of 32GB and we recommend looking at the G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 2x 8GB kit as a good upgrade. While the 7200rpm hard drive offers ample storage space, the fast M.2 SSD is tiny and you should consider replacing it for a larger SSD. Like most MSI gaming laptops you get a great quality Full-HD display that offers vivid colors and good viewing angles. You can use a 4K gaming monitor thanks to the laptop’s HDMI and Mini DisplayPort, but you will need an adaptor as most monitors only feature full size DisplayPorts.

Cons

Lenovo-Ideapad-Y700-15.6-InchLenovo Ideapad Y700 80NV0029US 15.6-inch

Lenovo are known for their almost bulletproof business laptops, but Lenovo also have a range of powerful gaming laptops. Sports aggressive gaming looks and a design that closely resembles a stealth fighter, the Ideapad Y700 is as much a gaming pedigree laptop as the gaming laptops that we know and love. Equipped with a powerful Skylake Intel i7-6700HQ processer and 8GB of RAM, the Y700 will cope with demanding apps with ease. But we do recommend upgrading to 16GB or more for the rendering of media. No gaming laptop would be complete without a dedicated graphics card. The Y700 sports an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M, which will be able to run most modern gaming titles on medium to high graphics while still offering decent frame rates. The 256GB solid state drive offers lightning fast game loading speeds, but the 256GB of storage space is a limiting factor due to the size of modern games. The Full-HD IPS display offers vibrant colors, wide viewing angles and the anti-glare technology reduces the glare to almost zero. While it does not feature a QHD+ or UHD display, the Y700’s display does offer a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. The cooling system is not as effective as other gaming machines and does leave the keyboard hot while gaming. Overall the Ideapad Y700 is a great gaming laptop for users who are after a powerful gaming laptop at a more affordable price.

  • Aggressive gaming design

Cons

  • Runs hot when gaming
  • Spongy keyboard
  • Last generation ports
  • Limited storage space for modern games

Summary

The Lenovo Ideapad Y700 15.6-Inch features fast performance backed by great hardware along with superb sound wrapped in a solid build. However, it is bulky with an SSD that is pretty small when you consider the size of apps and games today.

Acer Aspire VX5-591G-5652 15.6-inchAcer Aspire VX5-591G-5652 15.6-inch

Bridging the gap between the high-end Acer Predator and the famous Acer Nitro range, the new VX will give you more than you bargained for. While the more expensive Acer Aspire VX5-591G-75RM features an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, the Acer Aspire VX5-591G-5652 comes standard with the GTX 1050 which offers around 20% less performance. However, this version of the GTX 1050 features 4GB of GDDR5 video memory where some manufactures such as HP offer the GTX 1050 with only 2GB of video memory. The GTX 1050 will allow you to run titles such as Overwatch on ultra settings and will even run the popular Battlefield 1 title on ultra with decent frame rates. You can turn down the settings slightly to increase your frame rates if you prefer higher frame rates to better looking graphics. Powering the Acer Aspire VX5-591G-5652 is a seventh generation Core i5-7300HQ processor from the new Kaby Lake architecture and backing it is 8GB of DDR4 2133MHz RAM which is more than enough for most tasks and for avid gamers. The RAM modules can be upgraded and we recommend purchasing a 16GB kit if you intend on using more memory intensive applications. The biggest drawback of the VX range is that all of the laptops only ship with a 256GB M.2 solid state drive which is too small for most gamers. While there is space for a second 2.5-inch mechanical hard drive or another SSD, you will need to purchase the kit separately as the laptop does not ship with the required bracket, screws or power or SATA cables.

Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-57D4 15.6-inchAcer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-57D4 15.6-inch

