ASUS Chromebook C202SA-YS02 11.6-inch

ASUS Chromebook C202SA-YS02 11.6-inch
If you are looking for a strong and sturdy Chromebook that can handle the abuses of the classroom, then the ASUS Chromebook C202SA-YS02 is well worth considering. It has been specially designed with nano-molding technology to ensure that it is tough as nails and the rubber bumpers help to protect this Chromebook from impact in unforeseen accidents. It has even been tested by ASAS to endure a 3.9 foot drop. ASUS have also given the Chromebook C202SA-YS02 a spill-resistant keyboard to ensure that this Chromebook will still function in the event of an unforeseen spillage while it is being used. The 180-degree hinged display allows for easier viewing while in group discussions and gives the ASUS Chromebook C202SA-YS02 a bit more flexibility when relaxing with your feet up on the sofa. Powering the ASUS Chromebook C202SA-YS02 is an Intel Celeron N3060 processor and 4GB of RAM, which combined are more than powerful enough for most Chrome OS tasks. While the standard Microsoft Office cannot be installed on Chrome OS, you will be able to use Google Docs, QuickOffice and Microsoft Office Online for all of your word processing needs. The 16GB of storage will allow for a handful of applications and documents to be stored on the ASUS Chromebook C202SA-YS02, however, it has been designed to be used in conjunction with Google’s Drive cloud storage. You get 100GB of cloud storage space for 2 years from Google, thereafter it will cost $1.99 a month to keep the same amount of storage. If you would prefer an offline solution, then we recommend purchasing a 128GB MicroSD card and installing it into the MicroSD slot for a more permanent storage solution.

ASUS L402WA-EH21 14-inch

ASUS L402WA-EH21 14-inch laptop
With its dimensions of 13.3 x 9.3 x 0.9 inches, and a weight of 3.6 pounds, the ASUS L402WA-EH21 is one of the most portable laptops in this guide, and it is the perfect travel companion thanks to its lightweight design and battery life of around 10 to 11 hours. It has an all-plastic design that feels somewhat flimsy, but at this price point we are not expecting a premium aluminium case that we usually see with higher end laptops. The ASUS L402WA-EH21 features a 14-inch, 1366 x 768 display that is on the lower-end in terms of quality, but it is definitely not an eyesore according to users who were able to enjoy videos, pictures and do work on it without much complaint. The chiclet style keyboard and trackpad work as they should, and many noted that the keyboard is comfortable to use, even though there is some flex, but it is not backlit, which could affect those late study sessions if you are a student. Inside you will find an entry-level AMD 1.5GHz E2-6110 quad-core processor that is helped along by 4GB of RAM. The laptop underperforms for the most part, but for document creation, video streaming and light web browsing it will get the job done. Unlike the Samsung Chromebook 3 XE500C13-K04US and the ASUS Chromebook C202SA-YS02 11.6-inch, it has 32GB of storage space, a whole 16GB more… which is still almost nothing to be completely fair, especially since Windows 10 S (a version of Windows 10 that is designed for low cost computers) takes up most of that space, forcing you to make use of online storage. You get a 1-year Office 365 subscription and there are enough ports for connecting peripherals, including a single USB 3.1 Type-C connection, which features the any-way up design. The speaker quality is said to be decent overall, and it’s 802.11n Wi-Fi connection is stable and fast enough for most.

Pros

  • Incredibly lightweight
  • Highly portable
  • Fast USB-C port
  • Excellent battery life

Cons

  • Underperforms
  • Flimsy feeling design
  • Lacks storage space

Specs

  • 14 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels
  • Windows 10 S
  • 6.5 hours battery life
  • 3.6 lbs

Summary

The ASUS L402WA-EH21 is a budget laptop that is good for light task handling and it has an excellent battery life, but it said to underperform due to its entry-level hardware.

