EA Working on Open World Star Wars Game

It seems EA may finally be working on an open world Star Wars game, if some of the company’s job postings are any indication. According to the job listing, EA is looking for someone to create “online features for a Star Wars open world project.”

Many believe that this is simply a continuation of the project originally begun by Visceral Games before it’s closing. While this game will be very different from the original project, there is little doubt that it is building upon the foundation that was already created before EA closed the studio for good.

As part of the closing, EA announced that it would be altering the original, linear game into something with a much broader scope.

“Our Visceral studio has been developing an action-adventure title set in the Star Wars universe,” Soderlund writes. “In its current form, it was shaping up to be a story-based, linear adventure game. Throughout the development process, we have been testing the game concept with players, listening to the feedback about what and how they want to play, and closely tracking fundamental shifts in the marketplace. It has become clear that to deliver an experience that players will want to come back to and enjoy for a long time to come, we needed to pivot the design.

“We will maintain the stunning visuals, authenticity in the Star Wars universe, and focus on bringing a Star Wars story to life. Importantly, we are shifting the game to be a broader experience that allows for more variety and player agency, leaning into the capabilities of our Frostbite engine and reimagining central elements of the game to give players a Star Wars adventure of greater depth and breadth to explore.”

An open world Star Wars game would fit the bill, exactly. Only we have no idea how open the world would be and what exactly the scope of the game will be, yet, or whether you will need a VR ready or high-end gaming laptop just to run it. Moreover, other than this job posting, there has been no official world on what kind of online features will be present in the game.

Still, an open world Star Wars game is long overdo. If you remember, the last open world type of game for Star Wars would be Star Wars Galaxies, the sandbox MMORPG that caused quite a stir many years ago with its constant changes without consulting its playerbase. While not a true open world game, no other game has made players feel like they were part of the universe quite like SWG.

Given the history of EA and of SWG with Lucasarts, there is no doubt that everyone is very skeptical about this project, although many of us are hoping a true open world Star Wars game will come to gaming systems everywhere very soon. Currently, there is no word on when the game will be released or when we will even learn anything about the game. For now, we must be patient. Let’s just hope EA doesn’t continue down the path of the dark side with this next Star Wars game.