Although priced slightly higher than $500, the Aspire E 15 E5-575G-57D4 has earned our top pick in the budget gaming category thanks to its dedicated NVIDIA GeForce 940MX graphics card which offers more than twice the performance of competing laptops with only integrated graphics units. The Aspire E 15  will run titles such as Overwatch, Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2 on low to medium settings with graphics performance more than double than competing integrated graphics based laptops below. The E 15 offers a max resolution of  1920×1080, although this will need to be set to 1366 x 768 to retain a frame rate of over 30fps when playing more demanding games. The NVIDIA GeForce 940MX offers slightly better performance than a 940M card and, unlike some of its competitors, the Aspire E 15 E5-575G-57D4 features faster GDDR5 video memory instead of GDDR3. Acer have also fitted the Aspire E 15 E5-575G-57D4 with the latest generation Intel Core i5-7200U processor, which is powerful enough to handle more hardware intensive apps and games. While it features a superfast solid state drive, storage space is slightly too small for modern games which can take up over 40GB of storage space once installed. You might want to consider upgrading the size of your SSD or purchasing a 7200rpm external hard drive for more storage space. We are also impressed with the Full-HD display which offers good image quality and vivid colors for gaming or streaming your favorite series. Acer claims that the Aspire E 15 E5-575G-57D4 will give you 12 hours of battery life off of a single charge, however this would be under ideal conditions and not while gaming or while using hardware intensive applications. Despite this fact, we are still very impressed with the battery life that it offers as most laptops in this price range will barely offer you 4 hours of run time.

ASUS R516UX-RH71 15.6-inchASUS R516UX-RH71 15.6-inch

While most 15.6-inch laptops weigh in at over 5 pounds, the ASUS R516UX-RH71 weighs just 4.4 pounds and is a great choice for users on the go. The Full-HD display offers great colors for web browsing and for video streaming, but the angles are not as good as those on laptops with IPS display panels. Powering the ASUS R516UX-RH71 is a 6th generation Intel Core i7-6500U processor and 8GB of DDR3L RAM and the RAM can be upgraded to a maximum of 16GB if you want to improve its performance. But the installed 8GB will cope with more hardware intensive apps such as Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. The 1TB of storage space offers plenty of space to store all of your files, but it is a slower 5400rpm mechanical hard drive. We recommend upgrading it to at least a 7200rpm drive and if your budget allows for it, a solid state drive for best performance. To ensure that you can play the latest gaming titles, ASUS have gone with an entry level NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M with 2GB of dedicated video memory. The GTX 950M will allow you to play your favorite games on low to medium settings, while still achieving good frame rates. Titles such as Battlefield 4, FIFA 2016, Overwatch and Diablo III will run on high and ultra settings at 1920 x 1080. The battery life is rather average and web browsing will see 4-5 hours off of a single charge, but you will see a dramatic drop in battery life while gaming.

  • None IPS display
  • No optical drive

Summary

The ASUS R516UX-RH71 is a light 15.6-inch gaming laptop with a dedicated GTX 950M graphics card, but the entry level graphics card will mean it is more suited for casual gamers.

ASUS X555UB-NS71 15.6-inchASUS X555UB-NS71 15.6-inch

Don’t let the lack of aggressive gaming looks deceive you, under the elegant shell there is a gaming laptop for that offers decent hardware for its price. The ASUS X555UB-NS71 is powered by an Intel Core i7-6500U processor and 8GB of DDR4 RAM, which when combined will make light work of your daily tasks. While the 8GB of RAM will cope perfectly fine with most day-to-day tasks it can be upgraded for better performance. But the downside is that the ASUS X555UB-NS71 only has one RAM slot and can only accept a maximum of 12GB of RAM. While some of its competitors still offer 5400rpm hard drives, the ASUS X555UB-NS71 comes equipped with a 1TB 7200rpm drive for increased performance. While it is not as fast as a solid state drive, it does offer better performance. To ensure that games will run with decent frame rates, the ASUS X555UB-NS71 features an NVIDIA GeForce 940M graphics card with 2GB of GDDR3 video memory. While it is an entry level card, users can run games like Battlefield 4 and Overwatch on medium settings. But more graphics intense games will need to be run on the lowest of settings for smooth game play. Despite running an a low voltage CPU, the ASUS X555UB-NS71’s battery life doesn’t fare much better than some of the high-end gaming behemoths and users can expect well under 5 hours when gaming.