HP 14-AX040WM 14-inch

HP 14-AX040WM 14-inch laptop
In the Internet age, sleek, small netbook-type laptops are becoming more and more commonplace. The HP 14-AX040WM 14-inch is another addition to this growing trend. Weighing in at only 5 pounds, it is lightweight and very portable. It comes with 4GB of RAM and an Intel Celeron N3060 Processor, both of which are entry level, offering acceptable performance for basic tasks though limiting your multitasking quite heavily. To squeeze the most out of your laptop you can also install an additional RAM module without spending too much. The 32GB of flash storage may seem disappointing, but the HP 14-AX040WM 14-inch is geared towards online use. You can easily use cloud storage if you find yourself out of space or you could just slip in an SD card and up the storage capacity. The 14-inch display has a resolution of 1366×768, and the keyboard is a full size island-style keyboard. The battery life is said to be around 5 hours, which is average for these types of laptops, so you will need to remain near an outlet if you plan on using it for a full day at college.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Portable
  • Decent keyboard
  • Excellent price

Cons

  • 32GB of storage is very limiting
  • Only 4GB of RAM

The HP 14-AX040WM 14-inch is inexpensive and super portable, but the 32GB of storage may deter some buyers. However, for Internet use, cloud storage will save you from needing to add more storage space through an SD card.

Acer Aspire 1 A114-31-C4HH 14-inch

Acer Aspire 1 A114-31-C4HH laptop
It is rare finding laptops under $300 with Full-HD displays that are not refurbished. The Acer Aspire 1 A114-31-C4HH 14-inch laptop comes with a 1920 x 1080 display, and Acer have decided to include an SSD, too. While this may seem to be a dream come true to those on a budget, be aware that there are some drawbacks. The screen is Full-HD, but many have pointed out that it looks washed out and that the viewing angles are poor. Furthermore, the fast SSD is a great inclusion for boot times and application loading times, but at only 32GB, you won’t be able to load much on it. It comes with an Intel Celeron N3450 CPU and 4GB of RAM, and at least the system feels more responsive than other laptops in this price range that come with older mechanical hard drives as opposed to SSDs. The Acer Aspire 1 A114-31-C4HH is suitable for users looking for a Chromebook like Windows machine, as it does come with Windows 10. It is lightweight, weighing it at just 3.64 pounds, and comes with a chiclet-style keyboard and a trackpad that one user described as average at best. It has a decent port selection, coming with an HDMI port, an SD card reader, a USB 3.0 port, and two USB 2.0 ports, and then the usual headphone jack and power jack. Some pointed out that speakers are rather unimpressive, so do not expect much in terms of sound.

Pros

  • Fast SSD
  • All-day battery life
  • Decent performance for price
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • A mere 32GB of storage space
  • TN display
  • Poor speakers
  • Average trackpad

Specs

  • 14 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 9 hours battery life
  • 3.6 lbs

Summary

If you are looking for a Chromebook-type laptop with Windows, then the Acer Aspire 1 A114-31-C4HH is a decent pick, but be aware that you will only be getting a mere 32GB of Storage.

HP Stream 14-ax010nr 14-inch

HP Stream 14-ax010nr 14-inch
HP has been releasing its Stream series for a number of years and the HP Stream 14-ax010nr is one of their latest offerings. Its compact size and light weight make it a great laptop as an everyday carrier, but the tiny hard drive will mean that you will need a connection to the internet or an external hard drive. The fast 32GB solid state drive allows Windows 10 to boot up in seconds and will allow you to launch your apps much faster than a traditional 5400rpm mechanical hard drive. But with just under 20GB free with Windows 10 installed, you are not left with much space to store your work or personal files. But you do get a year’s subscription to Office 365 and 1TB of OneDrive storage. However if want a good offline solution then we recommend a 1TB Seagate external hard drive. Powering the HP Stream 14-ax010nr is an Intel Celeron N3060 Dual Core processor and 4GB of RAM. While its entry level hardware is underpowered for the power user, it is sufficient for basic home and office use. The same goes with the display, like most budget laptops you get an entry level 1366 x 768 display panel. However the BrightView panel does offer brilliant image quality and a bright visual experience for indoor use.