Lenovo Ideapad 700-15ISK 80RU00FEUS 15.6-inchLenovo Ideapad 700-15ISK 80RU00FEUS 15.6-inch

Lenovo have a dedicated gaming range of high-end gaming laptops, but both the Y700 and Y900 ranges are usually quite pricey for the budget conscious gamer. This is where the Ideapad 700 series comes into play. Designed to be a multimedia powerhouse laptop, the Lenovo Ideapad 700-15ISK 80RU00FEUS will allow you to play a host of AAA gaming titles thanks to its dedicated NVIDIA graphics card. The GeForce GTX 950M is an entry-level GTX graphics card, but with 4GB GDDR3 video memory of it will still allow you to play games on medium settings. A few AAA games such as Overwatch, Dota 2, CS: GO and Diablo III will run on ultra settings and with a resolution of 1920 x 1080. Everyday tasks will run lag free thanks to the Skylake-based Intel Core i5-6300U processor and 12GB of DDR4 2133MHz RAM. However the Core i5-6300U has a benchmark score half that of the more powerful i7-6700HQ processor, which might struggle with more intensive apps and true lag free gaming in the future. The Ideapad 700-15ISK 80RU00FEUS features a super fast solid state drive which will allow you to boot into Windows in seconds and it will give you the edge when it comes to online gaming. The only downside of the SSD is that it only offers 256GB of storage space, which will fill up quickly due to the size of newer games and Full-HD media files. Luckily you will be able to install a 2.5-inch SATA hard drive to increase the laptop’s storage space.

Gaming Laptops Over $1000

If you are looking at something with a bit more firepower, checkout our top below or head over to our high end gaming laptops guide for more top gaming beasts.

Acer Predator Helios 300 G3-571-77QK 15.6-inchAcer Predator Helios 300 G3-571-77QK 15.6-inch

Acer are known in the gaming world for their Predator line of gaming hardware, however, most of their Predator laptops have been priced out of reach for many gamers. This is where Acer have stepped in and taken note of the current trend of gaming laptops at around the $1000 mark. The Acer Predator Helios 300 joins the Predator range as a more affordable solution, however, Acer have had to make a few sacrifices in order to offer its attractive price. The first thing that should be noted is that the display is dimmer than some of its counterparts and it doesn’t reproduce as many colors as the higher-end Predator laptops. However, the display is not all bad news, as you do get a Full-HD display panel which uses IPS technology for far better viewing angles and the quality is not terrible for gaming and streaming media. You can always connect the Acer Predator Helios 300 to a monitor if you need a wider coverage of the sRGB color spectrum for work or college assignments. The Acer Predator Helios 300 is powered by a Kaby Lake Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor and is backed up by 16GB of DDR4 RAM. This will easily allow you to play your favorite games and will ensure that you can run even more intensive applications will little to no lag. While many of its competitors offer the GTX 1050 or GTX 1050 Ti, Acer have gone ahead and fitted the Acer Predator Helios 300 with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060. This card offers better performance for AAA gaming titles and is more suited for VR gaming than the two entry-level NVIDIA graphics cards. The 256GB M.2 SSD offers fast boot and game loading speeds, however it is a bit small for modern games. Titles such as GTA V and Mass Effect: Andromeda take up over 40GB each for their game install files. Luckily, the Acer Predator Helios 300 ships with the cradle for a SATA based storage drive and you can easily install a 512GB or 1TB SSD at home. If the SSDs are out of your price bracket, then you can also consider a good 7200rpm SATA storage drive to increase the laptop’s storage. However, this will mean losing the fast gaming loading advantage that SSDs provide. While the Acer Predator Helios 300 runs cool during everyday use, it will run hot while gaming or while you run more intensive applications. While this might put off some users, it is not at all uncommon for laptops in its price category and is not a deal breaker in our eyes.

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 7 hours battery life
  • 5.95 lbs

Pros

  • Kaby Lake processor
  • GTX 1060
  • M.2 SSD
  • Great performance
  • Easy to upgrade RAM and storage
  • USB Type-C

Cons

  • Runs hot under load
  • Small amount of storage space
  • Only one USB 3.0 port
  • Poor battery life
  • Not the loudest audio
  • Not the brightest display

Summary

The Acer Predator Helios 300 G3-571-77QK is an affordable Acer Predator laptop which even features a more powerful GTX 1060 compared to its competitors GTX 1050 offerings. However, the tiny amount of storage space needs addressing if you own a larger game collection.

ASUS ROG Strix GL502VM-DB71 15.6-inchASUS ROG Strix GL502VM-DB71 15.6-inch

The ROG range of gaming laptops from ASUS have always been on the frontline of offering a great gaming experience. The ASUS ROG Strix GL502VM might not be winning the race for the thinnest gaming laptop, but at 4.9 pounds and at just 0.94 inches thick, it is below the category standard. You get the usual aggressive gaming looks that you will find on the higher-end ROG laptops, but ASUS has toned it down just a bit to offer a very sleek laptop. Sporting an Intel Skylake Core i7-6700HQ processor and 16GB of DDR4 2133MHz RAM, the ASUS ROG Strix GL502VM will easily offer lag free performance when it comes to current gaming titles. You can upgrade the RAM to a maximum of 32GB and ASUS have left one slot free to add a second 16GB RAM module. We recommend the G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 2400 (2 x 16G) kit as a replacement for an improved gaming experience. ASUS have also gone with the new 10-series graphics from NVIDIA and features the GeForce GTX 1060 laptop edition. The GTX 1060 offers a huge improvement in performance over its predecessor the GTX 960M. You now get 6GB of GDDR5 video memory and you will be able to play demanding titles such as Battlefield 4, The Division and Fallout 4 on ultra settings. You will however see a massive drop in frame rates with a 4K monitor and a resolution of 3840 x 2160. You get a single 1TB 7200rpm mechanical hard drive, but there is a free M.2 slot for you to add a superfast solid state drive. The Full-HD display offers wide viewing angles thanks to its In-plane switching technology and offers a good 83% sRGB color gamut, which is good news for designers.

ASUS ROG GL753VE-DS74 17.3-inchASUS ROG GL753VE-DS74 17.3-inch

The ASUS Republic Of Gamers range of laptops are loved across the globe for their great performance when it comes to running the best AAA gaming titles. The ASUS ROG GL753VE-DS74 features an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti GPU with 4GB of GDDR5 video memory. The Ti offers up to 30% better graphics performance than the standard GTX 1050 and will allow you to easily play any of the latest AAA gaming titles at 1920 x 1080. You will however notice a drop in frame rates if you connect a 4K monitor or 4K TV to the ASUS ROG GL753VE-DS74 and set your resolution higher in game. Every gamer knows how annoying lag can be, so ASUS have fitted the ASUS ROG GL753VE-DS74 with a Kaby Lake Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor and 16GB of DDR4 2400MHz RAM. This will give you peace of mind while gaming and it will even allow you to run photo editing and video editing applications. The SSD only offers 256GB of storage space which is far too small for users with larger Steam and Origin game collections. There is a 1TB mechanical hard drive too, however it is a slower 5400rpm version. We recommend upgrading the slow mechanical hard drive with either a faster 7200rpm drive or a fast SATA SSD with at least 512GB of storage space. While many other laptops in this price category offer smaller 15.6-inch displays, the ASUS ROG GL753VE-DS74 comes with a 17.3-inch display that offers a far more comfortable working and gaming experience. The IPS-like display offers great viewing angles, vivid colors and great image quality. However, you might want to use a good monitor if you intend on using it as a desktop replacement machine at home. The ASUS ROG GL753VE-DS74 also features a great scissor-switch keyboard and ASUS’s Aura RGB-backlighting system with four controllable lighting zones, giving it the edge over some of its competitors.

Lenovo Ideapad 700 80RU00D7US 15.6-inchLenovo Ideapad 700 80RU00D7US 15.6-inch

Lenovo are known for their IBM legacy and for their outstanding business laptops. But they also have a few gaming laptops up their sleeve. One of these laptops is the Lenovo Ideapad 700 80RU00D7US. Sporting the same Skylake i7-6700HQ processor as many high-end gaming laptops and 16GB of DDR4 RAM, the Lenovo Ideapad 700 80RU00D7US will easily cope with more intensive tasks and will offer lag free gaming. To back up its gaming pedigree, it comes with an NVIDIA GTX 950M with 4GB of video memory. While it’s not the most powerful GPU on the market, it will still run some of our favorite games on high and ultra settings. But you can expect that future games will run on lower settings. While many laptops in its price category only feature a mechanical hard drive, the Lenovo Ideapad 700 80RU00D7US comes with both a 128GB solid state drive and a 1TB 5400rpm hard drive. You will have to be selective with what games you install on your SSD as newer games have dramatically increased in size. Games such as Battlefield 4 Premium will take up half of your SSD’s storage. The Full-HD IPS display offers great viewing angles and is quite bright with vivid colors. If you are used to a budget laptop display, then this 1920 x 1080 display will be a massive step up and will make gaming that much more enjoyable. But like many gaming laptops, you will have to endure less than average battery life while gaming, expect between one and two hours off of a full charge.