Pros

  • Thin and light
  • 1TB of OneDrive storage
  • Two USB 3.1 Type-A ports
  • Good battery life
  • Price

Cons

  • Limited offline storage space
  • Underpowered for power users
  • No optical drive

Specs

  • Intel HD Graphics 400 (Braswell) Shared [View Framerates]

  • 3.17 lbs

HP Stream 14-ax030nr 14-inch

HP Stream 14-ax030nr 14-inch laptop
HP’s Stream 14-ax030nr comes in a small, portable design that is light enough to be carried anywhere with you. Its battery life of around 10 hours means you will not need to carry around your power adaptor, making it ideal for college students. It comes with an Intel Celeron N3060 processor, and 4GB of RAM, meaning it is more suited to basic use such as word processing, video streaming and photo viewing. The 64GB eMMC flash storage does mean that it has fast boot up and application load times, and it does make the system feel more snappy, but 64GB is very small, and system files will take up most of the space. Users have pointed out that the keyboard is average, as well as the touchpad, with one reviewer noting that it is too sensitive. The 14-inch LED screen is 1366×768 is said to be quite dim, with many rating it as average at best. All-in-all, the HP Stream 14-ax030nr is eye-catching and very portable, but storage space is a problem, and it is suited mostly for basic use.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Appealing design
  • SSD
  • Solid battery life

Cons

  • 64GB of Storage is limiting
  • Average keyboard and touchpad
  • Dim screen

Acer Chromebook CB3-131-C3SZ 11.6-inch

Acer Chromebook CB3-131-C3SZ
Acer has started to make a name for itself in the Chromebook market as of late. With multiple additions to their chromebook lineup the CB3-131-C3SZ is one of the most popular. Don’t let the 2.16Ghz Celeron processor and 2GB DDR3L RAM fool you, the CB3-131-C3SZ is lightning fast thanks to Google’s lightweight Chrome OS. Boot up times are around 7 seconds thanks to the 16GB SSD drive and with around 8 and a half hours of battery life this couldn’t be more suited for a on-the-go professional or student. There are a few limitations due to Chrome OS such as only being able to install apps off the Chrome web store as well as a lack of a file browser, however the tech savvy user will easily be able to install Linux to turn this Chromebook into a fully fledged laptop computer.

Pros

  • Compact
  • Aluminum Cover
  • Long Battery Life
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Chrome OS Limitations
  • No optical drive

Specs

  • Intel HD Graphics (Bay Trail) Shared [View Framerates]

HP Chromebook 11 G5 X9U02UT#ABA

If you are looking for a portable laptop that offers simplicity and extreme portability, then the budget HP Chromebook 11 G5 X9U02UT#ABA shouldn’t be overlooked. Much like HP’s popular 14-AX040WM 14-inch, it comes with modest specs, including an Intel Celeron N3060 processor and a mere 4GB of RAM, making the laptop less productivity oriented and more suitable for day-to-day task handling, such as basic web browsing, video streaming and basic word processing. We’d definitely recommend using G Suite, which is Google’s online version of MS Office and it comes with Google Drive, as the HP Chromebook 11 G5 X9U02UT#ABA comes with only 32GB of storage, which fills up pretty quickly. The anti-glare LED display’s resolution is 1366 x 768, and while there’s only 32GB of storage, the eMMC is fast, meaning your boot up and app loading times will be quick. Google Apps is supported, which was a bonus for many users, meaning you can run your favorite apps on the laptop, and the 12.5 hour charge is great for college students and users who are on the go. Furthermore, you won’t have to carry around a power cable with you, freeing up additional space in your backpack. It comes with 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1 Ports, an HDMI port and a microSD slot, so you fortunately not short of connectivity. Some general complaints we directed towards HP’s customer care, with some customers finding the experience to be immensely frustrating. The speaker volume is said to be quite low, but the speaker quality of laptops is generally quite annoying and tinny sounding (which can always be fixed by a pair of headphones or in expensive plug-and-play speakers).

Pros

  • Ease of use
  • Light, portable form factor
  • Budget friendly
  • Great battery life

Cons

  • May feel sluggish at times
  • Tiny storage space
  • Poor HP customer service

Specs

  • Intel HD Graphics 400 (Braswell) shared [View Framerates]
  • 4GB LPDDR3 RAM
  • 16GB SSD
  • 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (IPS)
  • Chrome OS
  • 12.75 hours battery life
  • 2.5 lbs

Summary

The HP Chromebook 11 G5 X9U02UT#ABA is budget friendly and offers a simple overall user experience, but it’s entry level hardware may lead to a somewhat tired feeling laptop, especially under load.

Laptops Under $200 – Honorable Mentions

Lenovo Ideapad 210s 11.6-inch

Lenovo Ideapad 210s 11.6 inch laptop
The Lenovo Ideapad 210s and the HP Stream 14-ax010nr 14-inch are the only Windows laptops in our under $200 guide that feature 11.6-inch displays; a size that is mostly associated with the Chromebooks that dominate this guide. The Ideapad 210s is a handy, small and quiet subnotebook that has a neat mineral gray finish, and it can be easily tucked away in your bag and go almost completely unnoticed thanks to its 2.54 pound weight. The Intel Celeron N3350 Dual-Core processor, Intel HD graphics 500 integrated GPU, and 2GB of RAM aren’t really going to win any awards for performance, but you will be able to do the basics, such as word processing, video streaming, picture viewing and basic web browsing, and it comes with all your office essentials thanks to the 1-year Microsoft Office 365 subscription. The 32GB of storage space will fill up in no time if you do not plan on making use of cloud based storage options such as Google Drive, and on top of this Windows will take up quite a bit of the limited space from the beginning. It has a range of connectivity options, including a modern USB Type-C port (a rarity in laptops at this price), two USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI slot and a useful SD card reader. The LED display has a resolution of 1366 x 768, which is fairly standard in this price range, with the Acer Aspire 1 A114-31-C4HH being one of the few exceptions that comes with a Full-HD IPS display. The Lenovo Ideapad is great for casual, everyday use, and its whisper quiet operations and neat design makes this a great investment for those looking for a budget laptop.

Pros

  • Very affordable
  • Handy, compact size
  • Great look
  • Free 1-year Microsoft Office 365 subscription
  • Fast USB Type-C port

Cons

HP Chromebook 11G4 EE 11.6-inch

HP ChromeBook 11 G4 EE laptop
The HP Chromebook 11G4 EE 11.6-inch laptop comes at an appealing price, and is a good at getting the basics right, such as basic word processing, general browsing and video streaming. The dual core Intel Celeron N2840 Processor will lag if you intend on doing more demanding tasks, but at least the 4GB of RAM allows for some reasonable multitasking. The 16GB eMMC SSD drive is fast, so application and boot times will be fast, but 16GB is a rather small amount of storage, even for Chrome OS.. The build quality is solid and it is well suited to school kids or college students constantly on the move thanks to its sturdy construction. It has a chiclet style keyboard that is said to be decent in terms of comfort and the 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 screen is anti-glare, but the image quality is average, with some noting that it can become washed out and that the viewing angles are rather narrow. The battery life is said to be 11 hours by the manufacturer, but others have noted that it could be closer to 7 hours if you are using the Chromebook 11G4 EE quite intensively. So you will need to lug around your AC adapter if you plan on doing a full day’s work. Weighing in at 2.50 pounds pounds, the Chromebook 11G4 EE is light enough to easily slip into backpacks and carry around with you.

Pros

  • Reasonable performance
  • Okay multitasking
  • Decent keyboard quality
  • Portable
  • Solid construction

  • Demanding applications struggle

HP Stream 11-y010nr 11.6-inch

HP Stream 11-y010nr 11.6-inch
The Stream range of laptops have been extremely popular with users who are after a reliable laptop that won’t break the bank. Designed for the everyday user, the HP Stream 11-y010nr will easily cope with tasks such as web browsing, emails and Skype, but its entry level processor will struggle with more intensive tasks. Designed for streaming and working online, the HP Stream 11-y010nr only features a tiny 32GB of storage space. However with Windows 10 installed you are only left with around 20GB of usable storage space. While the SSD will allow you to start up Windows in seconds, it is far too small to store any larger media collections or large amounts of photos. Luckily HP have fitted the HP Stream 11-y010nr with a microSD card slot and you can use a large 128GB microSD card to increase the internal storage of the laptop. Don’t forget to format the card to NTFS to allow Windows to copy larger files. You can also look at an external hard drive or a cloud based storage option if you would prefer even more space. An Intel Celeron N3060 processor and 4GB of RAM power the HP Stream 11-y010nr, but neither the RAM nor the storage drive can be removed or upgraded, so you will have to make do with the 4GB of RAM. You get an 11.6-inch display that offers impressive colors and image quality for its attractive price. However, to keep costs down, HP have used an entry level TN display that offers far narrower viewing angles than laptops with an IPS displays. You also get a fairly large bezel around the display which is noticeable and makes the overall display area look a lot smaller than it really is. Overall if you are looking for a cheap entry level laptop for basic tasks, then the HP Stream 11-y010nr is well worth considering. Alternatively you can also look at the slightly larger HP Stream 14-ax010nr if you would prefer a 14-inch laptop.

Pros

  • Light and compact
  • Great battery life
  • Good display
  • Fast boot speeds
  • Attractive price
  • 12 month of Office 365

Cons

  • Tiny amount of storage space
  • No optical drive
  • Limited ports
  • Slightly underpowered hardware

Specs

  • Intel HD Graphics 400 (Braswell) Shared [View Framerates]
  • 4GB DDR3L RAM

  • 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 10.75 hours battery life
  • 2.57 lbs

Summary

The HP Stream 11-y010nr offers great value for money, but the underpowered hardware is more suited to basic tasks and the internal storage space is fairly small for a modern laptop.

The Chromebook 3 has seen little cosmetic change and the external ports remain the same, but the internal hardware has been upgraded with an Intel Celeron N3050 processor that has a lower clock speed, but its smaller size, larger l2 cache and lower voltage offers more power with less heat and better battery performance. The RAM has been doubled and now sports 4GB of RAM for Chrome apps that require more memory. The 16GB of eMMC flash memory offers lighting fast data transfer speeds, but on the down side the 16GB of storage will fill up quickly. But Chromebooks are designed to operate in conjunction with Google’s online services and a Micro SD slot allows user to expand their storage space. The 11.6-inch display remains the same and offers good viewing angles, good colors and the same maximum resolution of 1366×768 as its predecessor. The pros of Chome OS is that it requires less powerful hardware to run apps compared to Windows 10 laptops in the same price bracket. Thanks to the low voltage hardware and the Chromebook 3 offers great battery life and can run for up to 11 hours off of a single charge, making it perfect for users on the go.

Acer has started to make a name for itself in the Chromebook market as of late. With multiple additions to their chromebook lineup the CB3-111-C670 is one of the most popular. Best Refurbished Laptops Under $200

Acer Chromebook CB3-532-C47C 15.6-inch

Acer Chromebook CB3-532-C47C 15.6 laptop
The Acer Chromebook CB3-532-C47C 15.6-inch refurbished laptop has a 15-hour battery that will last any college student or casual user an entire day. While it is by no means a machine geared towards maximum productivity, it is decent for everyday use. Its Dual-Core 1.60 GHz Celeron N3060 Processor and 2GB of RAM is slightly underwhelming and you will have noticeable lag when attempting to run hardware hogging apps, but video streaming from YouTube and Netflix, basic web browsing and word processing work great. The matte 15.6-inch screen has a resolution of 1366 x 768, which left FHD fans unimpressed, and some did find that the viewing angles were not the best. While many may think that the 16GB of flash storage is slim, be aware that Chromebooks run Chrome OS, and they make use of Cloud storage and mostly web based applications, so it is not much of a drawback. It comes equipped with dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2, both of which are speedy. It is larger than most chromebooks with its dimensions of 0.95 by 15.08 by 10.08 inches, and it weighs in at 4.3 pounds, but it is still portable and lightweight enough to slip into one’s backpack. The chiclet style keyboard is supposedly okay to type, although some noted that its key travel is a bit short.

Pros

  • Excellent battery life
  • Large display
  • Great customer service from Acer
  • Good at the basics
  • Value

Cons

  • 2GB of RAM
  • 720p screen
  • Struggles with resource hogging tasks

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels
  • Chrome OS
  • 12 hours battery life
  • 4.3 lbs

Summary

Acer’s Chromebook CB3-532-C47C 15.6-inch is gets the basics right, and is well suited to college students, but its screen resolution of 720p may be a deal breaker for some.

ASUS VivoBook E203NA-YS03 11.6-inch

ASUS VivoBook E203NA-YS03 11.6-inch
ASUS’s Vivobook E203NA-YS03 has been a popular choice for Amazon customers due to its attractive price and convenient design. Its plastic casing feels cheap and flimsy, but the laptop has been designed with portability and convenience in mind, and it offers a battery life that outlasts the day, with many finding it runs out of juice after about 10 hours. Its chiclet keyboard has left a good impression overall, even though it has the slight amount of flex, and its easy-to-use, multi-touch trackpad has plenty of room for gesture control. It has an 11.6-inch, TN display that’s slightly dim and better for indoor use, and it has a high definition resolution of 1366 x 768. The Acer Aspire 1 A114-31-C4HH 14-inch is one of the few laptops we have seen under $200 that features a Full-HD display, but it also features a TN display that is of a lower quality. The small netbook offers decent connectivity, with an up-to-date USB Type-C port, two USB 3.0 ports, a microSD card reader, and an HDMI output. Under the hood you will find an Intel Celeron N3350 CPU, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of flash memory. Needless to say it isn’t built to perform heavy-duty tasks, but it is perfect for lighter tasks, such as light web surfing, document viewing or editing, or streaming. Even then, users found that it lags at times, but they did expect this, especially since it is an inexpensive laptop that isn’t built for speed. It is said to have a good battery life overall, with one customer finding it lasts around 10 hours under normal use, and it has Windows S installed. If you are a student on a budget, or you’re simply looking for an inexpensive laptop for light work or media consumption, then this little notebook is perfect for your needs.

Pros

  • Appealing design
  • Lightweight for maximum portability
  • Super fast USB Type-C port
  • Good battery life

Cons

  • Good battery life
  • Keyboard flex
  • Plastic case makes it feel cheap
  • Mediocre display

Specs

  • 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels
  • Windows 10 S
  • 6.75 hours battery life
  • 2.2 lbs

Summary

What the ASUS VivoBooK E203NA-YS03 lacks in performance, it makes up for in its solid battery life, portable design, and a generally cute look.

Wrap up

As you can see, with a little digging you can easily find laptops available for under $200 if you are shopping on an extremely tight budget. However, for best performance, we recommend that you spend just a little more to truly get the best bang for your buck.  To help you, consider visiting our other guides including our weekly list of laptops under $300 and under $400 articles to find some of the best budget laptops available.

Note: The main drawback of buying a $200 laptop is that to get the best performance out of your machine you will need to run either an older operating system (usually Windows XP) or Chrome OS, Google’s custom operating system that is based on the cloud and is fully browser orientated (no standard Windows apps). We’d strongly recommending checking out our guide to laptops under $300 if you can afford it for a lot more solid options or more of our cheap laptop guides to fit every budget.
